  • Strange at these comments and royalties and that they made money because I saw them on Howard Stern about 10 years ago and they said they never got a dime off of Nat's success with this song. I hope that they did but if my memory is correct, that's what I remember them saying.

  • The original and the best. Forget Natalie, Ednaswap rules

  • Booth versions are great

  • Who the hell first realised this song could be improved (for the pop market) so much? This version is NOT that great a song.

  • @wikichris I love this version. Her voice is great and doesnt sound whinny like Natalies.

  • credit to the original writer. but pop version def sounded better. but respect. im from 2012 btw. just knew this >_<

  • I worked w/Anne's sister at the time & for her label & when asked how she felt about the Natalie cover she said something to the effect of "Its going to pay for everything I could ever want, who cares, I can write another song" & she has written many for Katy Perry, Madonna, Miley Cyrus, Demi Lovato, Jordin Sparks, Miranda Cosgrove & a bunch of others, so I think Natalie covering her song actually opened up an entire songwriting career for her that has been quite lucrative

  • @goofygirl291 never knew that. At least Ednaswap was happy bout the cover. Thanks for the info

  • ew. POP IS BETTER <3

  • Me encanta lo original.

  • I actually really like the original version :) I heard Natalie Imbruglia's first and I much prefer it. I think that the original actually sounds like a cover. It feels like the song was written for Natalie Imbruglia. But I do really like the original. I don't see the reason for original V cover wars. They're both amazing.

  • Like them a lot!

  • Where can i download this verson please ?

  • @Izanagioomikami version*

  • this is not the real songwriters 1999 was not this made trine reine made this in 1993 so how this is a the orginal

  • And besides, who wants to listen to a band called Ednaswap?! x

  • "before it was taken from them" doesn't necessarily mean "money taken from them" You don't hear much about them being the original artists, or getting credit for their creative work, regardless of what money may have been made off it, there is a great deal of value in being recognized for your work.

  • This is the worst cover of Natalie Imbuglia I have ever heard! If you are going to do a song at least pay homage to the original in some respects.

  • @psmith182

This is the original. If you had paid any attention to the title and/or the description you would have seen that.

  • @psmith182 Ur kidding right? Natalie sings their cover! Not to mention, she sings it like a happy little pop song! Anne sings it with feelings!

  • @tony172433 It's a person's own opinion. She covered it and money that Natalie made from it also went to the original artist. I had never even heard of this band before I learnt that torn was their original song and it inspired me to look at it, thus making them known more. I personally prefer Natalie's person and I think she sang it with a lot of feeling, they just have different styles.

  • It's interesting and they have the merit of being the original artist but I'm glad Natalie did her version. I like it better.

  • Ednaswap actually recorded 3 versions of "Torn" - one version on each of their first 3 albums. This is the last version. The first version sounds much closer to Imbruglia's cover because the song was actually co-written by Phil Thornalley (who wasn't part of Ednaswap) - who was actually Imbruglia's producer.

Scott Cutler & Anne Preven did make some money on the song but as much as you would imagine because Thornalley had already given the recording rights to BMG - as was his right.

  • @altroval Didn't they do four versions? One on their self-titled album. Then one on the "Chicken" EP, one on "Wacko Magneto" (which was basically a remix of the "Chicken" EP version) and later a "Radio Mix" on the "Back On The Sun" single.

  • this version sucks, I'm sorry its bad. Too forced.

  • @lulu4ever2 this cant be bad.. this is the original version...

  • You can"t take a song from it's writer you have to buy it from them. Anne has made a very good living writing for madonna,Beyonce and Miley Cirus to name afew..... Trust me she's a wealthy lady. won numerous grammy's even nominated for an oscar..... But I do like this version better.

  • @jes0390 But Ednawap never actully owned "Torn", exclusively. They co-owned it with Phil Thornalley who co-worte the song with Preven and Scott Cutler. And Phil Thornalley gave BMG the rights to use the song in return for producing Imbruglia's LP.

