  • Class. Pure, simple class. Possibly one of the best ever F1 overtakes.

  • You have to bare in mind this corner is a 4.5G+ corner. Insane!

  • Genius. Pure genius.

  • Mansell was the bravest of them all. His balls were hand carved from blocks of granite.

  • Both Mansell and Berger were great drivers. In my opinion, Berger also deserved a championship, like Nigel. I wish Ferrari had treated Mansell in a better way, he was definately a better driver than Prost and he could have done many great things if he stayed with Scuderia. Although his decision to leave the team proved successful.

  • i want to see murray walker commetating on f1 again

  • "la peraltada", one of the best f1 corners

  • OMG MANSELL HAS BALLS SIZE LIKE BASKETBALLS!

  • This was just 1 highlight of an absolutely brilliant race. Mansell had just spun on knackered tyres and Berger drove past him. Mansell was so furious with himself he charged up behind Berger and roared past him! What a racer.

  • IL Leone

  • Mansell, Berger, BBC, Murray Walker, James Hunt. EPIC DAYS!!!!!!!

  • u dont see outside pass with n F1 anymore

  • No.1, aka Red 5 .

  • "An- an- and Mansell going round the outside!" What a legend Murray is

  • great overtake by Mansell but a little bit hard to see as an austrian. ;) *g*. Mansell was one of the best drivers in F1 Histroy i think.

  • WOW!

  • Why can't we see passes like that today? Are the rubber marbles THAT bad?

  • @arena2101 What about when Vettle overtook Alonso round the outside with two wheels on the grass.

  • @arena2101 As crazy as it may sound, "marbles rubber" would help in seeing again passes like that. What is really killing todays F1 is not rubber but aerodynamics. In nowaday cars Nigel wouldn't ever get the tail of Gerhard in that turn, because today slipstreaming into fast turns gives the pursuer more troubles than advantages, the opposite back then. Blame front-end aerodynamics improvements, that allow cars to be fine when alone and quite bad when having another car right ahead.

  • @mellilore it happend to mansell in suzuka , got in the dirty air of senna on turn one ...... after this . 1991 i believe .

  • mansell always gave spectacular battles, with everybody. His battle with Senna and his alternavile lines in monaco 1992 are unforgetable.

  • I'll never forget, say goodbye (says mansel to berger) good old times, man!

All without using executive things like Kers and DRS and...all the stuff yn :3

  • I will never forget that moment

  • Wow. Nigel flattened him, made it look like nothing difficult.

  • Wow! simply amazing maneuver...I drove in Hnos Rodriguez last sunday and that "peraltada" is really scary!!

  • Mansell is the author of some incredibly awesome passes, but here it seems Berger's car was really crappy.

Best Mansell pass evah: On Prost, for 2nd place, in 1991 at Monaco. (Yeah, MONACO!)

  • @JCCyC was that the pass in the tunnell..? (!)

  • @yerty2000 Yep, that one: ?v=qoG4cLaXFlk (at 6:49 there)

  • @JCCyC holy shit... that was obscene. The most daring F1 driver who ever lived..

  • @yerty2000 Well, in my opinion, Keke Rosberg and Gilles Villeneuve beat him (not by much) in the batshit crazy department. Your mileage may vary, of course.

  • @JCCyC You forgot Nuvolari, although he wasn't technically an F1 driver. xD

  • @JCCyC Right! That pass in Monaco in the chicane after the tunnel was incredible!

  • @JCCyC I think,if I remember right, that berger passed Mansell just minutes before qouite hard,so may damaged his own car..

  • Nigel was practicing for his future stint in IndyCars!

  • his voice sounds like the voice of a 7 jars old girl

  • That McLaren sounds brutal.

Round the outside! Mansell was a proper racer!

  • In my opinion, perhaps is one of the most beatifuls overtakings in F-1 history.

  • du'' big moustache '' tout craché...

  • Later, at the press conference, when Mansell was asked about how he did this move, he simply answered that he had closed his eyes! :-)

  • @77xpto Not true, he was quoted as "I made up my mind that I was not going to lift and go in there flat, and it held trough*

  • Awww, I went to 1991 GP at that track... missed that one, although being there means being sitted at the Peraltada corner, and elsewhere meant not watching that pass.

