Can we not just mount these on a couple tanks and use them as Anti - Personnel vehicles, after all we need something to put the ZSU "Shilka" in it's place.
They are great now. in 1983 thru 1989, We used to designate the CIWS (close in weapon system) letters as Christ It Wont Shoot. The internal circuitry was too fragile for shipboard electrical supplys. Fix it, shoot it, fix it again and put it away hope you dont need it without time to fix it before hand. They have improved things now. The new mount we got in 1991 was reliable.
@BornRandy62 I had an old VHS tape called "Modern Weapons of the 21st Century" or something like that many years ago. It showed the "B-2" bomber, "Standard Missile" and others including Phalanx CIWS. It showed it destroying bombs, aircraft, missiles, etc. but only in tests. Did that thing ever work, and also, I read that Phalanx systems were being removed and eliminated, is that correct?
@clintonearlwalker the second evolution of the Vulcan Phalanx was very good. The first one had awesome parts that didnt play well together. The gun was always reliable. The mount and radar was reliable. ut the computer tied it all together and you have to remember that those were the days of main frame sized personal computers. We had a PC on the ship made by IBM that ran at 8 mhz and we upgraded it to 256 megs of RAM !
@clintonearlwalker The CIWS mounts shot down many incoming targets. Under every condition that you can think of. The limitation was that it only held a limited amount of ammuntion. (less than a minute of firing time) The ammo was linked and electrically fired so you had to shut down all of the topside radars inorder to reload to eliminate the potential of a premature cook off. if you are being shot at do you want to shut off your detection capabilities?
@BornRandy62 Thanx for that, I would imagine reloading would be an issue on something that fired so many bullets so fast. I seem to remember reading a ship had it's Phalanx turned off when it was hit, I don't think it was the USS Cole though. Are they still building these things and deploying them, or do you know? This was a fairly expensive program and I was just wondering if it was still being deployed. I would rather have it, than nothing.
@clintonearlwalker in 1987 USS Stark was hit by an Iraqi exocet missile in the Persian Gulf while Iraq was still best friends with the US. Those were the years that CIWS was normally left shut off because it would fry electronic circuits if you left it turned on. Iran and Iraq were in a shooting war that did not include us. and Stark was in an area outside of the conflict zone altho the Gulf is a relatively small body of water and gets smaller the further north you go.
@BornRandy62 Thanx for that, that's it, the USS Stark I remember now. I looked on Wikipedia and there is much info about Phalanx. Apparently, it is still in use, and used by several nations (including Pakistan). There are several other versions of CIWS deployed by other nations including Russia, China, and the Dutch. Thanx for your info and stay safe, the Persian Gulf can be a dangerous place.
This might be the most american solution to getting rid of a missile, just throw as many rounds at it as possible, you're bound to hit it eventually. Makes me proud to be an American.
@Coolcow6 Computer operated. It Triangulates incoming rounds and shoots them out of the sky based on a rounds calculated trajectory, very useful. Often, the radar to detect the incoming armaments is well outside the perimeter to give it ample time/warning to engage. You can see it reacts to a warning and calculates it's own firing trajectory before the round is within range.
it looks like a cartoon character from a diatance. Great for when the Jehovah's Witnesses come round. I'm amazed I have not seeon one on one of those shoot what ya brung vids from US firing ranges. Very cool.
@xrayfishx Sorry it is obvious you never served sillyvillian! These are real and work to perfection. The best time to watch is at night at sea when the rounds hit down range and bounce off the water! Been there, done that and got the wounds!
@oStirFryo i don't know, maybe 100 MPH is exaggerated. but ask any PS3 player about the stationary AA guns and almost everyone will tell you that the bullets travel much too slow to be effective, at least when you are a kharg island and all the action is like a mile away.
I can picture in my head this thing being spun up... And the C.O. getting whoever launched the damn missile on the phone, and being like "heh heh heh watch this s***." Incorrect, but that's what's in my head
Now, I wonder how far those rounds go when shot at such a high angle ? If they continued on a ballistic arc they would travel well faster than terminal velocity and could potentially cause harm to persons/property many, many kilometers away. REALLY high angles, rounds would reach maximum altitude and simply fall back down under gravity alone.
@SBwingman We (USA) shouldnt't use them in places we shouldn't be. That being said, better them than us. War is nasty and should be avoided at all costs, but if were gonna do it, we oughta go all the way.
@SBwingman Due to the speed and the distance they travel, the rounds break apart after a few thousand yards or so. With that arc most of them are dust before the top of the arc. The rest break up when falling.