But while the band didn't make money on "Torn", itself, it did establish Scott Cutler and Anne Preven as songwriters and they have done very well collaborating since Ednaswap's demise in 1999.

  • "Before it was taken from them"... oh dear, sounds like somebody doesn't grasp the concept of Royalties, and how an unheard-of song can make its unheard-of writer very rich overnight thanks to them.

  • @AERmusic Agreed!!I wish a big star would take one of my songs!!!

  • Comment removed

  • @AERmusic the point the uploader is making is most people don't recognize the original artist. Royalties aside, when you here Natalies version on the radio they never say its a cover. Natalie kick started her career on this song and most people still think she wrote it. So, I understand exactly how the uploader feels

  • This is no where near as good as Natalie Imbruglia's version I'm afraid!

  • @jambotherhino Shits all over that horrid version, I'm 'fraid.

  • the original by definition is always superior to any and all covers.

  • @pobtrons hahah no

  • LOL both versions are shitty LOL

  • Ah, this is the 90s I remember

  • I think the best way to put it is that this is a much more mature song.

If you think natalie imbruglia's poppy bullcrap is any good then you probably also think mcdonalds makes a great burger, wallmart has a great product selection, and the best cars in the world are made in America.

  • @Dogmatix2 Yes philistines! You probably think all sparkling wines are champagne, and that sevruga caviar is better than beluga! Why can't you learn to be a snob like Dogmatix and I?!

  • @readman1223 So not liking McDonalds, Wallmart and MOPAR makes me a snob? Fair enough, I am a snob, and I only care about material things. Tell you what though, I bet my music collection is way cooler than yours.

lol, do you know what a fallacy is? It means your a fucking idiot.

  • @Dogmatix2 you forgot "that Dogmatix2 had anything relevant to say" Need some cheese with that whine.

  • Oh my God.... I must say I'm a HUGE Natalie Imbruglia Fan... I mean HUGE... and I must admit THIS IS DAMN GOOD!! WAY BETTER than Imbruglia's cover. Luckily I have my Natalie Favs and this is not one of them... I do like the ones she actually wrote :)

  • The version from their first album was better... and the one that was overproduced and pop-ified by Natalie.

  • saw them in concert in the 90s love them so much! i wish we could see more!

  • Why do these 'rock' bands have to rip off classics like Torn, I bet Natalie Imbruglia is angry.

  • @henryjimdix *Facepalm*

  • @Milodiablo Sigh

  • @henryjimdix Ednaswap was before Natalie Imbruglia. I'm not sure if you Really knew that or not. That's why for my comment, I did *Facepalm*.

  • @Milodiablo Don't worry - I did know that for the record, just wanted to wind up the typical retarded youtube user and I'm afraid you have just fallen into that trap. It's ok, you may be a bit of a retard but you will grow up.

  • Comment removed

  • @henryjimdix I'll never understand why people like you enjoy trolling, in an effort to make yourself feel better to inflate you're Ego. Maybe you have low self-esteem and need to do so to make yourself feel better about you're horrible life to have some sort of purpose. Leeching on negativity to gain self satisfaction causes nothing but hurt to a human being. This will be my last comment to you, For in the end truly you will never get anything in return but causing others pain and misery.

  • @Milodiablo touch a nerve did I kid? Does the truth hurt?

  • @henryjimdix get your facts straight Natalie copied them

  • @dedurant317 Sigh

  • @dedurant317 Don't worry, he is a fucking troll. I hope to the existence he gets the Fuck beat out of him.

  • Both songs are great. Songs get covered all the time, why are you getting so worked up about it? If Anne didn't want it covered she/the band wouldn't have given her permission to do it.

  • I had thought Natalie Imbruglia's version was produced by one of the co-writers of the song... lemme check... yup. Phil Thornalley, who co-wrote the song with Preven and Cutler, produced Imbruglia's version of the song (along with some other songs on her debut album).

  • Nobody "takes " a song without permission.