  • a couple of laps before Berger made a great manoeuver and passed Mansell at the end of the straight. I was lucky to be there

  • I'm sure in 50 years we'll still watch scenes like this with awe, and the drivers from this generation will still be legends, while today's drivers and championships will be long forgotten...

  • @SeinSchatten Yeah, probably not.

This is amazing, don't get me wrong, but the current generation will sprout it's own legends.

  • @Y00p agreed, i think, within 5 years there will be a good vettel v hamilton rivalry. both young, both agressive, both fast.

  • You would NEVER catch Prost attempting a spectacular move like that, he was a political driver, no more...Mansell was a real racer.

  • mansel is GOD!

  • my all time favourite F1 clip

  • How on earth did he done that?

    It's just against physic!

Guess Nigel could also divide by zero, if only he would give a damn doing that...

  • The engine note of Mansells Ferrari when he pulls out of the corner is fantastic! :D

  • Yo digo xq ahora que pusieron muro en la "peraltada",no le ponen un peralte como lo hacian antes...y modifican un poco esa pista, esa ultima chicana esta un asco...

  • Now I see this I can remember it. Man, getting old happens so quickly.

  • In-sane..

  • Guessing Berger had a problem...

  • Ah, James Hunt..

  • Lindo elastico

  • I have very much respect to Mansell! He always made brilliant passes like this one!One of the greatest overtakes ever in my opinion is the one that Mansell did on Senna in 1989 Hungarian Grand Prix!Simply fantastic stuff!

  • perfectly awesome : )

  • That engine note almost makes you orgasm!

  • The only real racer currently in F1, in terms of going for a pass anywhere on the track is Lewis Hamilton, except people are so used to processional races that they complain that he's dangerous!

  • This move has to be one of the very best overtaking in history, true balls of titanium Mansell had. In a way, he had a little of Gilles Villeneuve in him.....

  • MANSELL YOU BEAST! Most drivers would not have attempted that pass.

  • At the press conference after race, when Mansell was asked to explain how he had passed Berger, he answered: "I just closed my eyes" :-)

  • This just reminds us what a racer Nigel Mansell was, Formula 1 misses this type of driver big time !!

  • Yes it does...

That whole era was just amazing.

  • it's sad Honda left the game..

  • Incredible!

    Murray Walker at his best!

  • that was fucking class. . . everything has moved forward since the 80's & 90's except F1 which as a spectacle has moved backwards!

  • @flipsidedogchop Oh yes i miss the days drivers needed balls of steel to drive on that edge with their 1500 hp beasts. With all the safety features these days its shit. Back in the day the car was an untamed beast, whoever had the bigger balls and pushed it farther won.

  • ZOMETAMAS74, I remember that race well. Berger said he had to back off because come what may he knew Mansell was going for it. Pure guts and a significant amount of skill, which many people forget. You don't get as far as he did with out having talent. He was the only driver that could not be intimidated by Senna. Lets not forget he went to the USA and won the Championship there, many on ovals, where he had never raced, and after a massive crash at Phoneix. World class driver, underated.

  • Button will never be in the same class as Mansell. These guys were in a different class. Senna, Mansell, Prost, Piquet, very talented and commited drivers. Senna was the overall package, but nobody had the pure guts of Mansell. If he has been more of a diplomat outside of the car, he would have won more than one championship. Having said that he was robbed in 1986, pure bad luck, and he would have been 1993 champion it it were not for politics. A truly great time for F1.

  • no words ;o)

  • I remember perfectly that day, one of teh greatest passes of all time.

  • Amazing Mansell this is the Tiger.

  • Mansell or Button? who is the better driver?

  • @davedavid86 Mansell as it stands right now, Button has a lot of racing left in him though.

  • Oh come on. Button is an average journeyman who won a single race in God knows how many GPs. Finally, Ross Brawn gave him a car that your grandmother could win in.

Mansell is one of the best "racers" in history. The word "racer" can't really be associated with too many of the modern day, overpaid pre-madonnas.

