Well when I have ever used something like this we used a colourless liquid e.g. water. This sets the machine up to white light and then when you compare samples it can tell you the wavelengths absorbed or let through.
This is an INSTRUMENT, not a machine. I had a professor who took a point off each time any type of instrument, including a spectrophotometer, was referred to as a machine.
