  • Eg eri føroysk og eg eri stolt av tí!!!!!!!!!!! Og vit hava "Ð"

  • My family originates from Norway...I live in the United Staes so yeah...I want to know my homelands' language. Any REAL easy ways without moving to the country?

  • i sound like a douche with my pronunciation of this and i'm usually really good! awesome language!

As a viking re-enactor, I really want to be some-what fluent, or at least have a few learned phrases

  • I can't watch the video atm due to slow internet, but good to see the Faroese language being propagated ;)

  • @tasteegold777 Dude, not every Faroese speaker is into whaling. That's like implying that all English speakers like invading other countries and killing middle-easterners because our armies are in the middle-east fighting some war over a debatable point. For someone apparently so pro-intelligent-animal-rights (whales), you seem rather hypocritical using "monkey" as an insult! So play nice, since the language is unrelated to any moral issues that you seem to be applying to all Faroese people.

  • @chrissomerry Yeah not everyone is into whaling, Im faroese and i whale, But you will never stop it because it is faroese way of life and our culture.

  • You have the same -r- as some of our northern dialects in Norway.

    Very funny language!

What´s the name of the song, by the way?

  • Comment removed

  • @lyselampe Faroese have like an american R maybe a bit like the northern norwegians.

In western norway they have completly diffrent R's.

  • @lyselampe Fjøllini standa úti. check my account if you wanna listen to a full upload of the song, with lyrics too.

  • your're wrong about the icelandic.. Icelandic is the old norse.

  • you mumble a lot

  • @tasteegold777 I'd... really rather not. Thank you for that lovely mental scenery though.

  • @littleaprilroses so... you're not going to visit the islands, because some hypocrite complained..? -_-

  • @JonnaJacobsen1995 Actually I'm not going to go to the islands because I'm 16 with no real intreast or form of transportation of going there. And FYI, I never once instituted the idea that I was going to the islands, so what the hell are you even talking about? lol.

  • @littleaprilroses there are several people, who say that they won't go to the islands because of the whaling, so that is why I am asking...

  • @tasteegold777 LOL! You're a pretty big asshole for saying this but I have to admit that I did infact laugh my ass off pretty hard when I read this. :P

  • @tasteegold777 you say: eg eri ein kraft býttlingur, og eg havi ongantíð haft naka ástarband við nakran, tí eg eri brekaður. :)

  • is Icelandic mutual intelligible Faroese?

  • @ErasmusPrime239 no. I'm faroese i'd might understand the very simple things in Icelandic but not able to follow a conversation. It's however a bit easier to read icelandic texts.

  • @ErasmusPrime239 pretty much yeah, if you just slow down and listen

  • @ErasmusPrime239 pretty much yeah, if you just slow down and listen

  • i am norwegian, and when i read, it makes absolutely no sense, but when you read it out loud i suddenly understand quite a bit.

  • Faroese is a scandinavian language -.-

    The language is like this

    Indo European>Germanic>North Germanic>West Scandinavian>Faroese

just cus FO isnt a Scandinavian country doesnt mean that the language isnt Scandinavian.

  • fuck hattar er ein genialur máti at læra føroyskt uppá!

  • What's the name of the song in the beginning? :)

  • Linguistically speaking, Faroese is an:

    Indo-European/Germanic/North Germanic/West Scandinavian language.

So yeah... it IS Scandinavian just like Danish, Norwegian, Icelandic and Swedish.

  • Thanks for posting this. It's very interesting and intriguing language but could you do a video of the Faroese alphabet, it will be easier to understand the pronunciation for beginners as I am.

  • Faroese is, well, not a Scandinavian language.

  • @Phr0zenFire Not Scandinavian but nordic! Icelandic, Faroese, Norwegian, Swedish and Danish are nordic languages. Icelandic and Faroese is not scandinavian thow.

Icelandic, western norwegian and swedish are all languages that have many common things with faroese.