  • I wouldn't be so hard on Jenson. If you remember it took Mansell a good 72 starts before he won a race, although that is less than Jenson. Also he never had a very competitive car until this year (the 2007&2008 Hondas were awful) and still managed some great results in the mid-2000s considering.

However, I would still rate Nige higher than Jenson. This video speaks volumes itself, and like Senna, he managed wring the necks of uncompetitive cars and achieve great results.

  • @tonypap1 Oh come on. I agree with you. Mansell is an elite. But Button is still doing well without Brawn!

  • @tonypap1

Then why wasn't Barrichello champion in 2009?

I think Button did really well in the 2004 BAR, against a totally superior Ferrari.

Ironically enough Mansell also won his only title in one of the most dominant F1 cars ever made, the Williams FW14B.

Don't get me wrong here. I quite like Mansell, but the fact remains he screwed up an easy 1987 title with his erratic driving. As much as I dislike Piquet he still drove clever and won the 1987 title with half the wins.

  • @McLarenMercedes erratic driving? Brazil - Puncture, Monte Carlo - Exhaust, Germany - Engine, Hungary - Wheel, Portugal - Electrical.......all races he probably would have won!

Mansell was entertaining, Button is not!

  • @flipsidedogchop

the same could be said about Raikkonen in his McLaren days. he sure was a heck of a lot more "entertaining" to watch than Alonso.

Monaco and Dallas 1984 were both there for Mansell to win. Btw, I have the outmost respect for Mansell, and I also like how easily he outdrove Piquet in their Williams days. I also believe Mansell deserved the 1986 title, and the 1987 one too.

  • @McLarenMercedes i totally agree with your statement about Mansell deserving the 86 title he was the best and quickest driver that year, however in 87 the title was deserverdly piquets, mansell may have had more race wins but piquet only finished off the podium 5 times in sixteen races and bearing in mind this was in the days of the only the best 11 finishes counting for the championship so all piquets scoring races were podiums he was far the more the consistant in 87

  • @SuperMikedyer

Sorry but just HOW was it deservedly Piquet's??

Look at his three wins............ Germany, he was in a lowly third place and won ONLY because Prost and Mansell broke down in front of him. Hungary.. he won because of a loose wheel nut on Mansell's car after being well beaten...again. Italy, Senna had him well beat in an inferior Lotus Honda but drove off the circuit at the Parabolica.

IMO...the luckiest world title in the history of the sport.

  • @tonypap1 bit like schumacher

  • @tonypap1

Then why didn't Barrichello win with that car??

Last time I check the Red Bull proved to be the best car mid-season, and in the late 2009 season, judged by Webber's wins (after 130 starts no winning once), I'd say Adrian Newey's engineering genius once again proved the Red Bull was the car to beat. Newey built another winner for the 2010 season, whereas Mercedes who took over Brawn produced nothing.

  • @tonypap1 it won the first 6/7 races, then everyone caught it up, im sure he could have lost the title in the last couple of races ?

  • @tonypap1 It's spelt "prima donna", idiot.

  • @R33Racer

It's the predictable, online English teacher who has nothing of value to add other than to pick out spelling and grammatical mistakes.

    Sad wanker.

  • @tonypap1 No I just know clearly better then you. RETARD.

  • @tonypap1 At the end of the day, no matter how much you hate, they're still better than you will ever be, richer than you, and live better lives than you. Keep hating though, it's about all you can do lol.

  • @tonypap1 I agree with you but you mean prima donna. PMSL @ pre-madonnas.

  • Mansell..Mansell raced with the greats..Prost..Senna..Berger..Piquet..etc..No formula 1 driver of today could handle those cars back then. When you actually "drove" the car and clutched and shifted with no computer aids. Formula one is so boring now..i miss the old days..

  • You're right. I'm brazilian and a great Senna fan. Mansell was one of the most talented and skillfull driver in F1. Specially on that era, with great drivers like Prost, Senna, Piquet, Lauda...In many occasions he beated Senna. I really miss those years, when F1 was F1!!!

