I was 5 years old...first time ever at Knott's Berry Farm and this unknown singer was performing this song there.....yup, Marty Robbins....WOW! There will NEVER be another like this amazing artist!!!
I'm a Marty Robbins fan and I like this version. However, the original recording by Burl Ives has the perfect mournful tone and Vaughn Monroe's deep voice gave it a whole new quality when he recorded it. If you search for Monroe's version make sure it is the early one and not the later version with a studio orchestra and choir.
I heard a story about Lerner & Loewe when they were writing the songs for the 1951 musical "Paint Your Wagon". They needed some kind of authentic-sounding cowboy ballad, and Frederick Loewe, who is Austrian by birth, wasn't sure how he could develop the melody. Alan Jay Lerner played him "Ghost Riders in the Sky", and after listening to it a few times, Loewe produced the melody for the show's big hit song, "They Call the Wind Maria".
@karatiannadiante--he died way to young. My father was a big Marty Robbins fan and I gues I inherited--El Paso, Water, Big Iron----all fantastic songs. He has such a natural voice which few singers possess today. In a word, he was a great singer!!
Well, to each, his own. Ives and Monroe are good but Cash's gravely whiskey and cigarettes voice makes the song sound like it should - like an old cowpoke headed for hell (and no, I'm NOT implying that's where Johnny went!) I also like Sourdough Slim's version - search YouTube for it.
This is great to be able to compare performances. I would like to hear from all you Marty Robbins fans if you would do me the honor of visiting dubldvideo to watch Bill Barwick's version of this song. I think he does Marty proud.
Hi to every lover of Marty Robbins fab.singer great entertainer ,but the voice to soft for Ghostrider this is Vaughn Monroe songs anyway I stilll enjoyed it
look stan uop. he was a young cowboy working with his dad on the range in douglas,az. after many cattle drives he had the picture in his mind and later put it to words in a song.
@tarquin45 I don't know where you got your information about Stan Jones, never writing another song from.. but he wrote over 200 songs and has numerous gold records for the songs he wrote. He also wrote stories and tv scripts, and helped on many Western Movies.. and there are many unfinished songs according to his wife.
This song makes me depressed, but happy at the same time. Depressed because we will never have story telling songs ever again, and happy that we have someone nice enough to share this great song.
This was the only song I could listen to when I lost my sis. The house was too quiet but nothing else was real .. yes it does something to the brain, this song
MY BROTHER DIED JULY 4TH 2010. A FEW WEEKS BEFORE HE DIED HE PLAYED THIS FOR ME OVER THE PHONE. HE WAS LOOSING HIS MEMORY AND SAID ALL HE WANTED WAS TO GET BACK TO TEXAS. @Wisconsin53125 Thank you so much! I think he is too. With all the "Great Artist" that have passed, I know for sure there is no lack of wonderful Music and dancing in that Great Area of Space and Time we call "Heaven". @quietdove1 My condolences. Your brother was a great Texan. Seems he appreciated Marty Robbins a lot. Great taste. Hope he gets all he wants where he's at. All the best to you too.
We all have those moments. You were right to say something. Sometimes I forget.
Now, we are all going to have a wonderful day, at least here in Texas, because we are actually under the 107 degree mark! We had a cool front come in and cooled us down to 89. lol wonderful evening, even had a breeze!
I just thought of something! The breeze I felt last night on the porch here in Texas last night was probably "Those Ghost Riders in the Sky", coming over, i'll bet my brother Jerry was with them! Your SiS too Trey. Both of them riding with Marty. Have a wonderful ride yall! Thanks for the breeze.
The greatest cowboy song ever written is El Paso, written by guess who? This is a good version of this song. If Marty was not satisfied with this effort, it just shows you how high his standards for himself were. By the way, Marty never sang a bad note.
If Marty's version wasn't released because he wasn't satisfied with it I can't imagine how epic the final version would have been because this version is awesome. =D
now im no true cowboy, seeing as though i was born and raised in connecticut and when i got my first pair of cowboy boots after my parents divorced and my mom moved to texas, i knew that i had something i have to do, so i plan to move to arizona someday, maybe go find texas red but i believe you dont need to be from the 'cowboy states' to be a cowboy, you just need the right mind and ideas

Stan Jones actually did a lot of Disney theme stuff in the 50s. Sadly, he died at 49, so that "old age" pension was probably well appreciated by his relatives