Obviously, someone in this group can write great songs but they need an arranger

or producer who can see what Natalie"s people saw.

  • I always thought the Natalie version was totally good, back in the day, but after hearing this version and the pain and anger and heartache in Anne's voice, realizing that this is HER song, its almost hard to go back to Natalie's. Its too pretty and poppy and even happy for the real emotions of the song as it was intended to be. (I still like Natalie's version though).

  • Ednaswap YES! I like both versions of it but the original is always better.

  • The first time I ever heard this version, was on The History Of New Music on Edge 102.1 radio station in Toronto. I loved it instantly! Geez do I miss that radio show!! :)

  • @TheSmittenKitten007 thats where i heard it too...i think the shows host died..

  • By The Way Anne did not care very much that Natalie did her song. She made hundreds of thousands of dollars off of it and was put on the songwriting map which she has turned into a huge Oscar nominated songwriting career for Artists like Madonna, Miley Cyrus, BEyonce, Sinead O' Connor.

  • this 1 sounds liek the covar

  • Not a fan of the production of this...specifically the delay/echo on her vocals.

  • Comment removed

  • @TanvirKaykobad Throw some headphones on... its there.

  • so natalie got famous from covering this song huh

  • Who cares Natalie is hotter. Banal song anyway.

  • Wauw this version is by far the best

  • lol at "before this song was taken from them," pop stars cover songs all the time and Ednaswap probably make a lot of money due to it.

  • @AskariNari

it depends if tehy legally sold it or if it was taken from them

  • This screams 90's to me more than Natalie's version :)

  • you don't need to dog out on natalie! she was given this song! and to tell you the truth i like her version much more... but each to their own! im not gonna winge and complain because i like hers more then say these guys suck! that's just rude!!!!!

  • Also, there are TWO Ednaswap versions of this song, one faster, one slower. This is the slower one, off the "Wacko Magneto" album. The faster (my fave) version is on their self-titled (and fucking amazing!) album.

  • Natalie Imbruglia sucks. Her voice is flat and emotionless. This IS Anne Preven's song! Her emotion and rawness is what makes this the amazing song that it is! I understand that covers are legally allowed, but Natalie didn't cover it, she massacred it! EDNASWAP RULES!

  • This song wasn't TAKEN from them, it was simply covered. Which is allowed.

  • This is the original song people :)

Natalie's version is a cover, and her song gets more popular than this group.

  • this is so much better then that stupid natalie imbruglia..

  • i kinda like this better to be honest

theres more emotion in it and i think the lyrics kinda need that

that said, i think natalie's version of it is really good too

  • WOW does this kick the crap out of the cover...

  • it gets really good round 2:00

  • TAB PLZZ!!! solo guitar tab link plz!

  • carla azars in a better band now ;D AUTOLUX

  • I didn't know that it was a cover. I like Natalia Imbruglia's version but this one is so much better.

  • Amazing song and voice ,brilliant!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I like this version better, more raw...

  • Man, I really like this one. I think it's better.

  • imbruglia , yeah she was the real thing,,disapeared up her own arse....at least these guys are playin it.....would the world have ever noticed imbruglia, without her cover of this song...the trine rein version has more soul and feel,,,,,,imbruglia's just another chick for suckers.....

  • @maxziz Two words... Jonny English....

  • @chasingfasterxX ----eerrrhhhhh yeah mate

  • The version that NI covered was on Ednaswap's first CD, the now out of print 'Ednaswap'. I like Ednaswap's version of that version better that Nat'lie's, but the version in this video is my favorite of them all! I love Anne's singing, especially when she lets her voice get as raw and raspy as it does here!

  • Natalie Imbruglia's version just sounds like Trine Rein's version

  • This version is crap. Wannabee stars on too much weed or booze wasting a good song. If that's your number, then fine, but it's not mine.

Imbruglia turned it into a hit because her version grasped the feeling of the original lyrics, punched deep into the emotion that they expressed. Ednaswap didn't do that.

