@TheRealThreeP Hippies are pacifists, I'm not. So hurry up and die you son of a whore. Also what do you find honorable about making animals suffer in pain that if were inflicted on you, would cause you to scream for your mother like the little bitch you are? You are just shit like the rest of Humanity, excluding ALF as they are the only Humans I have any respect for.
These dumb fucks are out of hand. When you break into a research lab on a university, 9 times out of 10 its probably a practica done by a student trying to get his/her Masters. Some of these experiments could have been 2 years long, costing thousands of dollars per semester and when its destroyed by some nut job the student has to start all over again. There's little compensation and the student has to spend thousands of dollars again and 2 more years of their life. Fuck these people.
@Pommit Its simple, these people are fucking with the livelihood of students who have been working their asses off to get where they are. They're not only harming major companies when they do these things. Many students are in internships with these companies or are working on their Masters in the university labs and when these people come in and trash everything they pretty much destroy two plus years of work and paid tuition. So again I say, fuck these people.
@raventakayama - I think you have missed the point. These people know they are harming major companies and know they may be adversely affecting the livelihood of some people - but companies and people who are involved in the industry of mistreating and causing suffering to animals. The activists are completely against the work that is done where it involves using animals, if work has to be stopped or ruined because it involves animals then it is understandable what they do.
@Pommit Understandable? Hardly... A guy who works his way through college and grad school shouldn't have his hard work derailed by some cowardly nut jobs in masks. At Penn state a group like this went into their labs and trashed all of the chemistry experiments. They released some animals, but the experiments that were smashed has nothing to do with animal experimentation. They just destroyed everything that was on the same floor. Who are they to tell anyone what career field to study?
@raventakayama - Ok, hypothetical situation...You have a company that experiments on dogs (chimps, cats, etc.) in order to test some drug. From the position of those who are anti-vivisection and testing on animals, their moral position is such that what is being done is wrong and must be stopped. It is legal, but someone has to stop it because animals are suffering. So they go in and take the animals. All good stuff. Now given their moral position, the work undertaken should be...
@raventakayama ...destroyed. Why? Because those who have such a moral position would find it immoral that such work or the results of such work should be allowed to continue or be used when it is being undertaken on the back of animal suffering. Moreover, it also serves to highlight to those undertaking the work that what they are doing is wrong and cannot continue. In answer to your question, about a career, I'd answer with 'why should anyone think they are justified in causing suffering'?
@Pommit The world has always worked on the sacrifices of some for the benefit of many. People don't stop to consider what many of these experiments are used for and MOST of what you see in those "undercover" vids don't apply to present day experiments. Prior to the early 90s there were no animal rights to cover experimentation. Many animal experiments aren't even harmful or invasive. These people are indiscriminately targeting facilities that use animals without knowledge of how they're used.
@raventakayama - Were PEOPLE to consent to make sacrifices for the good of many there would be no issue. Animals. however, do not consent and humans do not have an adequate justification from an non-'speciest' moral standpoint to make use of animals. I agree that we don't have the justification to make use of animals for the betterment of human health, as it is at the expenses of the animals freedom and welfare. Any use of animals that causes even minimal suffering is immoral.
@Pommit Morality is relative. Some people think that ignoring a man who wants to walk again is immoral. And plenty of advancements have happened due to the non-consensual sacrifices of humans as well. We're not going to agree on this, and its probably because of my involvement in the field of science. I have admitted that if its invasive experiments it is in fact an evil. But considering how the data is used it may be a necessary evil. That's my inside perspective on this issue.
@raventakayama -Yes, morality is relative but the moral disagreement we have may be due to you have a speciesist outlook, i.e. seeing humans as more worthy than animals. Plenty of advancements have occurred through non-consensual sacrifices, but was the treatment/use/involvement of such people a moral act? There are circumstances where such use of animals could be justified, but I cannot think of any that would pass 'the test' unless the human race being under threat from some pathogen.
