This video is strikingly similar to '"Teen Angst" by Cracker. Almost same scenario, almost same bike, almost same dogs. But this one is from 1996, the video by Cracker is from 1992. Very strange coincidence anyway.
@sorbole750 they were friends, and even wrote "Sick of Goodbyes" together (both Sparklehorse and Cracker have great versions of the song). I'd be surprised if it was totally coincidental.
I did sound for him several times at Maxwell's in Hoboken, and The Fez in NYC. I feel privileged to have met him, and honored to have shared in his musical experience in some small way.
Went to see Thomas White who played this tune and blew me away. i didn't realize he had passed away. The album is pure brilliance, so his memory lives on.
@SiThePi That's right; I did read that he shot himself in the heart (!!). However, IF he had shot himself in the head, "mind-blowing" would have been a poor choice of words.
"Poignant even in death"...I don't think I could have put it any better.
@jimbrown257 I'd also read a couple of articles saying (erroneously) he'd shot himself in the head, but I felt that he was trying to say something with his final act. He is sorely missed, Jim.
I remembered his obituary was in the March issue of Rolling Stone. I just checked it and it indeed said his shot himself in the heart. RS is a pretty reliable source when it comes to things like this. If they had made a mistake, I would have thought they'd have ran a correction last month. I am sure that the sources that said he shot himself in the head just assumed that's how he would have done it.
@jimbrown257 That was my assumption too upon reading those articles. Shoddy journalism maybe? As a songwriter myself, I understand how annoying it can be when a word or a line is misinterpreted or ignored. I only met Mark once, but I'm pretty sure that by choosing to shoot himself in the heart he would feel the message was loud and clear.
That's awesome you met Linkous. I was about 17 when they were at their most popular, which was never much considering how popular they should have been. It's really too bad people don't remember this music these days. I was really disappointed to see that Rolling Stone only had a small mention of it. I was almost as disappointed as the week Joe Strummer died and Justin Timberlake was on the cover.
@jimbrown257 I met him in Glasgow after a Sparklehorse gig. A nicer and more humble man you could hardly imagine. I remember him smiling when I told him I thought he was the Bob Dylan of our generation. We had a chat about songwriting and other musicians we liked. Turned out that Mark loved the Beta Band and their songwriter at the time, Gordon Anderson. He couldn't believe it when I told him that I know Gordon. Never talked about himself. I left thinking "does this man know his own genius?".
I used to tape 120 almost every Sunday thinking that someday they would become hard to find but thanks to the internet now we can access all these awesome videos with good quality.
i just heard this watching Laurel canyon. Sounds a little like Doughboys to me. LOVE the bass sounds so melodic.

This would be brilliant if he didn't steal the line "everything that's made is made to decay" from Daniel Johnston. Wait, no it's still brilliant.

"Mindblowing"...was that a intentional pun? You do know how he died, right?

@jimbrown257 ... Shelby Meade (Mark's manager) released a statement saying Mark had shot himself in the heart. Poignant even in death.
