I don't give a DAMN if gas becomes $50.00 a gallon. I'm not a Hummer-owning dumb ass, and high gas prices are necessary to force auto makers to get away from gasoline!
Your post is a clear example of emotions over logic. At $50 a gallon our economy will totally collapse and we will end up in total poverty as in the third world nations. I know, that's fine with you. But I think you will be singing a different tune if and when that happens.
And it came to pass...Auto makers are now being forced to retool. The economy ended up collapsing due to failed Republican policies and deregulation, the exact reasons gas prices were high in the first place. Gas prices were just a tiny part of it.
Both McCain and Obama and most all politicians seeking or trying to get to an office are calculating about what they say. The point is which policy does America and the world need TODAY. Oil is NOT INFINITE!!! and it is NOT RENEWABLE!!! Such as Solar, Wind, and Water. All natural and INFINITE. It's about CHANGING our views of this WORLD we live in. If we all try to compete for something that is running out, we will be at WAR for INFINITY.
I agree. We need to develop alternative energy. But not to drill our own oil before a replacement has been established is economic suicide. That is what got us where we are today.
Obama said: there is no clear evidence that (drilling domestically) "will strengthen the economy and reduce prices to consumers". That is nonsense! The more oil is produced and refined the lower prices will be. Simple economics of supply and demand.
Why can't we drill/refine oil to keep prices lower in the transition?
Because we already have enough oil in the reserves to keep us going while we make change. We don't need to keep making things worse by drilling offshore. It will make our environment worse than it already is. We need to start making the change NOW before it is too late and we can't reverse the damaging effects of what we have already done.
And how long will it take to bring alternative sources to the market? It's been 8 years since George Bush declared a push to hydrogen and where is it? How long has the government pushed ethanol yet it takes more then a gallon of oil to produce a gallon of ethanol. And a gallon of oil has much more energy then a gallon of ethanol does. How many consumers can afford a solar array on their home at $25-$50 thousand dollars?
You mentioned hydro, can't do that. We might kill a rare minnow or snail.
My solution to the energy crunch is nuclear power plants and electric cars. This could be accomplished in a matter of years. I fear other alternatives will take decades to develop and implement on a national scale that is affordable to most consumers.
And don't tell me nuclear power is to dangerous. France gets 80% of their electricity from nuclear generation. The navy has been using nuclear power for over 40 years. This could all end now with nuclear power but the Greens won't let it happen.
Think about NUCLEAR WASTE!!! They don't have enough places to store it NOW. They have been sending some of it into SPACE. That is a DANGEROUS alternative. No one wants to have a NUCEAR facility in THEIR back yard. Especially the POLITICIANS that suggest it. That is NOT natural and good for the environment.
ALSO, the current administration has not put any resources into the research of natural alternatives. That is why we haven't moved any further. Not because the technology could not be developed, but because there has been no WILL to try it.
Read the space reviews and comments on nuclear waste. You are right, there is no solid proof the government has done this YET, but how many times have they done things the public doesn't find out until too late to stop them. Nuclear waste is NASTY. With all of the earthquakes and storms we have been having, if an earthquake ruptured a power plant or waste facility, WE will all be in TROUBLE!!! I don't want to GO like that.
Also, the talk of using space as a dumping ground has been going on for YEARS. Don't think they are not capable of doing in without you knowing it. There have been a lot of satalites and secret space missions in the last 10 to 15 years. After seeing what this administration has done, and even finding out what the PAST administrations have done to get around public checks and balances, REPUBLICAN and DEMOCRATIC, We should be more watchful of what OUR government does in OUR name.
21 billion barrels?? The US consumes 20 million barrels per day! - that equates to enough crude oil for 22 months.. Is he serious!!

Obama sounded like a complete idiot or a calculating politician which is just as bad.
Sounds like some people need an education on pricing based on supply vs demand.

Also that kind of drilling, even if it was feasable, would take at least 10 years to take effect.

No nuclear waste has ever been sent into space for disposal. where did you get that fact?
Nuclear power is not natural? Look at the sun!
Nuclear waste is powerful but very small. It can and has been handled safely. The French do it. The Navy does it.