That's why there are 700,000 views of Imbruglias and 60,000 of this shit.

If you're into head-banging, poor production, "powerful" music, fine, great, good for you doing your thing.

  • I love this verision and have been looking for it on here forever. As far as im concered its the only one worth listening to. love it.

  • if only they had been able to give this song the punch that natalie did maybe they would have become more then a has been hack band

  • this just may be the most beautiful thing I've ever heard.

  • It's a beautifully written song, and this version is good and has a good edge to it but Imbruglia's version was just one of the ultimate pop songs. As a songwriter surely the biggest compliment to your talent is that someone can take your words and portray them in so many ways that please so many different people

  • This version is sooooooooo much better!

  • So f*cking funny, to see a guy whine about a "stolen song. Defending this artist. The song origin from a danish singer, Lis Sørense - Brændt. Later it got translated to english, by this band!...

Wtop whining about stolen songs. Somtetimes covers are better.

    This is not the original.....

  • @CaspeSort

    No, you have it backwards.

    From Wikipedia:

"Torn was written by Scott Cutler, Anne Preven, and Phil Thornalley during a demo session in 1993 before Edna Swap was formed. The lyrics were written by Preven. Thornalley and Cutler produced the session. In 1997, it was covered famously by Natalie Imbruglia after having been recorded by Scandinavian singers Lis Sørensen in 1993, and Trine Rein in 1996."

This is the original. Lis Sørensen was a cover.

  • @DavidRavenMoon you dont know shit fag!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @Illadephroots

    Very intelligent retort.

Hey, I never even heard of this band, or the other artist, but that's the facts.

    I do like Natalie's version.

  • @DavidRavenMoon You are absolutely right!.. Sorry :)

  • Before anyone says something stupid again, just read the story of the song in wikipedia (couldn't post the link, search for "Torn (Ednaswap song)")

  • Boo hoo. Somebody covered a song! Oh the tragedy! Oh the horror! Oh the pain! HOW DARE SOMEBODY COVER A SONG!

  • who cares who wrtoe the original- this song uses a I V vi IV progression which to be honest has been done to death by hundreds of artists, basically recyling the same song- Journey- Dont stop Believing, U2 --WIth or WIthout You, James Blunt- YOur Beutfiful, A-HA- take on me, Bic Runga- Sway, Black Eyes peas- where is the love, amongst many many more, making this song completly un-original, sure ur bound to have a hit song if u rip off a melody that has been succesful contless times before

  • "taken from them" lol.

    WHY U MAD THO?

Cover versions happen all the time. Nothing wrong with that. Natalie's got more attention, rightfully, cause it's a better version.

  • Theres a difference between this song and Natalie Imbruglias version. This song sounds like its coming straight from the girls mouth, then the music was added. They gave Natalie Imbruglia the words, and told her. Here's the words, now sing to the music. No, this chick is singing it from the experience of it, in some seedy bar with some dudes drunk at the bar, and some guys in the corner playing darts. Some dudes are shooting pool. Rack em' up!

  • This is the finest rendition of Torn. It has far more emotion and depth and maintains its relevance and power. Love it!

  • I never thought I would feel like this, because I almost fell in love with Natalie and love her song, Today is the first time I am hearing this version and this rocks. This "is the original" in the sense this captures the mood of the song, Natalies is better but its a commercial version, she could sing any song anyway and it would sound good.. This version rocks

  • "Taken from them"? I agree that a cover two years after the original is a bit, well, Not Done, but it's not exactly theft, is it? It can even be argued that it was a *good* thing for Ednaswap, because it gave a short-lived, easily overlooked band a place in pop culture that they would have otherwise lacked. Not saying that this justifies a slightly tactless cover, just an observation that the band weren't exactly *worse* for it.

