all they need to do is be nice to me and cut me a deal if they don't get my order correct and I always tip 20%. Otherwise, I'd have to do some math. Also, when they check for my ID when I am of legal age, that annoys me. I wouldn't have ordered a beer or a glass of wine if I wasn't of age...
Waiters are not salespersons, and also wanting to be a salesperson is not really a good aspiration in my opinion. A businessman shouldn't be a salesperson, they should be someone who finds a product that sells its self.
@TheBighairyfart if i told my manager i'm not salesman i'd probably be fired. suggestive selling is a key to being a good waiter. what I mean by this is that you engage your guests and recommend things like a nice wine to pair with their dinner choice or a popular fresh daily fish that you can upsell to your table. that is how you make money as a waiter and guests appreciate the attention, knowledge, professionalism and charm of a good waiter.
I think the majority of people in the world (and even in the US) would agree that the US culture's "expected" tipping is silly. If a tip which is expected defeats the whole point of rewarding someone for good service.
The real thing going on is that US citizens have a sense of pride and to not tip is now seen as being cheap. You tip because to do otherwise is a sign of financial weakness.
@ImTestingSleeping ahhhh wrong. how about the fact that servers are paid 4.36 and rely on 20% tipping. servers don't work to at restaurants because we hope you'll just love us. sometimes i get such shitty tips i wonder why i don't just get a job at mcdonalds. you pay 20% and you should get an appropriate level of service no matter what. it goes both ways. if service is unsatisfactory then let the waiter and manager know and they will probably comp part of your meal. half the time its the kitchen
@MS3boostin Okay, all true about today's US servers depending on the 20% tipping, but what you aren't realizing is that that is a modern thing. It never used to be like that. There was a time when people tipped only when there was excellent service. Mostly mom and pop type restaurants. Eventually tipping became a culturally expected thing (for the reasons in my first comment) and now corporations are lowering servers wages to account for the tips they are bringing in.
@ImTestingSleeping even if tipping started as a nice gesture by customers it has now become, as you said, expected. I understand some may not like it but it is a known issue before you enter a restaurant so its not like a shock or surprise. if serving didn't have 20% tipping no one would do it anymore. im sure 95% of people would rather do something else than serve. serving is stressful and a grind. i serve bcuz im in college and the time required vs income is the only viable option for me
Sorry I was really under that impression. I was told by waiting staff and bar tenders in a Manhattan bar, but it was 10 years ago. Maybe it has changed? Anyway as I do not live there it is neither here nor there, and 12,5% is better than being stiffed?! But there is an episode of Frasier where he was disappointed that his father could not calculate 12,5% of a bill. I remember because I thought that is an eighth of the total.
@trigga1uk In America waitresses cannot live on what they are paid per shift. For this reason people expect to tip - normally 12.5 percent of the bill. The only reason you would not is if the service was really terrible, or you are a tourist.
@topsyish 12.5%?!!!! I work in a restaurant where i average 600 in sales. at 20% tips all night that equates to aprox $100 (you have to take money off for tip outs, people don't think about that stuff). if i got tipped 12.5%, $600 in sales would mean i get $75 - 18 for tip out (3% of sales) so that means 57$ for the night!!!. i might as well go work 6 hours at a clothing store instead of busting ass all the time for people and their food. thank God some people already realize this. rant over..
Man I finaly found out the name of this show the other day. I remember when I was a kid it use to come on and all I could remember from the show was Newman from Sienfeld and a chick climbing out onto a roof frequently. lol
@davidasullivan1971 - I thought the joke was that the waitress had actually given them their correct drinks to begin with. However (for some reason) Dick didn't know and told the waitress that she was wrong, just so he could take away some of her tip.
If you look closely at the end - it is not just Mary who says her drink tastes funny - because Dick (at 2.35) also has a startled expression on his face, maybe suggesting that there is something wrong with his drink also.
@VoxEMan yes that would have been funny. but dick does order the red wine for himself and white wine for mary, the joke implied at the end is that the waitress did something to their drinks.
I love this scene! My friend and I once went out and had the worst service ever. We left the waitress a one dollar bill in Monopoly money. I think that got the point across.
Remember that she put the wrong wine in front of him and he had to switch them? The waitress did something unpleasant to the wine she thought was his because he was being an asshole.
@Partchio Its thought that if you're mean to a server, they'll "spit" in your food or something. The white wine was set down in front of Dick, so I'm assuming something was done to the white wine. Which ended up in the hands of the lady.
man this was the best show its fucking gay they stoped showing i mean they show all other stupide shows i mean like this is funny show but nooooo they want something new fucking the one they make now days is stupide
all i am saying is this was a awsome show and fuck the tv network for not putting this show on tv no more
Actually, that is a great way to tip. you'd sure get great service that way! SERIOUSLY! I should tip like that lol
And to be honest, when I saw the title of the video, "dick tips", I was thinking of something ENTIRELY different. but I forgot that his name is dick, but gimme a break, I haven't seen the show in almost 10 years lol
I used to wait tables and I hated it! But to tell you the truth, I'm kind of like Dick sometimes when it comes to tipping cause if the server is rude then forget it, lol. This was hilarious
I am going to guess that all the people who left a comment saying that a very funny character's ridiculous actions should be put into practice in real life have never waited tables. I really hope you all are joking.
I don't wait tables anymore but somebody has to do it. Sorry, I guess I didn't make my point clearly. The point that I was trying to make was that there are many servers who do work hard to please their customers and they don't deserve to be degraded and treated poorly. This video is a joke, and a funny one, and it should be treated as just that. I'll get off my soapbox now.
@pornoonsteroids you're a moron of course no one is forcing anyone to wait tables. but its a job that needs staffing and people need jobs. so to say every server should go find other employment is ridiculous.
no one is forcing you to go out to a restaurant and demand service when you can go to a freaking grocery store and pick up food to cook at home or go to McDonalds where they are payed hourly. you get what you pay for when it comes to service. dining out is an experience not just for food
@MS3boostin Oh no trust me I am there just for the food. The only experience I am there for is the experience and enjoyment I am having with the friends and family I am there with at the restaurant. Trust me, the waitress is not part of the experience. Last time I went out to eat I wrote in the tip,"next time don't wear a bra".
@pornoonsteroids i don't mean experience as in the waiter is there to entertain you or to bother you etc. a good waiter is professional, answers questions with a detailed response, takes accurate orders, handles problems with class, is courteous even when his customers may be down right disrespectful, and assures the pace of the meal occurs in a timely fashion. that is what all servers should be able to accomplish. if not they are not fulfilling their duties and should not expect 20%.
This really should be adopted. By knowing the amount you will spend on your meal beforehand, you can calculate the 15% average tip and reveal this number to the waiter/waitress, and let him/her earn her money instead of just getting it. There's this waitress at a restaurant down the street from me, who is the worst waitress I've ever encountered. No personality at all, doesn't offer to refill drinks or anything. Should she get a tip just because? I know that's her income, but still...
Ever sinse I first saw this, I have said that is the way we should all tip!! lol I do, Not exactly the way he does it, but, I tip accordingly to their service, not that 15% crap!!
I used to be a waitress and I only wished that someone like Dick Solomon would have sat in my section so I could have waited on him and then dropped his food on the floor, lol. I love Dick Solomon!!!!
