painter needs a drug test, medical exam and the result should be positive both ,you need blood test and you should never sneeze when you passed those are the criteria before painting the queen and the royal will accompany you to the processes.
Many portraits are great because of the story they carry. I rate this as one of the very best in history, not just because of Rolf''s ability and skill, but because of the story it created also. I see a lot in a human when they smile, and once our Queen smiles, a million expressions come at once. She is gracious and an amazing person.
I actually like this portrait. when I first seen a copy of it I did no like it at all. The mouth seemed wrong to me some how. I appreciate this one now, and have for a couple of years. I think the portrait looked too familiar, for being one of the Queen. I was into the formal/regal ones from the past. Such as the big coronation works. In those nothing is given away by the sitter. This one could well be my Grandmother... all good
This is doubly fascinating for me: as someone who loves to paint, it's interesting to see his process (especially since it's so different to mine); and as a British man, it's interesting to see the Queen in a semi-informal setting, trying hard to be polite and composed whilst sick and surely wondering why the man doesn't just stop nattering and get on with the painting!
I see comments that the painting is awful, etc. What they don't get is that it's a certain style of painting. It does pick up on the sparkle in her eyes.
@cupmyplums I doubt he was paid at all, its more an honour and a pride thing. Imagine being the doors it would open for a relatively unknown artist (i mean i know Rolf is pretty famous but you get what i mean about the rest of the guys)
Thank you for this very interesting video 324wilson - really enjoyed it and I think its one of the nicest portraits I've seen of the Queen - Rolf Harris seems a lovely warm person!
Off duty? You really think so? Surrounded by a camera team knowing that every bit of your conversation is possibly "on air" later on? I pity her very much in a way - I think that she is such a nice and humorous lady but due to her upbringing and rank she always seems kind of stiff and sweet/sour if you will. She always seems distanced.
I saw this when it was first on and its really great. So rare to see the Queen in 'off duty' moments like this. The painting toured around UK galleries and I went to see it at my local gallery! Thanks for posting Wilson.

The Dargie painting is just stunning. It shows just how beautiful she was as a young Queen.

It's a rather good portrait of the Queen. Still he didnt got rid of that green hue of the dress colour on the painting....

I wonder what Rolf was paid for doing the portrait? £10,000? Maybe £20,000?
cupmyplums 8 months ago
@cupmyplums That is too much. I don't even think that he was paid at all. I maybe wrong but many painters do it voluntarily.

@324wilson I think they get the honor. And I think that the honor of painting the Queen is much more worth than money.

That really is an outstanding portrait of Her Royal Majesty.
Long may she reign over us. God Save the Queen.
See you all at the Diamond Jubilee in 2012.