  • @davedavid86 Mansell all the life

  • Mansell, of course.

  • @davedavid86 Mansell was better driver than Button.

  • I don't even know why Button is in you equation. =P

Mansell's numbers aren't those of someone who won the championship only once. He has like, 30-32 victories?!?! Countless fastest laps and poles?!?! =)

  • He was also runner up 3x times against Prost, Piquet and Senna.

And his injury in 87 was not current safe racecars and almost ended his carer.

Today's cars and tires might have given him 2 maybe 3 titles.

  • Maybes and ifs don't win championships... "if Senna was alive, if Schumacher stayed in Ferrari, if Alonso stayed in MacLaren...". What happened is what matters.

  • A great overtake. The old Mexico circuit had that great corner on it which was slightly banked(similar to the Tarzan corner at the Zandvoort circuit). It was however tricky to pass there, but Nigel did it. A great race, and Prost was excellent on that day as well!

  • berger gooooooo!

    austria ftw!

  • I was there in this fantastic Mexico Grand Prix 1990, I was 17 years old, great drivers!! fantastic times!!! Please F1 must comeback to Mexico City again!!

  • very good maneuver from Nigel but Berger didn't look very smart. Gerhard, since he knew Mansell was quicker, had to protect on the left side were the track offered more grip. Anyway, great to see. Senna vs. Prost was another pair of shoes as Ayrtons tyres were over and indeed, some laps after the Ferraris overook him, the rear tyre exploded. Berger contrarily did change tyres earlier in the race and should gain a better result.

  • in my opinion one of the best overtakes of all time.

  • And one of the best drivers of all time

  • very good mansell.

  • that honda engine sounds so wicked

  • these armchair racing drivers make me laugh! why can't we just enjoy the video?

  • The video is there to be enjoyed. No one is arguing about that. But ranking this overtake as the number one of all time also makes me laugh.

I presume there is another youtube just for real drivers like yourself, so what are you doing here blending youself with amateurs?

  • i am an armchair racing driver too, and so wouldn't make a fool of myself by saying 'this is better than that' when it is all just a matter of opinion by people who most likely never raced anything more than their ford fiesta...

  • Maybe you remember that Senna-Prost-Mansell battle that day..... When Prost catched Senna, a beautiful battle begun..... Now, if you see the battle Prost-Senna, you'll realize that Alain also tried to go for it taking the outside line of Peraltada curve.... The difference is that Senna (contrarily to Berger) moved a little bit on the left, so Prost had to lift, but Prost attacked Senna as Mansell attacked Berger: on the outside. Berger lifted (lost) but Senna blocked the right line (won).

  • Comment removed

  • Senna-Mansell on that curve???? LOL Gianca, it would have happened the following thing: 2 top drivers dead, and maybe 20 or 30 spectators or marshals injured or also dead..... For sure, an unavoidable crash, as they used to have. Just look at Portugal 1989: Mansell charging on the inside, Senna closing the door, and both cars destroyed.... and 2 drivers out of the race!!!!

    Portugal 1989: v=Guj2nSkBVZo

Watch at it!!! You'll see Mansell going for it, and Ayrton closing a door as large as a ship!!!

  • @lucianoestivill - I guess you're right....

Just I'd point out that keeping the respective lines (inside and outside) through the Peraltada could have been

extremely dangerous, but abs.correct though. Blocking or shutting doors is

unfair, but keeping the line with full

    throttle is abs.correct :without squeezing

the opponent on the inside and without trying to push the overtaker into the sand.

btw Ferrari was not better than McLaren

so they had similarly perforning cars I guess.

  • You guys are joking this was any good comparing to the great overtakes of the F-1 History...

Only british people praise him that much. Watch Piquet's overtake over Senna in Hungary 1986, or the duel between Villeneuve and Arnoux in Dijon 1979 (I think), or even Hakinnen over Schumacher in Belgium.

Then you'll see some real display of skill. There was nothing great about his manouver. The commentators are over reacting.

  • 'nothing great about his manouver' How come? Mansell weaved around in an attempt to unsettle Berger, then preceded to go round the outside of a 150mph corner, dangerously close to the marbles and all whilst using old tyres!

