I have to agree with you with the fact that Beckham arguably was never THE best player of each of his teams, but you cannot deny that he was one of the most important players of all teams he has played for. His assists record alone speaks for itself. It also says a lot when he can be 'surplus to requirements' at a team like Real Madrid but yet fight his way back into the 1st team XI and then become a key component in them winning their league title.
