Play on PC and your loading times will be quite short, even shorter if you have an SSD, although those are very expensive imo.

I remember playing HP Chamber of Secrets on PC and the loading times were super long (or maybe it was also the PC I used).

Nowadays I get long loading times with Red Dead Redemption (PS3) >_> or Uncharted (about the latter: when you load a save file from the main menu).

the worst loading screens are ones you have to wait around forever without anything going on. Games good and bad alike have this issue, as it was a problem in games like Morrowind for the xbox as well as more recent games like Duke Nukem Forever.

@ 5:51 no, Assassins creed wasn't the first to interactive loading screens. The Dragon ball Z budokai series on the ps2 were the first to actually allow gamers interact while it loaded.

I love the ones in The Darkness, but that's because I like the story, STALKER Clear Sky has the most annoying loading screens since even though the game requires the DVD to be in the drive as you play, it doesn't constantly spin, so when you get to the loading screen, you have to wait for it to spin up, its painful, luckily if you have the DD version, like on STEAM, its a non issue.

Personally, I loved the loading screens in Okami after you discovered that what at first seemed like an inane interactive screen actually granted you in-game rewards in the form of Demon Fangs. I think that's what loading screens should be. If the player wants, they can tune out and let the game load, or they can try and earn a small in-game reward every time they come across one.

GTAIV's was appalling.

Why?

Because it gave NO indication whatsoever that is WAS a loading screen. This isn't usually an issue, except for the first time the person plays the game and they don't know this.

The first time you play GTAIV you're presented with a menu screen with various options, one of which is "Play". You hit that then are given 10 minutes of concept art and music. Makes you think it's a trailer that's gotten stuck in repeat.