Piquet's move is brilliant, but he had a superior car and there was far less risk involved.

Over reacting? I think James Hunt knows what he's talking about seeing as he actually raced in F1 and was world champion in '76.

  • Man, If I am not mistaking, this is the Peralta Curve, a very fast one. Have you ever watched those stupid INDY races? you'd see how many times they overtake on the outside.

That means that faster the turn is the easier it is to overtake. That curve was pretty much in full-throttle!

If you watch it again, you'll realize Mansell took the right path to it. Comparing to piquet's overtake, you´ll see he did like in go-kart racing! With the car sliding across the curve! Less Risk?No way!

  • You can't really compare the bumpy Peralta curve to the silky smooth ovals that Indy cars race on, plus the fact that it is tighter and has less banking.

How is it easier to overtake at higher speed? You have less thinking time for correcting an error or for setting the car up for an overtaking maneuver.

I'm not trying to play down Piquet's move by any means; it is spectacular, but Mansell's move is equally spectacular in it's own way.

  • So, you are saying that Monaco and Hungaroring, the slowest tracks, are full of overtakes, since they have a lot of time to think.

Those races are boring as hell, a procession. No overtakes at all.

Also, if you remember Mansell trying to pass Senna in Montecarlo in 91 (or 92 I think), you'll see that, in fact, it is the opposite of what you are saying.

The comparison with Indy racing was just to show an extreme example. I don't like it either.

  • That's not what i'm saying at all. I didn't say anything about the speed of tracks. Of course, the overbearing influence on overtaking opportunities are the track characteristics. I was pointing out that at higher speed you have to react faster in response to changes.

Yeah it was Monaco '92. What a finish that was!

  • I give up. Is there another video for us to argue about? :-)

    Cheers

  • The move by Nigel was superb, but you have to take into account any skilled driver like Mansell, Senna, Rosberg, Piquet, Prost, Arnoux, Gilles, Jones, Schumacher, etc., are capable of doing that move.... The fact is that the move was a success because Berger lifted to avoid a serious accident.... With Senna it would have been quite different: they would have blown through the air like a cannonball after a heavy crash...... anyway, I appreciate Nigel's balls of steel and car control, no doubt...

  • I think in that place (one of the most dangerous courners ever) any driver would have done the same that Berger, the contrary could mean the death. The move is in the top ten of history for sure.

  • I think that it´s the greatest overtake in the history of F1, surely the younger would tell that Hakkinen over Schumacher on Spa is better but taking into account that this curve in Mexico in that time was specially tricky, also taking into account the lesser amount of grip on the tires due to the final laps and the outside line, I'm absolutely sure it´s the greatest overtake ever

  • very sad Mansell's time with Ferrari turned sour...I firmly believe he would have won the WDC with them in 90 had they not brought Prost over.

  • how did mansell fit his bollocks in the cockpit...

  • Berger said after this -

"If i hadnt of lifted the accident would have finished outside of Mexico"....

  • per questo e molto altro sarai sempre il più amato pilota guerriero di tutti i tempi. Nigel Mansell, Leone d'inghilterra, il Re del sorpasso!!!!!!!!

  • best overtake ever

  • This is my personal favourite F1 overtake. Mansell was always the best passer. His moves were legendary against the likes of Senna and Piquet and Prost. But this was his best. Amazing to think that for all his success with Williams later in his career, people seem to agree his best races were with Ferrari, despite the lack of success he had with them.

  • Yeah, it makes Berger look like a rookie.

  • I remember taping the highlights of this race & then mid way through it jumped live to the race.

I still have it taped & that move Mansell did always gives me goosebumps. AND that was after spinning & seemingly very far behind Berger.

    Thanks for the upload 5150UK.

  • They should of kept Mexico in the World Championships. I loved the esses and the last really fast turn (forgot it's name) A superb track.

  • that would be "la peraltada" , one of the nicests turns in all F1 championship....

Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez was a very nice track

    cheers from Mexico City :D

  • Westhamfan123, your right they did cut the live action for the last 10 laps or so. Dont know if the BBC planned to do that, was great that they did. The best thing about it switch back from ITV no more crap like with 3 laps to go when theres a fight for the lead, were just off for short break.

  • Amen to that. I'm really looking forward to F1 being broadcast on the BBC again! With any luck they'll use 'The Chain' for the intro music also.

If Brawn GP stay on form then it'll be the icing on the cake :)

  • Got DAMN that engine sounds good.

  • Yeah, great move.

Looked a bit like Berger was weaving left and right along the straight - slightly dangerous!

But Berger's a funny guy - an Austrian with a great sense of humour - have you heard about all the hilarious practical jokes he pulled on Senna when they were both at McLaren?

  • Yeah Berger is a great guy and he and Senna were almost like brothers. It's a shame he is not involved with STR anymore.

  • Yeah, I think you're right. I've seen a copy of the highlights and it says it cuts "live to the race" about 10 laps from the end, at the bit where Prost passes Senna.

  • Fantastic upload and fantastic race. Of a fantastic era actually. But I wonder if anyone can answer me this Q? This race was shown as highlights only on BBC but then the highlights "caught up" with the live race action, showing the 2nd half live... as I recall anyway. Just wondered if anyone somehow remembers that at all and can confirm that was right!!?!

  • Mansell is the Man.

  • Guts..

  • Mansell's move was stunning, indeed, but Berger told afterwards that he easied his corner entry in order to let Mansell pass him, otherwise they'd both crash. :P ;)

  • I LOVE THE MAN!

  • Lol I find that hard to believe - I think Berger just lost him in his mirror.Look how much he's moving his head around trying to find him!

  • Maybe, although I never meant to underestimate Mansell's manouver.

  • any driver who gets passed has to take avouidence action to some degree

  • Incredible that move in that curve, one of the most dangerest in racing history

  • the best era in Formula 1 definetly. Now a days there are so ugly cars with so many wings every where. You can not see the helmets any more wich was also very nice to see then.

  • This was when F1 had the spectacular drivers and incredibly brave racers like Nigel Mansell. He is still the best!

  • heroes

  • was in my mind the greatest driver eng has ever had a legend in his own underpants :-)

  • He Cannot be Touched!!!

For them kinda Manouvers he is Pierless!!

  • Mansell is one of my biggest inspirations. That's the best overtake ever IMO. Worn tires, fast corner, and he passed on the outside where there is less grip. Wonderful.

  • True ... It was FABULOUS ... incredible as Mansell

  • Ferrari Rules!!! Nigel Also!

  • I have Nigel Mansells autograph.

I Think hes one of the bravest Race drivers of all time.

  • Spyxter, i think you may be mistaking a cheating german disgrace to motorsports who was in the right place at the right time but showed no sportsmanship whatsoever with our Nige, a true gent who drove with more balls than a bearing factory. they both drove ferrari's. . . one was better, the stats show otherwise.

  • 111teamomori - Mansell ?.....had he just got

a bigger brain instead of extra sized balls...

  • fantastic

  • In same year, mansell overtakes berger in hungaroring, in outside too! Amazing pass

  • I miss the mexico track, it was awesome, one of my favourites. Nigel mansell always had guts and would do the type of overtaking moves, that other drivers wouldn`t think twice about doing.

  • this and the one in 1989 hungary are the greatest overtakes in history

  • what a great circuit this is. now when the A1GP go there they skip the last corner and go through a chicane instead. why bother going motor racing if you're going to chicken out of the difficult corners? fucking waste of time.

  • And and and Mansell going round the outsise..lmao..murray your a champ!

  • Wow, overtaking Berger, at over 150mph, on the OUTSIDE of the Peraltada, that is brilliant.

No wonder Mansell was described as one of the great overtakers, awesome

  • I can't be doing with anti-Mansell crap!

I followed that guy for years, he was THE most unlucky driver that I can remember....and that's quite a few years!

Nigel, if luck was on his side(which it never was) would have been a triple Champion!

A pure racer with no regard to sheep like politics!

    I miss you Nigel!

    F1 misses your kind!