@masterjarred32 Ahh, thank you for the reply. Very interesting and exactly what I wanted to know.
If you don't mind me picking your brain a little more, how do the rounds know how far to self-destruct? Is it similar to the way a 40mm grenade fuse works, IE it counts the number of revolutions the projectile has made?
@SBwingman No, the rounds arn't strong, the speed there traveling and the distance they go, the rounds are not stable enough to stay intact, so they start breaking apart till there basically like dust.
@planesareawsome it's also used for destroying incoming missiles on naval assets which other countermeasures have failed to stop, as a last line of defense.
It's usage as protection from indirect fire is really interesting though, it detects incoming mortar rounds, then calculates its point of impact. If that point of impact is within the area it is programmed to protect, it then does further calculations on how to intercept the round, and then.. well.. BRRRRRRRRRRRT...BOOM...no more mortar =D
The Phalanx CIWS: turning any object deemed a threat by any U.S. authority (i.e., everything) to dust, 100% more effectively than almost any alternative.
the system costs 1.5 million and there are around 45 systems out. they are some deployed in the middle east and have defeated incoming mortars. The rounds are made by general dynamics and cost around 30.00 a round. so do the math 30 (cost per round) x 1550 ( the amount in the ammo drum) = $46,500.00
this is actually what is called a C-RAM and it is used to shoot down mortars, rockets, and anything else that is a threat to a base and it is a scary sound to hear because you know your being attacked and yes it will wake you in the middle of the night oh and to PSPmaster321 again im a tax payer also in the military but i am more than happy to pay every penny to this anti-threat system
@PSPmaster321 again that burst had probably saved about 5 soldiers so are you telling me that the burst shown here that was probably worth 1 million should not have happend? all i can say is your about to piss off alot of army, marines, civilians, and airforce members such as me about how their lives, children, husbands, wives, etc are not worth that 1 million dollar burst
@skullcrush67 "That burst" was in fact a training one...so it saved jack shit. Anyway, you have a big mouth on you, which almost makes me doubt the validity of your claims to being in the military. You just sound like a typical Walter Mitty to me. A real serviceman wouldn't make such a big deal out of what I said. I wasn't insulting anyone, just stating what is true, I didn't even say it was a bad thing...
tl;dr just shut the fuck up you candy ass keyboard warrior.
@PSPmaster321 really? you basically told me that the military is an ass hole for making sure that this system works on a regular basis... yeah it used your money and mine as i pay taxes in the military too but would you rather be the bullet bag or have that system to stop mortars? your choice, you can stand infront of us or stand beside us by the way candy ass keyboard warrior? and before that you type something about how a normal military person wouldnt over react... now who is?
@PSPmaster321 im just giving true facts as to why this weapon system is in deployed locations... and it is there to protect the people that reside on the base... oh and by the way you try to call me out and say I'm not military? okay then when did you hear about balad iraq closing? in december? ha your wrong i know the true date of its closeur so give me your guess and ill tell you the true answer...
@skullcrush67 1st that burst didn't cost a million dollars. 2nd that was training. 3rd i'm ex military and i served so people could speak freely. so if the arm chair Rambo wants to talk shit who cares get a grip.
@Megabyteme325 first of all I'm going to clue you in as i am still military i have been to balad iraq i almost got killed by a 122mm and yet you served so people could speak freely and talk shit about the people in the military that give us a bad name and group us normal humans with them... yeah good job... sorry pal but i fight for people's freedom but i don't believe in freedom of speech that is one thing life has taught me because if people had freedom of speech i promise
@skullcrush67 your pathetic, freedom of speech is one of our most endearing freedoms. If you are that insecure over a keyboard commando crawl in a hole and don't come out. grow up. that is one freedom you took an oath to protect when you swore to uphold the constitution. could care less about the 122mm shell. that has nothing to do with the 1st amendment. lost a lot of friends to ied's and enemy fire. doesn't change the fact that we took an oath to the constitution.
@Megabyteme325 that you would see a hell of alot more people like PSP... calling us pieces of shit... so yeah you go ahead and let PSP tell us that are still in and you retired and obviously brain dead dumb ass that your a piece of shit... sorry pal but I'm not going to let that happen... you can stand out of my way now...
Those rounds maybe land on a far planet and make aliens declare a intergalactic war against earth. But that would not be a problem because we can just shoot them down.

Those rounds maybe land on a far planet and make aliens declare a intergalactic war against earth. But that would not be a problem because we can just shoot them down.