  • haha this sounds like the landsfolk that live in west norway

  • lol i dont think that if i go to Faroe island that i will have to learn the language i under stand most of it and im from iceland, mér líkar færeygjar.

    Bei, hav tað gott! :)

  • Vill eitthver færeyskur tala við mig á færeysku og ég tala íslensku á móti og gá hvort við skiljum hvorn annan bara með því að tala þannig

  • Thanks a lot for the lesson!

  • To my knowledge Icelandic evolved the least

  • I just lol'd xD

  • This is very interesting. Faroese seems to jump over some consonants.

  • isn't it so that you faroese ppl speak a ''cleaner'' (compared to norwegian( no offence danes)) danish too? so that if i go to the faroe islands, i'll be able to speak with you? (i'm norwegian)

  • @siggdigg

    No... Not really :/

  • @torkamarinum oh... ok

  • @siggdigg yes, we do. You know have you Norwegians have no problem with reading danish but big problem with understanding spoken Danish, well, when we talk to Sweds and icelanders and norwegians we speak a different Danish, known as Gøtudanskt, it's basically danish as it is written. so that's why it is so easy for you to understand it.

  • If I just knew how to pronounce half the words, I could learn this a lot easier. haha

  • i speak norwegian so i've understood a lot of it, but what a cute language you speak! it's sounds sooo sexy as well hahah loved it!

  • I love Faroese, I'd love to learn it, but there aren't many resources available. Maybe I'll just have to go there :P

Takk!

  • Lol! I'm norwegian and understands almost everything!!! :D

  • Just a correction, the Vikings settled in 800 AD, not BC.

In 800 BC, Norse culture was still maybe 1400 years from developing. At that time, the people living in Scandinavia spoke Proto-Germanic, which is the parent language to all Germanic languages like Old Norse, English, German, Gothic etc.

    Otherwise, Good info here. :)

  • no not like ei more like a u.

    its hard too explane.

  • Like ü? Or like normal German u? Or something different?

  • The epic one handed god of single combat...

Which is one hand extra if he wants to pummel the brown matter out of his opponents.

  • Eivør Pálsdóttir, Frændur, Kári P, Eyðun og Terji, Uni Arge, Føstufressar

  • eg kommer i fra Norge, skal snart til Færøyene! I come from Norway, im soon visiting Faroes. We are going to Fugloy, is it hotels, motels or sleephouses there? It sounds just like Norwegian :-)

  • Faroese is very pretty! :) I see many similarities to Swedish (the only Scandinavian language that I know) but I am sure it is more obvious relation to Norwegian.

  • its actually most alike icelandic than any other languages

  • Yeah, I know, but it is a bit similar. That's all I was saying.

  • Eg er frálíkt til faroes?

    i fail.

  • nice try :)

"eg dugi frálíka væl at tosa føroyskt" would be one way of saying it.

  • swedes and farose ppl spelling are very different but we pronunce some words pretty simuler. nice video

  • Faroese is much closer to Swedish than to regular Norwegian, but when you venture into west-norsk, then Norwegian becomes much closer.

scroll the comment page 2 months down to see some recommended music.

  • Ég hlóg, Færeyska hljómar skringilega

  • Thanks to the band Týr I love this language :) but, man I laughed a little at 1:54 , I can't get how you say it that fast

  • 'tú' is pronounced exactly the same in Irish Gaelic, and has the same meaning. Actually, quite a lot of the Faroese words sound similar to Irish.

  • icelandic, faroese, english:

Hvað heitir þú? hvussu eitur tú? whats your name?

Ég heiti Jógvan. Eg eiti Jogvan. My name is Jogvan

Hvar býrð þú? Hvar býrt tú? Where do you live?

Hvernig gengur? Hvussu gongur? How's it going?

    Kannski. Kanska. Maybe

  • Nice intro to the language, thanks. Though it would help if it was a little slower, and with more repetition, especially with the longer phrases. Farvæl I can cope with :-)

  • Thank you!

