The movie was also shot on location in Abbazia Sant' Antimo, Montalcino (both locations belonging to Siena district), Marmore waterfalls. The real rarity is the final moment in Rome which was filmed in the interiors of the cathedral of Monreale in Sicily. I have had this joy to visit most of these places in the recent years. BELLA ITALIA!
Yes, this scene was filmed in San Gimignano! Many scenes of the movie were filmed there. We see Torre Rognosa which stands 51 metres high in front of Il Duomo, Torri Salvucci which you can see from Piazza Erbe and Torre Grossa. Excellent location for the movie like that! I saw an extra video where Zeffirelli is showed to advise his cast in San Gimignano, Piano Grande di Norcia (Umbria), Gubbio.
Remember Christians, the will of God is no Catholic, Protestant,Orthodox, Penticostal, Adventist, JW, Etc. NO DIVISION, Only Christians, holy, helping and sharing instead of buying and selling.
"That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me." (John 17:9-21)
Ascended master? No.. let's leave the New Age out of this..that isn't what the film is about. St. Francis responded to Christ in the best way that he could at the time. If it were not for debts I have to pay off, I might likely do something similar. I feel like leaving this world and what temptations I can behind and joining some monastery where i can serve God without the world encroaching on me. Then maybe I can be free of scrupulosity.
I feel like doing exactly the same . I love this film and am becoming a lay Franciscan but I too want to do a little of what st . Francis did . Maybe we should rebuild a church and see what happens .
@elauadeinsf That would be interesting. Though it could be that Jesus meant His whole church and not the physical building that was rebuilt, He seemed to have honored St. Francis' devotion to Him.
@Perktube1 Indeed , you have got it right there . The essence of Christianity is all pointing to Love and Wakefulness , almost every parable . St . Francis points many in this direction , which is good because most people feel free to comment on one book in the world , free of reading it ! ( The Gospels ) .
If I do rebuild a church it will have to be in England methinks , I will get it filmed by a friend , and also I am no carpenter so it could end up being quite a charming film . ( ! )
@Perktube1 "Then maybe I can be free of scrupulosity." you mean "un-scru.." the problem with this approach I am having is that to be "free" of it this way, one simply exports the cross of making one's way to others who fund such a monastery.
It's like having other people kill to make room for people to live in a place without killing.
@LooksAeterna No i mean scrupulosity. And that was written a long time ago. I'm somewhat free now in Christ, getting freer as I go. And I didn't have to go to a monastery. I wouldn't compare living in one to killing though.
@Perktube1 Oh I see you used "scrupulous" in the negative sense of exaggerating conscientiousness into an obsession, I thought you wanted to join a monastery - among other things - to be able to live up to high ethical standards, that is being scrupulous in the positive sense.
@Perktube1 The "killing" analogy was not a comparison, it only served to show the analogous logical relation. If living ethically is protected through surplus achieved by others in such great measure - which always involves unethical action - it is a form of trying to live without sin by exporting sin. That's all I meant.
I hope you make good headway walking with Christ and please pray for me to be able to do the same.
@LooksAeterna I see. But perhaps it doesn't have to involve unethical action. Remember Paul; he was supported on his journeys by donations from churches, and he thought it right to do so. A servant is worthy of his hire, don't muzzle the ox treading out the corn, etc. Giving to others, especially the poor,is considered a blessed act. It's more blessed to give than receive, but both giver and receiver are blessed.
@Perktube1 I find it difficult to see a source of income which is at least neutral. Perhaps I am too pessimistic to "scrupulous" in the negative sense ;-)
@Perktube1 I've learned since then you can't really run from temptation. I mean, Jesus was in the desert 40 days fasting and He got tempted, though that's what He was there for. And if I join a monastery I can't really make a difference in this world. Not unless I manage to write a book like Brother Lawrence did.
Hi Azorka. I'm not sure how Isaiah who lived centuries before Christ Jesus could say he was "uncomely". It's likely neither Francesco nor Chiara were as beautiful as the players cast... but being Italians... there was a better than average chance.