  • unfortunately i got roped in by imbruglia's version of this in the 90s, but now that i've discovered this...oh my! this version "bleeds" more. i like it a lot :)

  • The guitar play is brilliant.....in my opinion.the song is good in the beginning..it gets a little bad in the middle but then picks up well and ends well too.....all credit to them for this song...natalies is good...but theirs is the original...

  • While I do agree that Ednaswap (and the co-writers) should have received more credit for the later success of their song, I have to say that the Imbruglia cover is much more refined and well-executed, along with complex instrumentation that blends soft rock and dance beats. This created a version that more people would find appealing.

Nonetheless, it's petty of Ednaswap to feel cheated of big label backing. Labels are profit machines, not charity organizations.

  • i miss my auburn music buddy

  • This version sucks horribly...no wonder why they used Natalie's....so far superior. This version made my ears bleed.

  • Honest and powerful.

  • Best version by a mile.

  • It's slow, boring, and folky - the kind of

"song" that a fool writes in 5 minutes on

a couch! The Who/Stones power chords don't help. Go somewhere in your "mind" and

start over, i.e. don't turn out half baked music.

  • So much better than the Natalie Imbruglia version of this song.

  • @Raminator5651 naw i like the other one better- but that might just be because i grew up knowing her version thinking she made it. But i do like this version too

  • Anne is a criminally under appreciated artist. Really great singer and lyricist. Real gravitas. One thing contemporary music could use is more Anne Previns and fewer Carrie Underwoods.

  • I saw Ednaswap perform this song at the Troubadour in LA, before the Natalie ever recorded it. Anne Preven ROCKS! Imbruglia is good but she's kiddy pop in comparison. Anne's performance live is RAW and honest!

  • I wonder what Natalie's voice actually sounds like...she's another marketed versions of a "singer." This is music! Love it!

  • I really, really miss rock of this brand/caliber. More like this OK!!?

  • I love Natalie Imbruglia's version a lot, but I also like this one. I do prefer Natalie Imruglia's version though. This one is a bit more...rough and open, wheras Natalie's is more composed.

  • @indiemelon i agree (not that anyone cares what i think, haha)

  • @indiemelon Imbruglia's version was a note for note copy of the Trine Rein version.

  • @indiemelon ... oh please, Natalie Imbruglia's version was CHEERFUL and this song is anything but.... I thought Natalie's version was a commercial sell out that SUCKED huge. Ah, but where is she now but maybe the 90s circuit singing her one hit wonder?

  • @soma90405 Not every singer is going to be eternally famous and successful. She hasn't had an album out for a few years, but when she did they were good.

I like the original as well, I just prefer Natalie Imbruglia's better because I prefer her style in singing.

  • It's also unusual to find folks with the musical ability to play in counterpoint.

  • Natalie's is more polished, but this is more evocative

  • I used to absolutely adore natalies cover until I finally heard the original, and it just makes her sound like a kids bop version of this girl. I love this song to death.

  • Since hardly anybody else seems to have commented, I'd also like to say that I thought this video suited the song extremely well.

  • i love it

  • @Monscherri: Completely agree. I like Imbruglia's version better, but that's just me. Her version is one of the oh so little number of covers I think are worthy enough. The vast majority of covers are terrible. It's kind of like hearing Christmas songs. It only needs to be recorded once not a million times.

  • this is such a beautiful song. i've always loved natalie's version, it's more my style. but i love the song overall.

  • This version turns you inside out - Natalie Imbruglia's cover is the sort of music you hear in elevators.

People without souls feel safer in elevators.

  • I agree. In my opinion, this version is lively, quite full of feeling.

  • Very, very good!! I've already loved the imbruglia version but this is really good, too! It's a pity the song didn't work out for them because it's a good song..

  • Well it depends on your definition of 'working out' because they would have gotten an awful lot of cash from the sales of 'Torn' thanks to their writing credit. Good songs have a funny way of always getting out there somehow.

  • I know it's a matter of taste, but this is the typical instance in which elitist assholes will dislike the cover just because it got more popular and they immediately dislike anything mainstream.

