It's delightful to see a mature, unworried and loosed Bernstein together with Gedda. Gedda, most sensible when it comes to conductors, he was forthcoming in expressing his reservations regarding Von Karajan, and how he felt Karajan subjected singers to his will. Certainly, the total opposite here with Bernstein, who at this period in his career might have been to soft on singers. (Check the Carreras tamtrum in West Side Story). In short, Gedda must have been in heaven, he acted and sang as so.
Gedda is amazing!!. His voice control is beautiful. Mi video loaded is incredible: "Opera Fausto de Gounod, Nicolai Gedda. Acto III, cavatina Salut, demeure chaste et pure."
Gedda is so great the rhythm of this aria is very complex and he still manages great frassegio and humorous singing .Notice that he hit that huge high B-flat without preparing or scooping he doesn't sing any note before the B-flat and still hits it in the center.Great Nicolai
Bernstein kinda bugs me here :-)! I love Candide but this (and his studio recordings of Candide and West Side Story) aren't exatly good, overblown to say the least. And the way he jumps and hops, brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr, a lot of selfloving. Gedda is wonderful, but I still prefer the original William Olvis as the Governer, he sounds nastier :-)! Still just my opinion.
So would you say that Gustavo Dudamel is full of self-loving?
I feel that Lenny is trying to communicate the feeling with which he wants the piece played, thus manifested in his little dance. He was well-known for that sort of thing.
It's not exactly the dance, it's the whole way he does it, plus to his own music. I'm no against conductors having a bit of fun; check, for example, "La Belle Helene" under Harnoncourt, now this guy really is having fun :)! But it seems natural there. In Bernstein's case, it looks a bit overacted :)! Still, I would like to point out that it's just my opinion, nothing more, nothing less :).
you dont have any mercy, he?... coming straight out of the inquisiton, he?.... this is a life recording from London, almost all had the flue and are half dead... and Lenny is Lenny... I mean, if you dont like him, why do you watched this video?????
Congratulations on your great Candide post. I heard there two of Olvis excerpts in this part. His is very different from Gedda's. In the recording, Olvis, a baritone, gives the perfect Broadway version, Gedda's live performance is that of a lyric operatic tenor. In contrast to Olvis, Gedda delivers a mischievous Governor, not a straight forward villain, much more interesting.
As for Bernstein "self-loving". It's his own funny piece he is conducting. Why not "love thyself".
Nicolai Gedda and Jussi Björling is two "superstars" from Sweden. On the "women side" we had: Jenny Lind and Birgit Nilsson. My grandfather: Rudolf Walin (1820-1868) sang with Jenny Lind at the Royal Theatre in Stockholm for about 150 years ago!
Gedda is incredible, What an absolute master of even that ridiculous lyric,,,in what for him is yet another foreign language, I am English and I cannot even say the words so quickly
Such a noisy man...

LOVE IT. Bernstein is hilarious and Gedda is perfect even at this age. HA HA. They seem to be having a ball X-D
Gedda suffered very little vocal decline ever. There are videos of him singing just a couple years ago and he still has a great voice.

@ShawDAMAN LOL thanks for sending!
True, he protected his voice well while still sharing it with us plenty!

I got a great laugh from this. rarely do you see a conductor (especially a high profile one like bernstein) hamming it up to that extent ;D
