i fly gliders, it was a bit dodgy from the pilot to fly near the DZ but he maybe on the edge of the DZ limit according to his GPS which maybe out compared with real-world positions
On a good soaring day when lots of gliders will be flying it would make sense not to jump near lots of cumulus as thats where you will find most gliders, go for bigger gaps (if poss) as we tend not to cross those
why jump out of a perfectly servicable aircraft? thats what i find scariest about this video lol jks
It's difficult to estimate distances in the air, it looks like more then 20 metres. Sunday, I plane flew past me while I was under canopy, much much closer than in this video, I estimated it about 20 metres too, I could see the silhouette of the pilot head. Still 40 or 60 metres is still too close for comfort!
Glad that nothing happened to you guys besides a scare, be carefull!
@flippingell A Glider, well anything to my knowledge as a glider pilot, should not be flying over Weston on the Green as it is a parachuting zone, is it not?
More like 60m if you compare the distance to the wingspan of the glider (usually 15m), but still looks scary. I know I would be feeling a little shaky if i was in that glider :). Guess he should have been on the frequency checking for skydivers before entering your airspace...
Parachute jumping sites (and normal operating times) are marked on aeronauntical maps. Operations outside these times are advised by NOTAMS. No glider pilot wants to try to occupy the same airspace as a skydiver. Sometimes they get lost and sometimes parachute sites operate outwith usual times without notification. Experienced pilots avoid such sites at all times, and when near radio on 129.975 to advise that they are near but will remain clear.
Deliberately jumping out of a perfectly serviceable aircraft and then hazarding a glider in flight is a silly thing to do!

I fly gliders. That's a long ways away, and you're rapidly descending.. Still, not a smart move on their part.

why don't the parachuters jump from an airport where there are no gliders - stupid.

READ. THE. DESCRIPTION.

I Did.
Before you jump from an aircraft you should be certain that there are no aircraft underneath.
If you cannot see clearly, (because of cloud), then you should not jump. Its not the glider pilots fault, its the spotters fault.

@flippingell Why do they have to jump at all, in my mind they have a death wish.

good reason to look for traffic on the climb to altitude and before you exit the Plane.

just make sure you are not jumping into an inpromptu air show
