The Spanish weren't using 1891 Mausers. That rifle was sold to Argentina, and chambered inr 7.65mm. The Spanish used both 1893 and 1895 Mausers, chambered in 7x57mm.
I had an opportunity to purchase a very good condition .30-40 Krag service rifle (infantry) for $500. I can kick myself for not getting it, but I had just purchased my third and last M1 Garand and I was saving my pennies for an '03 Springfield in excellent condition. The claim of a "glassy smooth bolt action" in the Krag is true. They were beautifully designed rifles, and until the improvements in the Mauser 93 and the later Mauser 98, the Krag was the best thing going.
Too cool, who dosen't like military history. "Rough Riders" is actually a pretty cool movie. I have it on 2 DVDs and I enjoy watching it fairly often. Too cool! Thanks for letting this guy share so much neat stuff.
it where not made under licens of krag but the norwegian arms manufactor kongsberg, its all norwegian genunine rifle, and it where designed of krag and jørgensen not only krag, i have a norwegian long krag jørgensen 6.5x55mm great rifles truely elegant rifles
@krimkrim8 This rifle was only in service (as the m1892) for 11 years before it was started to be replaced by the M1903 and was totally gone by 1907. it was outclassed by the Spanish mauser, and performed poorly in the jungle during the Philippine insurrection
These were not built 'under license at the Frankford Arsenal' they were built at Springfield Armory MA. Frankford Arsenal built ammo.
And yes, Skamsleinen, Ole Hermann Johannes Krag was Norwegian and not Danish though Denmark was the first nation to adopt the Krag design for its military in 1889. Norway adopted the M1894 Krag in 6.5X55mm in 1894-95 and the US adopted the Krag formally in 1892 but production wasn't begun till 1894. These guys get the history mostly right but not everything.
the reglamentary riffle of the spanish infantry in Cuba was the german-spanish Mauser 98 mm. In Battle of San Juan, Cuba, 1898, 400 spaniards armed with mausers repeteadly rejected the attacks of the 10000 Americans of the Roosevelt´s Rough Riders.
A true Spaniard rifle i have held it i am a cuban viva la cuba para los amigos que pedietod su vida en la gera le los espanoles y los americanos For Cuba!!!

and the spanish weapon? i am asking because i read that the Krag in that war had big troubles against the Mauser 1893 used by the spanish
gorozon 8 months ago
@gorozon I think it was the range of the 7mm Mauser round that was out classing the 30-40US, not the rifle or action. but I could be wrong

They were using model 93's, not 98's. The spaniards did not adopt a 98 until 1943 or so.
