And before that, Serena already had 6 major titles to Sharapova's 1, including the "Serena Slam". So I don't know how you take a player with those credentials, then watch her beat Sharapova, and say something like "Sharapova is a better player". It's frankly mind boggling!

@PokerWhale Steffi Graf was a great player but she did dominate in a weak era compared to Serena. The only great players in Steffi's prime were Seles and Sanchez-Viccario. Graf wasn't dominating while Navratilova was still in peak form. And Hingis and Davenport both reached their prime near the end of Graf's run. So really, she didn't have much competition besides Seles for most of those years. Serena has had to deal with Venus, Justine, Kim, Sharapova, Davenport, Hingis, Capriati, and Maruesmo.

This is when Venus and Serena were at the top of their game...they absolutely scared THE HELL out of the WTA and beat bitches DOWN! They were fearless, didn't have any injuries and they KNEW WITHOUT A DOUBT that they were the best players on the tour. They had a sense of cockyness with it too that I loved. I would love to see the 1998 Sydney match between Serena and Lindsay. Lindsay led 7-5, 5-1 before Serena staged a dramatic comeback to win it in three. Thank you for adding the bit at the end, I HATE carillo, most commentators hate serena because shes cocky, yes she is, but I love that shes HONEST with her cockiness, unlike a couple of other players (ahem) on the mens side. Its suprising how much serena actually upholds the integrity of the sports other than her Horrendous outburst at the USO which she will never live down, but up till that point always had a lot of integrity.

I just think she meant at that moment in time Sharapova was the most in shape, and right on her game and Serena had been a little out of shape and tired/worn down lately.
