  • I used to use a turkey fryer to boil but spoke with a local taxidermist and found a new way to boil them. I bought a $20 hot plate from lowe's turn it on about medium high. put your turkey pot of water on and put in about a cup of the borax and put your skull in and let it sit for 24 hours. you won't have to touch the skull with a wire brush or anything. and it doesn't get hot enough to cook the grease into the skull. also approximately how much of a bottle of peroxide do you use per skull?

  • @bucky2882 Not sure how much I use...1/4 bottle, if that. I start out by laying on the skull cotton pads and cotton balls soaked with peroxide for a few hours. Then I switch to painting on peroxide paste until it won't absorb anymore. Hell of an idea to use a hot plate. Might have to try that. Guess the only drawback might be having to keep an eye on it so that it doesn't burn the garage down. Thanks for the tip. Good luck to you.

  • That was exactly what I was looking for, thanks!

  • @jtschid0910 No problem. Glad it was helpful. Good luck to you.

  • I use a tooth brush and a knife to get smaller peices out. the final thing i do before bleaching, is use compressed air to blow out the gunk!

  • hydrogen peroxide does work works great to bleach skulls actually and is a hell of alot cheaper

  • The process can be sped up significantly by sprinkling caustic soda crystals onto the skull every now and again when removed from the boiling water.

Once the majority of the meat is gone scrub the skull in washing-up liquid which will help remove more of the grease and stuff before bleaching the skull.

  • @guybaxendale That definitely does work but seems to increase the chances of the nose falling apart if you're boiling the head of a young (1.5 yrs) deer. That's just my experience though and we may have used too much of the soda crystals. Thanks for the comment and good luck to you.

  • @110sunview

I can imagine that being the case. The Caustic soda can help enormously though on heads with tougher to shift meat. Thanks for posting the vid up. All the best Guy

  • Best European skull mount video on youtube! thanks for the video im 16 and im going to do mine today, i shot a 9 point on saturday. Thanks again for making this great video.

  • @thegreatdeerhunter Congratulations man, and thanks for the compliment. Hope your skull turned out great. Good luck to you.

  • Does boiling affect the antler coloration? I'm boiling my first one at the moment, and am scared to let the burr get in the water, but it needs to get in there in order to boil off the top of the head.

  • @specfever Sorry for the late reply but in my experience the water will NOT change the coloration of the antlers. We've boiled a lot of heads, at least 30, and have never seen it happen. Good luck to you.

  • dont you have to have a license for skulls? like to collect them?

  • @ToxicThePanther No license required for whitetail deer skulls.

  • @110sunview Oh ok just wondering.

  • yes i found this video very helpful.I have a few questions though. I boiled my skull last night and got 99% of the soft tissue off, but there are some small pieces clinging to very hard to reach areas, what do you recommend i do to remove this stuff? Should i just go ahead and peroxide the skull and hope it dries up the remains?

  • @hugegiantfrogs I use needlenose pliers, forceps, whatever it takes to reach the last bits of flesh. Sorry it took me so long to get back to you.

  • I really enjoy this video because the size of your deer is resonable haha wathcing all those other videos have 150 160 class deer and it was starting to depress me lol thanks fo sharing

  • @tmead16 No problem, glad you liked it. Good luck out there and thanks for watching.

  • @tmead16 its good to appreciate your efforts out hunting. FYI< its kind of silly to even put much emphasis on horns, while I myself am proud of what I have, the smaller ones are the tastier :D

  • @mako7828 They're all trophies to me, regardless of the size of the antlers!

  • Thanks for posting. That was quite informative. I've kept antlers & skulls before, & I've always boiled 'em, but I've never used peroxide. Thanks for the tip. I've mounted the tail feathers of a Tom I killed years ago, which I think turned out well. I'll check out some more of your videos while I'm at your channel.
