  • Hi Marie

  • (cont) Not tipping enough or at all is not stealing. The federal government recognizes a gratuity as "a voluntary payment as a gift or reward for services rendered". If the customer pays for what they ordered, they have not committed theft of services. Furthermore, the fact that your employer chooses to pay you pittance does not logically follow that the customers are responsible for subsidizing your wage. Your life is your responsibility and nobody else's.

  • Oprah never said this. It's an invented story by revisionist historians that cannot be verified anywhere.

The tipped employees section of the Fair Labor Standards Act (24JULY09 revision) states that you may earn not less than $2.13/hr in direct wages and be taxed on your tips. However, if your direct wages plus tips do not meet the $7.25/hr minimum wage, the employer MUST pay the difference. Servers will NEVER lose money because the law protects them.

  • It's really not the customers that are stealing from you, it's your employer.

  • AHHHHH HAHA YOU LOOK LIKE A WAITRESS AT THE WAFFLE HOUSE.

  • How come no one can come up with the video showing Oprah saying this?

  • Personally, having been a server, cook, and manager, I'd rather they come in and tip 10% than not come in at all! I'd love to see the video clip where she supposedly said that, though.

  • oprah can go to hell! fuck that stupid rich bicth!

  • I can so understand the frustration behind it, but that was actually a rumor. supposedly a harmless rumor, but not to us who wait tables. There are lots of people who think like that, especially famous people who never learned how to figure out an appropriate tip, but Oprah's advice was just a rumor. AND for those who don't know 20%!!!

  • Did Oprah really say that? If a server reads this, then they know what Im talking about......You can take Oprah out of the Ghetto, But you cant take "The Ghetto" out of Oprah!

  • she didn't grow up in the "ghetto" I am a server. and though i get the idea of the statement. maybe that is not the best way to express what you mean.

  • The reason I said it like that is because I didnt want to profile.... you know the touchy subject of being racist... when in fact my best friend is black and is right here while I type this...........Yo ..if hat shit iz tru then I dont even want tu serv Oprah...(unless she tips me 29percent)>.Dumb Biznatch talkin white women on how to take money from me!

  • I totally understand. I was just saying that as someone who doesn't know you using the term "ghetto" is profiling. you are making and insinuation based on the general concept of where someone lives AND using the "my best friend is black" phrase never helps either. I understand that your intentions were not to be insensitive, but as someone who doesn't know you they can come off that way.