They'll never accept that Annie Lennox's No More I Love You's is better than The Lover Speaks', Whitney's I Will Always Love You is better than Dolly Parton's, Sinead's Nothing Compares 2 U is better than The Family's and Natalie Imbruglia's Torn is better than this one, end of story.

  • Why would you say it's a matter of taste and then say Natalie Imbrulia's watered down pop tart version of this song is better, "End of story?

It's a matter of authenticity, and Natalie Imbrulia's version doesn't even come close to the original...maybe her version is more palatable, but if she had one ounce of originality, then maybe she wouldn't have been just another one hit wonder.

  • Natalie Imbruglia is a one hit wonder only in the United States so do me a favor and get your facts straight before running your mouth.

I'll accept your reasoning that the original is better as long as it's not influenced by what's mainstream and what isn't, that only makes you a pretentious elitist which is pretty clear that you are, so thanks for proving my point.

  • running my mouth off? lol

Wow...you're very defensive when it comes Natalie Imbrulia :P

I've got nothing against mainstream music. I just know what I like, and I was so fucking BORED by her version...the point is that it doesn't convey the raw emotion that this original version does.

Now do me a favor and go take your meds Mmk?

  • I guess I should apologize for not thinking the world ends in the USA and that if an artist is a one hit wonder there, he automatically is a one hit wonder everywhere.

And I was so fucking bored with this version, she sounds like she got drunk and then went into the studio to record this, you only think Imbruglia's is boring cause it's commercial and mainstream, stop trying to deny the obvious.

  • I disagree that it was "taken from them". They had given it a good run and had come to no success with this version, and allowed other artists to cover it.

Also, while I quite like version, I don't think this version would ever have been palatable for the general public to have allowed it to match Imbruglia's success with the song.

  • Rusty Anderson rocks!

  • This song "Torn" was a HUGE hit for Lis Sørensen. A Danish pop star since the 1970´s under the name "Brændt" all the way back in 1994:-)

Check the recorded version of it out here on You Tube:-)

I love her version, even though it´s in Danish.

  • Also, 'taken'? I'm sure they got their fair deal of royalties for that cover and I'm sure that if they didn't want to they could just say 'No, you can't cover us, write your own.' but that would mean they miss in on a lot of cash.

    Love the lyrics though.

  • I like this version so much better after a few times I listened to it. It sounds so raw and more emotion plus u cant go wrong with a sick grungy guitar that kicks in.

  • I like Natalie Imbruglia's version better, but then it's normal to prefer what you heard first.

    Here's why:

If there are two versions of a song, and you hear the version you like better first, you'll remember it, and if you hear the other version it will sound inferior.

But if you hear the other version first, you won't like it as much, which means you won't seek out any other versions, which means you'll never have a chance to say you found a second version you liked better!

    Q.E.D!

  • Nicely concluded! But I believe, you overlooked something: Often one of the versions is commercially more successful, as in this case. The more successful version is more successful since it appeals to more listeners (trivial, but:). It does not matter, whether this is the original version or a cover. However, you are much more _likely_ to hear this version first, since it is broadcasted more. This is a positive feedback loop.

  • That is so true, as "each to their own" applies to what you're saying...but just don't forget that this is the original version! :))

  • I heard imbruglia's first and I like this one better. Just sayin

  • NOT true at all. There are many songs people have heard first by someone and not like it until someone else does it.

It all comes down to taste not order of listening.

  • Ednaswap came as close to the bigtime as is possible without actually making it.

  • well that's mi point too .. im in that situation i and feel more related with the other version.

This could go on forever so I think that .. at the end.. every person have a different taste // another example that the original version is not better than the cover is tatu with how soon is now

  • People always say that the original version is better... but in mi opinion, in this case, natalie's version is better because she sings with frustration and charm at the same time..

  • There is no way on earth or any other planet that Natalie sung this better than Anne. When you listen to this song, you feel what she's singing about. She is torn. Anyone who's been in that situation can relate to this version of the song.