I am a quarter Faroese and now I have a start to speaking a little Føroyska!

  • heh me too!

  • mogga? xD

  • I heared a little bit of malmø, icelandic and norwegian vestlands dialekt in there. Not bad for a dutch-norwegian fucker with a språkøre. he?

  • OMG this is great! thank you!!!

  • Great song indeed. I would like to know it as well.

  • I want this song but cant find it anywhere :(

  • Man, the only phrases that looked similar to english were "come in" and "farewell". This is a cool language!

  • @thatlazyslacker :

You must be kidding me! Maybe Faroese language is a bit difficult, but I've already found at least 10 phrases or words that are similar to English!

    Examples:

    Ja-Yes Nei-No Hallo/Hey-Hello/Hi Vælkomin-Welcome Góðan morgun-Good moring Góðan dagin-Good afternoon

    Góða nátt-Good night Føroyskt-Faroese Enskt-English

    Greetings from Serbia!!!

  • hehe, for a dutch person like me it's surprisingly easy to say/speak it (I actually did:P) Danish is much more difficult

  • Thank you, it was very interesting.

I'm both Swedish and German, so some expressions look familiar, but it sounds mostly strange, but nice.

  • I'd love to learn Faroese; it's so beautiful. But I only have a tiny little Kauderwelsch booklet :(

Does anyone know of any other learning materials in English or German?

  • I have the Kauderwelsch booklet too ^^

can you tell me, if you've find other materials?

    I'm longing for ~

  • I'm learning Icelandic, and i think that Faroese is really similar to Icelandic. Both are wonderful languages.

  • Everyone who thinks Sweden should Remake their Ö and Ä to Æ Ø say yes to my comment. personally i would love to get those letters back so all the fornnordic countries has the same letters..... And that sweden dosent get accidentally switch for being Germany :D

  • OOOMMMMGG tú hevur spennandi lív.

  • i think its really close to danish but maybe it's because my familys from there.. i was just born in dk :D haha

  • Really??

I'm danish and I think faroese is hard :P it's kinda easy to read but when it's talked... I don't understand a word ;)

  • they pronounce their letters much differently g almost sounds like k.

  • hey, hwhat's the name of this song??

  • Fjøllini Standa úti by ORKA (or ORCA ? xD )

  • It's stated both in the end of the video and in the comment before you. Open up your eyes retard!^^

  • Danish, Icelandic and faroese are not tonal language.

Proto-norse was a tonal language but Danish have switched to stød instead.

I think only Swedish and Norwegian are tonal language in europe

Uansett så har jeg ingen problemer å forstå færøysk hverken muntlig eller skriftlig. Flere steder her på vestlandet har dialekter som er ganske lik.

  • it's a stretch even to call Norwegian or Swedish tonal, we have a pitch accent like Japanese, not like the tones of something like Chinese

  • Is Faroese a tonal language?

  • Oh gosh! It´s so difficult! But it´s sounds beautiful!

  • really cool, though i dont think this will make me any better at it

  • great video(i am brazilian)

  • Hehe im faroes in brasil =P

Faroes is mutch harder to learn then portoguese

  • Detta va ein kjekke video. Lag flære! Eg vi læra meg mær færøysk.

  • hattar var bara skeg lol men skal ik brúka tad tí eg búgvi í føroyum :P

  • Actually.. Viking settlers aiming for Iceland and the Faroes were most in 8-9th century AD, rather than BC.. =)

Lol, to me this sounds like badly spelled Icelandic with strong Norwegian accent =P

    Greetings from Iceland :D

  • many cool,

    but complicated (I am brazilian)

  • thank you im now fluent

  • Hvussu eitur hasin sangurin??

  • Fjøllini standa úti

  • Føroyskur humor í verðinsklassa!

  • færøsk humor er verdensklasse

reminds a bit of danish too ;)
