The issue is probably loitering - we railfans need to remember that when we visit most sites we are trespassing. Most people are cool about it, but if you get rousted just move to another site. I've had police talk to me at various places and most of them are cool. 9/11 made a lot of people nervous about people hanging around public places. Sadly, here in Sacramento we've had a couple of people (not necessarily railfans) shot at passenger stations.
Those cops had no right to tell you that you could not railfan where you were. What they probably don't realize is that even though Metrolink owns the property, if they do not have a posted anti-filming process. Then they cannot say a damn thing to you about it.
