avraham perrera from avaraham preira portuguese sephardic surname name of the pear tree given to new christians or crypto jews or portuguese marranos, jews in portugal also had names of fruits and animals like whale crow like kafka-crow, common practise in europe many other names including names of fish, the hebrew cohen usually royal rabbinicaldinasty changed to rabbit or coelho levy to oliveira
Yes, this really does sound like a magnificent prayer. Avraham Perrera's beautiful voice, and the melody, and its repetition -- are all magnificent. But Yigdal is actually more of a lesson. A concise poetic summary of Maimonides' 13 articles of faith.
Its placement at the very end of the service (as I know it, Ashkenaz) also gives it a special meaning. In a moment we adjourn from the sanctuary to the social hall for oneg & refreshments.
Thanks for the English translation.....since we have a new cantor in our synagogue, Yigdal has been discarded for Adon Olam(which is lovely, but it ain't Yigdal!)
Our late cantor(z'l') came from a Yemenite family and his Yigdal melody was distincitive.......
@mavenett - Yigdal has some many wonderful cantations. My favorite is a very traditional one that is in maqam hijaz or a close approximation to the ahava raba mode. Most of these I believe are not recorded and are lost easily to new fads in the music. The Mizrachi ones are in grave danger of being forever silenced in particular.
This hauntingly beautiful tune is typical of Spanish-Jewish (Sephardic) music. I like this better than the tune in my synagogue, which is a traditional Eastern European (Ashkenazic) melody.
My Mom brought over this recording on tape. I figured I might try finding it on Youtube. It is so beautiful, you had me crying the entire song, and the slide show is fantastic--very tasteful. Where can I get the CD?

Yigdal
O let us come the living God adore
God is & was & will be 4ever more
God's oneness is a thing of mystery
No one can fathom such true untiy
God is without a body, form or frame
No mortal lips God's essence can proclaim
God reigned before this teeming world was wrought / long ago when all the world was as yet naught
evynr 2 years ago
continued...
Our God created every living thing / All creatures owe their love to God sovereign
God has sent some prophesies sublime / but none have seen like Moses in his time
evynr 2 years ago
...continued...
The law that God ordained is true / It needs no changing, it is ever new
Our God discerns the promptings of the heart / God knows the deeds we do before they start
Noble folk must strive for a noble life / because the fruits of evil are unending strife
Our God will grant our deepest hopes for peace / let us work to make all hatereds cease
Within our souls there is immortal flame /
Always we will praise God's eternal name

Here is the first verse from a rhyming interpretation:
O let us come, the living God adore
God is, God was, God will be for ever more.
