I'm glad he didn't get nominated for an oscar because he was too good for Hollywood. He always won at Venice and at Cannes and that is a testament to the man. If I was a director I would much rather european accolades than american ones.

The problem I have with Tarkovsky (and most philosophical movies) is that since these films are different, hard to understand, and slow, viewers will automatically praise it as a masterpiece while more linear mainstream stories are just bashed as pieces of garbage. I love most Tarkosvky films but I personally found Stalker and Nostalgia to be totally overrated, beautiful imagery and symbolism but not much else. Tarkosvky himself praised The Terminator and his only complaint was the acting...

Symbolism is unimportant.The film as a whole with all your subjectivity makes it art.

''linear'' movies usually are made to look good, to entertain the mainstream and often have no real ideas behind. too straight, obvious, conventional- unreal.

Tarkovsky is a poet, Instead of choosing each word carefuly, he looks for the perfect image. His films are perfect. He only made 7 feature films because he didn't work, he was creating a universe.

I agree, you cannot pass on experiences. But you can give advice on, prepare for or provide backup after certain ones. It is not as if life is meaningless to future generations, isn't it? Reminds me of that parable of a young tree in "Stalker", today I think it is one-sided and wrong.

I disagree that you cannot force people to feel suggested emotions, you can see that each day in the mass media. Emotion is evoked for certain purposes, as emotion is stronger than reason.

to that extent ('not taking in suggestet emotions'), I do belive this is the true nature of an artist, and it´s quite complicated to act and do things in those therms, life is complicated, but, I do belive he set an example, and maybe sacrificed himself, in the name of life. You are missing something "kingofskateop". Yes, there are other masters out there, certainly Kurosawa, Bergman, Ozu and etc... All other directors seem to subscribe to the old religion beliefs in which this world was created for us. Watch all the directors you have name and you will see a passive background. I've watched nearly every director's movie that I can, and I'm still watching them again and again. Tarkovsky is a strong director who showed us the real power of cinema: "the pure language of cinema" that can affect "the unconscious/existence" of all human... But he couldn't reached that true language too, (he was so close with the "Mirror" and the "Stalker" but a real cinema should reach from children to the adults (like Bazin said). The editing should flow with the same speed of heart beats..

Tarkovsky's Sculpting in Time, best book ever. Should be standard reading in cinema and art classes. If you're at all interested in Tarkovsky, cinema or art in general it's a must read. Very simply and honestly written, but has much wisdom.

I should like to say that Tarkovsky was most probably the best of directors; and yet I do prefer Pasolini as a film maker. I not sure why that is so. Much of Pasolini's stuff is indeed political and aesthetic pretension. Maybe Tarkovsky's films seem a little too constructed and precise (notwithstanding the fact that Pasolini hung over the shoulder of every cinematographer he ever met). I just don't understand myself.

Tarkovsky was closest to the notion of a genius in cinema. There were none before him, and unfortunately they won't be anymore... regretfully. Its my dream to see a film that approaches in importance and eloquence great novels of our and past centuries, but there are no such films. Tarkovsky was the only one to breach this barrier and was able to create body of work that paralleled in importance, eloquence, beauty, and mastery other bodies of work in such established art form as literature.

i've read that tarkovsky didn't think much of kubricks films - especially 2001 (often compared to solaris)... but i've never found any trace of what kubrick may have thought of tarkovsky's work... i reckon he would've loved it - and felt quite in awe of what tarkovsky was achieving... but he would not feel in any way inferior to him..

I first fell in love with film through Kubrick. However, I did not realize until I had seen all of Tarkovsky's films that while Kubrick is a technical master, Tarkovsky is one of the only true poets of film.
