I still remember the first time i heard this great song in the 60's. I wasnt really into the Beatles but this was the first song that i really loved and is still my favourite from a true legend.
That is the way a REAL Soulmate looks at her man ! No shit! Women like that are as rare as a Blue Diamond ! If you find one You better treasure her like a gift from heaven.
i was born in 1956 and i remember those wonderful years going to the roller skating rink and the dj would play bobby venton and gene pitney..........and i have to say that Gene had the most unique voice that i have ever heard!.....that was a very special time for me...thank you Gene for all of those amazing songs that you gave to us!.......you are a national treasure! RIP!
I was born in the mid-70's and I feel like I'm the only one of my age group who knows of and appreciates Gene Pitney and his music. I sang this song recently at a karaoke bar in a room full of 20-somethings and no one clapped for me when I was finished. Talent is hard to find today and they don't make music like they used to. The world is now plagued by cRAP and Britney Spears(not an artist). Other favorites that have passed on are Harry Nilsson, Roy Orbison, and Gordon Waller to name a few.
Thank God for modern technology eh? Pitney is gone, but we've got his wonderful, wonderful voice. What a singer. You stop whatever you're doing and listen.
One of my 3 favorite singers of the '60's. The other 2? Roy Orbison & Jay Black, lead singer of Jay & the Americans. Still tops with me after all these years.
what a voice. first heard david cassidy's version. then this. all credit to david, but gene's passion really comes through when he sings this. brilliant!
@belladeballe I didn't know he died but I know he had to be getting up there in years. I was a kid when he was in his pique. Thank you so much for sharing.
@PalaverTwist Gene was 65 when he died on tour in England. A young man by today's standards. He died in his sleep, in his hotel bed. I'm not sure but I think it was a heart attack.
@Tedybearman How sad in a way, yet this way for him to go was so apropos. He never was a flamboyant artist like some but one of our more "quiet" ones. It's almost like he just quietly walked out, with no further adieu.
~Well stated Shangfan.....All by himself in his songs and singing ability both then and now. Nobody compares to his emotions that he puts into each song.
I have seen Gene many times during his British tours and have loved his music since the age of nine. My wife also later became a fan. He was a perfectionist and I have seen him use his hands at the start of a show if he thought the sound was wrong. It was all done with a smile but it was obvious that Gene had high standards and it showed in his concerts. Maurice Merry was also an excellent musical director.
@footyone1 That is awesome. How fascinating to be able to directly connect with someone who has been where you've been, my friend and I'm envious. Nah... ;) Not really. I'm just thankful people like you are willing to share your experiences so people like me can, in a sense, "go there". :) Thank you! Naomi
Gene never had a number one hit. He had only himself to blame. His biggest hit went to number 2. Number one hit at the time was "He's A Rebel" . Gene wrote it . Wrote some others like the the Ricky Nelson song "Hello Mary Lou". I met him when i traveled with a band. Could talk music all day. Was uncompromising . His background music in live shows. used mo short cuts though; it cost plenty to have musicians. He was a nice person in a sincere way. I miss him. What a voice! He and Orbison.
Barry Mann and Cythia Weil were married and have written many many hits. including Genes " I'm Going To Be Strong song. Perhaps their biggest was The Rightous Brothers. " You lost that loving Feeling. " Also wrote" On Broadway" another big hit. Many more hits were written. They won many, many music awards and are among the first elected to the music hall of fame. Very talented writers.
A great song sang by a great singer! This song really tells the story of so many guys just trying to make it in life! How hard it is. How important the love of that special lady is!
Barry Mann & Cynthia Weil wrote this masterpiece for Gene's voice, in summer, 65. What a voice, and what times those were. I was 18 y/o, and ready for anything life could throw at me. What memories! Wolfsky9
Two finer signers would be hard to fine but I think Marty Robbin had the could of voice that could 'take you there' and make you part of it. I grew up listening to Gene and I still hear that unique voice of his in my head whenever a song pops up that even faintly resemble one of his. Gene lives on in memory and heart.
Roy Orbison and Gene Pitney in my opinion stand above all singers from the 60's. Their ability to lift you up in a melo dramatic fashion is an art form FEW could do and if they could they fell short of these two mega talents. I miss them both but we have them forever. What a gift they both had and I am thankful they shared it with us!
You are so right about the magic that these two artists could convey with their highly dramatic and emotional vocal delivery Both Gene Pitney and Roy Orbison stand out indeed. I love the way the key goes up in the instrumental break and then the finale "She' s makin' me believe some day......." brings on such a positive and optimistic mood with the triumphant conclusion of this masterpiece, one of many!
There was no one like him. You recognized Gene's voice immediately. He was a true American treasure. My iPod carries all his songs. They are timeless. He is greatly missed, but his music lives on.
I wrote a note to Michael Orland ( idol pianist) to ask Clay Aiken to sing this song. It's been one of my favorites for a long long time and I thought Clay would do it justice. I still wish he would put this song on one of his CDs.
I think my mother was in love with Gene Pitney.. she played all of his songs and sang along with them as she worked around the house.. Mr Pitney always seemed to have so much feeling and emotion in all of his songs.. he was a real talent and we are going to miss him
Brent441, I really enjoy the lyrics that you post along with the music. I remember how I liked to read the lyrics, when they were included on the album covers, as the song played.
Gene - up above, there are so many of us cherishing your work. Clear are the memories traveling thru Connecticut in 65 at 13, and hearing the radio stations belting this song out.... Merrit Parkway revisited.
Fans of the Partridge Family (and aren't we all fans - at least a little) will certainly remember this song. David Cassidy did a great job with it. So did the fellow here.

Listen closely to the soulful, yet totally controlled, pitch-perfect handling of the phrase "I'm a do-nothin' kind of a guy"... I swear, if I'd been in the studio producing this I'd have fainted on the spot.
This is my current favorite as I continue on my Gene Pitney discovery/rediscovery tour. :) It has aged beautifully on all counts: melody, lyrics, arrangement and vocal performance, and as luvut suggested, it's Pitney at his most emotionally powerful. Unfortunate as his split with Burt Bacharach and Hal David was, this song and "I'm Gonna Be Strong" make me think it's an even greater shame he didn't get more material from Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil.
beautiful poetry and full of truth