What we see here in this stunningly beautiful film is where St Francis has had a nervous breakdown. Everything he knows and values will "break-down" and the Beloved Brother is now on the way to becoming a realized being and Ascended Master.
I love this movie, all-time favorite. But don't know that such good looking Francis and Clare were necessary to maintain interest in the film. Jesus was "uncomeley in appearance" [Isaiah 53?] (unattractive), and accounts of Francis were that he too was unattractive. Clare in this film is breathtakingly beautiful. Why is the usual Hollywood method of using beautiful people necessary in this film? To provide contrast, juxtaposition with the lepers? Doesn't seem necessary. Feedback?
i am answering two questions in one comment. first, how did isaiah know what jesus looked like - well he was a prophet and he is said to have predicted the coming of the messiah.
second, i think the reason francis and claire are so beautiful in this movie, is because movies are visual, and while we watch this movie we are continually reminded of a vision of beauty - both inner - and outer.i think that the greatest beauty of these actors is in their expressions - and how they make us feel.
That's a good way to view it. However, the lepers are visually awful and it would seem to be the films purpose is to convey that one look past outward appearance to the inner being. About feeling...not meaning to be argumentative, but Mel Gibson's 'The Passion' wa all about feeling while raking in millions. While we homeless have 2-5 year waiting lists for housing.
i am not being argumentative either ...we are all to some extent products of our culture - and i think that all cultural decisions are to some extent compromises. many people learned about clair and francis this way ...
art has to take liberties with reality or else it is only 'reality' . art has to get our attention before we will pay attention to it.
yes - social problems are a part of our being a society. - being homeless cant be easy - how ironic that st francis chose to be homeless....
Ironic indeed. Both he and Lazarus would be arrested for trespass in this country. Lazarus would be arrested for panhandling (he was a beggar--Luke 16:19-31) and sleeping in a businessmen's doorway, and St. Francis would be arrested for same--sleeping on private property. Like I was threatened with more than once, most recently here in Bellingham, WA. Sleeping on the porch of a church becasue it provided cover from the rain. They almost arrested me.
civilization has as its collateral war and profit. st francis found his answer, but his times and ours are very different..its up to us to find our own answers. we have to find refuges from the bitterness and difficulty of life, and find the things that give us joy. what we resist persists. we must escape and find the places inside us and outside us where we can experience love, solace and joy. that is the big challenge we are faced with in life - at least that's what i think.
That's the problem. There is no refuge. the U.S. has the highest incarceration rate and its not mega-church Ted Haggard types that are being incarcerated.
You must create your own refuge, as St. Francis did. It's possible. But you must work with other people in order to do it. Not easy, but then it never was.
@Azorka82, I would agree with you in the "Hollywood's-beauty-as-a-must " point , but....here is my confession: I watched this film when I was about 14.....Its message impregnated my mind and my soul for the rest of my life....but, when I watched the film again, when I was about 40, I suddenly noticed how extremely good looking Graham Faulkner (St. Francis) was....and I suspected that it influenced unconsciously in the young girl I was...It was maybe necessary, remember Plato's idea of beauty....
Oh I love this part of the movie. I had a parakeet that would hear this bird chirp and would start chirpy loudly. I suppose he was talking to the bird in the movie. What a special moment and a special little bird in my life this clip brings back, thank you.
Alabado sea el Señor y su siervo San Francisco. "Pues dando es como se recibe, perdonando se es perdonado y muriendo se resucita a la vida eterna. Amén."
This scene is so sweet.. to me the little sparrow is just God calling Francesco's soul! No danger and fear, just love!

In stiller, wehmutsweicher Abendstunde,
Umklingen mich die längst verschollnen Lieder,
Und Tränen fließen von der Wange nieder,
Und Blut entquillt der alten Herzenswunde,
Und wie in eines Zauberspiegels Grunde
Seh ich das Bildnis meines Liebsten wieder.
