I work professionally in the security field. I know from my training that the force used against the women was not 'reasonable', 'necessary' or proportionate. I am glad that the police officer has been charged with assault. It is a minor assault so I doubt he will go to prison. He will just get fined / community service etc which I think is fair but he should certainly loss his job and pension!

Firstly, I'd like to start off saying, I am not a "jobless hippy protestor" and originally didn't agree with the G20 protests. However, seeing this video shows very clearly that this police officer should not be in that position. Many of you commenters who are defending his actions are quite right when you say she provoked him. I wouldn't go as far as saying her provocation deserved physical violence but she could have given him cause for concern. But you are completely missing the point...
...The point of this whole situation is, these people were standing around, remembering a man who was killed the day previously, protesting peacefully against police brutality (quite rightly so in my opinion). Yes, the situation did get heated and it was tense, but why? Why did the situation get heated and tense? because the police were behaving illegally! They were illegally and without cause or justification, holding those people in one area.

On the 2nd (this vid) the cops were a bit restrained, but the 1st was very different - they indiscriminately beat anyone they fancied and treated everyone like criminals instead of the very few who were - 9 hours of detention without being allowed to leave or have access to water or medical attention, I saw it with my own eyes. One protester threw a scaffold pole at cops, not all of us. He was a dick. A small number of demonstrators chose to fight with the police - maybe 3-5%, not all of us. One bottle was throw in the direction of - not at - police who went to help a guy who had collapsed. He died soon after being attacked by their colleagues for no reason. The first people to try to help him were medically trained protesters who the police shoved away without even trying to ascertain what had happened.

The events to which you refer happened the day before this was shot. This gathering was a peaceful one to respectfully mark the death of Ian Tomlinson after he was attacked by police. The police chose to ignore that fact and treated the protesters here pretty harshly for simply attending a memorial event. Personally I saw way more police assaulting peaceful protesters than vice-versa at Bank on the1st, and much of the related footage available on you tube and elsewhere supports my experience.
And the recent reports in the media bare your argument out how exactly? The police behaved like utter bastards on the 1st and 2nd - I saw it myself. Even the ones who weren't actively violent upheld a policy of aggression, intimidation, non-co-operation and denial of basic human rights. Many good cops who refrain from slapping out of frustration because they realize part of their job in a public profession involves remaining cool in 'trying' situations- like any other public job. Comparing cops hitting people out of anger to the way parents hit their mischievious kids is pretty far fetched. Public jobs are inevitably frustrating- being professional is a necessity.

I work professionally in the security field. I know from my training that the force used against the women was not 'reasonable', 'necessary' or proportionate. I am glad that the police officer has been charged with assault. It is a minor assault so I doubt he will go to prison. He will just get fined / community service etc which I think is fair but he should certainly loss his job and pension!

On the 2nd (this vid) the cops were a bit restrained, but the 1st was very different - they indiscriminately beat anyone they fancied and treated everyone like criminals instead of the very few who were - 9 hours of detention without being allowed to leave or have access to water or medical attention, I saw it with my own eyes. One protester threw a scaffold pole at cops, not all of us. He was a dick. A small number of demonstrators chose to fight with the police - maybe 3-5%, not all of us. One bottle was throw in the direction of - not at - police who went to help a guy who had collapsed. He died soon after being attacked by their colleagues for no reason. The first people to try to help him were medically trained protesters who the police shoved away without even trying to ascertain what had happened.

The events to which you refer happened the day before this was shot. This gathering was a peaceful one to respectfully mark the death of Ian Tomlinson after he was attacked by police. The police chose to ignore that fact and treated the protesters here pretty harshly for simply attending a memorial event. Personally I saw way more police assaulting peaceful protesters than vice-versa at Bank on the1st, and much of the related footage available on you tube and elsewhere supports my experience.

Yes, but it's not just the violence of the minority. The overall tactic of containment, restriction of the right to protest, denial of water and medical attention (people asking to be let out to get these were refused), and the aggressive way in which these policies were implemented all add up to becoming part of the slow creep towards a police state. What if it takes them 9 years to catch the guy who rapes your daughter and then he only gets 18 months? The system is screwed up to the core.

Protesters should be met at railway stations or bus stops and put back on the fuckers!! There's enough footage and cunts on here commenting against the police to see who they are. Give them a life ban from London and make them get a job so they have something to preoccupy them. Alternatively, don't publicise these meetings just the Bilderberg meetings are not. In China you'd get decades of hard labour and in Iran or Saudi who knows if you'd be heard from again. That's why cops here have to be professional and show why this society is different. Don't you think so? Once the standards start generally going down- with flimsy 'excuses' making unprofessional conduct permissable, it won't be long before you yourself get some of that impulsive brute force unjustly used on you at some point.

There is NOTHING going on here until 3:11, when some poor black dude tries to leave, you can hear the conversation with the WPC, who was doing fine. It's when one of her burly mates steps in and picks up the guy by the collar that it all kicks off. The woman who was slapped was just protesting at this mistreatment. Using force is one thing, the kind of force that involves holding someone's arms and maybe pushing them away from you- ie, self defence. But smacking someone across the face is assault, and "being gobby" doesn't warrant that.

Watch the clip again, The cop pushes her and several others back saying "Get back", She then charges at him aggresivly, shouting her head off. Thats when he backhands her. It was more like self defence on the polices part, The crowd was not following Police direction and action needed to be taken...

domestic abuse is obviously a bad thing, and obviously some men deserved to be punished

cops aren't paid to slap around people they find annoying- look at how casually he did it- he's done it before. Many good cops who refrain from slapping out of frustration because they realize part of their job in a public profession involves remaining cool in 'trying' situations- like any other public job. Comparing cops hitting people out of anger to the way parents hit their mischievious kids is pretty far fetched. Public jobs are inevitably frustrating- being professional is a necessity.

1) admit she was in the wrong from the start
2) prove that her upstart which was another person backing her up from potentially starting a riot
the more he lets her get away with her bad and unruly behavior the more likely someone else will think it's okay to act as she did. The raise in numbers makes them harder to stop and raises the likeliness of a riot

Cops only arrest when the law is broken.... it's not for them as you are implying to give people warning face slaps 'to keep them in line'.

tbh I don't know for a fact that it is against the law to treat someone with mild force if they continually deny your authority if you are a policeman, especially in a situation where an arrest isn't appropriate for every little thing
I say it is mild force as she got slapped, you can't even get a black eye from that, and she got hit with more force, it was in the leg, where no major damage would be caused