@SemperFidelis0229 While I was never a big country fan, Hank Williams, Marty Robbins, George Jones Johnny Cash, Patsy Cline,Dolly Parton Tammy W., and Loretta Lynn cross the barriers from country to popular simply bc they were so darn good. I agree, today's country music could take some hints from these lengendary artists. Thanks for responding.
Thank you for the Vid. I like it a lot. But, what I always find Ironic is that many times the artist records it, but does not think it is good enough for the fans. In some cases maybe it does not fit right on the next album. But, when it does come out, the fans love it.
Thank you for your video and Marty's version. I still miss him closing the Opera. Now that I am older, I can really see his voice was incredible. I just noticed his 'tacky' clothes as a child. That remark was how I saw it as a little girl, so please don't take that as a negative. Now I can see him as a great showman and singer. Thank you.
I think I was about 6 or 7 and used to listen to this by Vaughn Monroe. It was the first song I ever learned. This would have been around 1946 or 1947. Wonderful song, no matter who does it.
Marty Robbins never sang anything badly (imho!), but I think I can tell what he didn't like about this recording: there's a spot near the end where he seemed to lose track of the rhythm and there was a longish wait before he sang the next pickup, along with a tiny indecisive quality. Again, nothing big. This IS Marty Robbins, with his golden voice and his impeccable interpretations, but one imagines he was a perfectionist and this just didn't please him. I'm glad he didn't destroy the recording!
@GuinnevereB This is one beautiful version of this classic. I noticed the lull but he recovered beautifully. I'm sure he was his own worst critic. I'm glad he didn't destory this either. I thought it magnificent.
His guitarists just lays it down on this track, as he did on most of the trail/gunfighter ballads he did with Marty Robbins. And Marty is off the chain with his vocals. The most haunting singer when he needed to be.
With all due respect to Marty Robbins and the Sons of the Pioneers, as i Truely like their versions., of this Legendary cowboy classic. .... If u like this song, check out the version by the original recording Artist who had the #1 hit with it, 1949, ...........Vaughn Monroe!
I totally agree with your comments about this song. I'd rank this among the best written songs of any genre, with incredible music to go with haunting lyrics and a great title. I almost believe there is no bad version of this song, and certainly Marty Robbins does an incredible job, although there are several other versions that are in the running for my money as the "best" version. Great post.
I truly believe Marty knew he was born in the wrong century. I often thought of that myself. That would have made my birth in 1846 instead. There isn't the same freedom today in this modern world where you can't hide from prying eyes and camera's everywhere watching your every goddamn move. But I digress.
I live in New Mexico, and sometimes think of this great, haunting song when I gaze at the vast sky. You can often see the ghost riders galloping from cloud to cloud--or else a UFO, headed for Roswell.
@terransage i think ghost riders sounds much better riding thru the sky than a ufo flying across it. you are fortunate to live in a western state where so much history of the west has taken place. nm texas wyoming colorado utah california arizona i would like to live in one of them one day. there will not be another singer like marty and God bless each and every one of you fellow Martuy fans.
And not a one of us has a problem with that of course. There's just something about having country music as I work the lever on my repeater, especially Marty's 'Big Iron.' Of course, within the first hour your own notches exceed one and nineteen more (don't know why, but I love the way that rolls off the tounge).
Truly an outstanding song. Well done by Marty. It has been recorded by so many. It has an evangelistic tone to it. I was about 11 years old when I first heard it played on the radio in about 1949 by the Sons of The Pioneers. I remember where I was and exactly what I was doing. The song has made a lasting impact on me.
marty robbins, true all around entertainer and showman.this man could do it all.above all,he could hold an audience spellbound with his beautiful songs and have them crying and laughing at the same time.the only country performer written about in rolling stone magazine.the best of the best!
marty robbins, true all around entertainer and showman.this man could do it all.above all,he could hold an audience spellbound with his beautiful songs and have then crying and laughing at the same time.the only country performer written about in rolling stone magazine.the best of the best!
Hmm, this is a really interesting version. I like Marty Robbins, but I think that truthfully I like Johnny Cash's version better. Simply because I like the eerie atmosphere and I love slow songs in minor keys :D. Still, this is pretty good, I never even knew he sang it!
I love this song. Have heard many versions of it and this is one of my fave's. Marty's voice is beautiful. I just like the way he delivers a song. Another great version is Vaughn Monroe and the best baritone ever Bowser of Sha na na.
@Tonithenightowl Did Bowser sing "Ghost Riders"?? I used to watch Sha-Na-Na all the time but don't recall ever hearing that song, but you can't get much deeper than Bowser.
@sugarbunny49 If you would like to see it, the skit with song is on youtube. Just type in sha na na and the song title. I love Bowser's version. The skits were corny but the music was fabulous lol. Thanks for responding.
I say it's a REAL CLASSIC for sure. Reminds me of my older deceased brother who used to sing it to me when I was little as he played his guitar (he was 13 yrs. older).
Marty was a great singer and a favorite. Would like to suggest, tho, you give Roy Rogers and the Sons of the Pioneers a listen, especial "Along the Navajo Trail"," Blue Shadows on the Trail" and "Cool Water". Not as rousing as some of these, but the old singing cowboys had a thing going for quite a while.

I see alot of John Wayne pictures in videos with his songs. I think the characters in others (Like Big Iron) is more like The Man With No Name.

Man, Marty Robbins is most certainly the king of cowboy tunes. His voice is just so suited to the genre.

@draunt7 yeah but I can't remember if it was Johnny Cash's version or The Outlaws' version. Its been awhile since I've seen it.

GuinnevereB 1 year ago
@GuinnevereB This is one beautiful version of this classic. I noticed the lull but he recovered beautifully. I'm sure he was his own worst critic. I'm glad he didn't destory this either. I thought it magnificent.

His guitarists just lays it down on this track, as he did on most of the trail/gunfighter ballads he did with Marty Robbins. And Marty is off the chain with his vocals. The most haunting singer when he needed to be.

You can often see the ghost riders galloping from cloud to cloud--or else a UFO, headed for Roswell.
terransage 1 year ago 69

Tonithenightowl 1 year ago
@Tonithenightowl Did Bowser sing "Ghost Riders"?? I used to watch Sha-Na-Na all the time but don't recall ever hearing that song, but you can't get much deeper than Bowser.

@sugarbunny49 If you would like to see it, the skit with song is on youtube. Just type in sha na na and the song title. I love Bowser's version. The skits were corny but the music was fabulous lol. Thanks for responding.

I say it's a REAL CLASSIC for sure. Reminds me of my older deceased brother who used to sing it to me when I was little as he played his guitar (he was 13 yrs. older).
I have always loved this song.
olgamarie888 1 year ago
Do you have a lossless version of the audio?
ramp3 1 year ago
Marty was a great singer and a favorite. Would like to suggest, tho, you give Roy Rogers and the Sons of the Pioneers a listen, especial "Along the Navajo Trail"," Blue Shadows on the Trail" and "Cool Water". Not as rousing as some of these, but the old singing cowboys had a thing going for quite a while.