@Pommit The hard fact about the development of science is that much of it was produced with zero regard for morality. Now-ah-days that has changed, but you're not going to get a pro-Animal argument from me when it comes to nerve reconstruction for the betterment of humans (animals to). This field isn't for everyone, and you have to understand that in the VAST majority of animal experimentation the animals aren't harmed. Now using animals for cosmetics is ridiculous but that's different.
@raventakayama - That's right about what you say on morality. But moral positions are changing in society (western society, more precisely) in that there is greater consideration for the welfare of animals and diminishment of the attitude that what is living but not human affords the creature a vastly different degree of worth. Non-humans are seen as greatly inferior. I don't understand what you say about the field is not for everyone, can you please explain? I am not so much interested...
@Pommit The field isn't for everyone because science often crosses the line of morality and ethics. There are watch dog (no pun) groups within the scientific community that tries its best to make sure the animals are treated as good as they possibly can. All experimentation isn't vivi or drug testing. I was part of an experiment that tested the psychological differences between male chimps and female chimps by giving them tests of fairness. I'll explain.....
@raventakayama - in the matter of harm, as generally about making using animals as a resource. Can you maybe explain some uses of animals that you are comfortable with. Maybe there are things that I have not considered and ought to.
@Pommit cont Chimps have a particular gene that we also have that is suspected of being the fairness gene. That means this gene codes for the impulses that allow us to determine what's fair and what isn't Its why some people speak up about unfairness and some don't (speculation). We gave a male chimp an apple slice and the other male chimp a grape. Both ate them without hesitation. We did the same for two females and the female with the apple threw her apple away. They prefer grapes to apples.
@Pommit The point of the experiment was to show the hyperactivity of this so-called fairness gene in females. It boils down to which gender is genetically wired to be jealous. This helps us understand the psyche of not only the chimps but humans as well on a genetic level. The animals we kept healthy and when it was more chimps than the facility could handle they were moved to a preserve. The chimps weren't harmed, and they were cared for. Not all experimentation is invasive or harmful.
@raventakayama - I appreciate that the information gained from such use of chimps WOULD be useful to understanding our psyche. But that is not a good enough justification to use animals in such a way. There isn't a necessity that demands that animals must be used in this way (far from it) and this is not an instance where they used for our survival. The morality of the matter does not hinge on harm or invasiveness, but use of animals as a resource and what that involves.
@Pomm Well think about it. In the experiment I told you about the animals weren't harmed and they were well taken care of. On top of that the experiment was only phase one of a process that could take 10 plus years to finish. Science isn't fast or efficient. The overall goal of such an experiment would be to the development of stress relieving techniques and medication that specifically target genetically induced depression, violent tendency (anger management), fear and so on. It has benefits.
@raventakayama - I don't doubt it may have benefits for people at all. I completely understand and believe what you say about the animals not coming to harm. I am trying to convey that I see it as morally wrong that animals are used as a resource for our benefit. I don't believe that is moral. We would only use humans who offered themselves as a resource. Just because animals can't make a decision doesn't excuse their use.
@Pommit I understand the notion of animals not having the ability to consent, but that goes for any usage of animals, pets included. Also if we took that moral standpoint we'd be bad off. Many of the world's deadliest diseases were virtually eradicated using animal experimentation. The microbial world is a much smaller threat because of those experiments and I'm sure I wouldn't want it any other way.
@raventakayama -Owning pets where the animal is not domesticated and is contained in an alien environment is immoral wrong. And yes, we would be worse off in many respects. Although there are cases where testing would be justified. If thousands of people are afflicted by a disease then I think that testing on a small number of animals (were they not harmed) could be justified. But this is the exception. Too much testing is done without the interests of the animals taken into consideration.
@Pommit I'm not arguing against that. Lots of animal research is bullshit. The problem is that these people label ALL forms of animal research as needless, useless or unnecessary. That simply isn't right. So when these scientifically uneducated people destroy someone's research its stupid. What do they actually know and why should their personal feelings about animal experimentation or research outweigh the necessity of said experimentation?
