This video just goes to illustrate how closed minded the world's scientific community can be. Even when confronted with the evidence of observations made by one of their own, it's resistance to revolutionary new data seems almost hostile. For a community who's soul purpose should be the tireless pursuit of truth, it would seem to be violently opposed to any modifications to the existing paradigm. Does this attitude serve the interests of the world's people? I think not!!!
If someone comes to me and say "hey! I got an antigravity machine/ time traveling device/ non-conservative crystals...I say Cool. show me. explain to me.
Skepticism is best maintained by questioning, not by avoiding the unorthodox.
Is it the human ego, that is afraid of fallibility ?
why are humans so intent at keeping the group meme, contradicting the method
even the best scientists, would not LOOK at his work. what do they care of his beliefs, why not follow the evidence.
I am so happy for Dan Shechtman, what a great scientist. Having said that, some of you need to chill, one of the "non believers" was LINUS PAULING, widely regarded as a premier chemist of 20th century.
@iamufreak- Calling the non believers (including Linus Pauling) " retards and trolls" shows only your ignorance. I feel sorry for you.
I wrote a paper on quasicrystals for one of my physics seminar classes this semester. Too bad there isn't more information on these new types of crystals. It's very interesting!
basic but good explanation of how they are built, but seriously lacking in describing their properties and function. Hahah, improved shaving razors? Come on.
Same goes for our monetary anti-economy system today. Many ppl react to ZM's proposal with the RBE, a Resource Based Economy as impossible wich ofc is laughable. Once ur trapped inside your box or paradigm it seem's impossible to break out of it with the exception for some brilliant minds and thinkers :))
To think this man actually shouted "There is no such animal!" but was open minded enough to investigate his findings further - what if he allowed himself to be intimidated by the likes of the double nobel prize winner who thought his theory was rubbish?. Scientists should ALWAYS follow the scientific method of inquiry - but as @iamufreak said, they are often as biased, warped and petty - just like the rest of us.
Why doesn't mainstream science realise the world is in the mess it is today because there's only a handful of courageous scientists who are willing to think out of the box.It would be nice to think instead of ridiculing these people they should be supported.
I think it's interesting how even in science we have "believers" and "non-believers". Just doing research is not enough, you have to fight for your research to be taken seriously.
So, Nobel prize = genius+effort+strength of character+open-mindedness.

I read about quasicrystals when I was a kid. I found them amazingly beautiful. It is great stuff.

What a great scientific mind [and very likable, too]. Anything more from Mr. Shechtman on YouTube you recommend?

cab anyone speculate as to what the potential applications are regarding quasi-crystals ?

just wondering how quasicrystal look like. is it silvery, matt grey or other colour? and how to produce quasicrystal in large quantity?

Is it possible that Quasicrystal structures in steel are the actual scientific explanation for the fabled Japanese samurai steel and Damascus steel?

they forgot how to think outside the box - once they make the box that's it we can't change the box = BS
