So many great lines in this song... bitter sweet in a way. Such beautiful melodies too. Pity this album didn't get as much attention as it deserved... still, some of us hold it dear.
on a sad note, some parts of this song are haunting as they make me think of paul hester's death. lines such as " the birds come back to the park to talk " and " highest branch on the apple tree was my favourite place to be " and the chorus remind me of it as paul died in a park and he had spent a lot of time in the park before he killed himself and it makes me wonder what went through his mind. so i feel like crying when i hear this song, but it is a brilliant song too.
The bass is awesome!! Specially in the outro part, at the end of the song. Crowded House is such an incredible and versatile band. The final part isis an incredible piece of progessive rock. the sound menisd me a bot of Depeche Mode at their best times. And the Lyrics... cheers!!
Amazing song from an amazing band, one of my favourites ever.
I was only fourteen when this concert took place and I lived too far away from Australia at that time (I still do) but I would have loved to share such a magic moment with so many people. I get goosebumps whenever I watch these videos.
Thank God I got to see them live in 2008 and they were great, perfect, just as usual. I missed Paul, though.
I can tell Aaron when i listen to your music...Neil is a great songwriter, the split between the brothers going solo was the best thing that could have happened to them...
Something richer always flows out of that..Although Split Enz always brings back good memories too!!...
I love it when Neil says "the birds talk to me if I get down on my knees" He is such the bomb as a songwriter. It's like, where did he get that from.. deep!
I see the poster of this clip has also posted the Jools Holland show one. That was indeed a great session, especially the appearance of the Maori band at the end.
wow... looking at the comment of those saying they just seen them recently really is a great thing to hear. I thought they had disappeared. These guys are extremely talented. I adore their music. :D
I saw them in Manchester about 20 to 15 years ago at GMEX. When they played this they had a whole Maori band of drummers that were revealed as the song went on Awesome!!!!!
Yeh I saw them in Manchester a couple of months ago for the first time ever, they were even better than I expected, just bought tickets to see them in Liverpool in the summer.
Saw them signing this on the Jools Holland show and towards the end a Maiori band appeared - tremendous. Thank God (or maybe Neil Finn?) Crowded House have reformed.
I cannot WAIT for their tour. I wouldn't miss seeing these guys for the world. I've listened to them from the day I was born and I always will, and one thing I've always wanted is to see them live. Without Paul it will be different but it will still be them.
Great track, I've just bought the Farewell to the World Cd recorded at the Sydney Opera House in 1996 from Amazon and this track and Fingers of love really make the hairs on the back of the neck stand up, terrific guitar solos. They were brilliant on Jools Hollands program on the BBC also. They don't make em like that anymore.
Great find. I remember this concert - I still have my shirt. The Opera House forecourt was crowded so much people were sitting all around Circular Quay listening. A night I will never forget.
I was lucky enough to be in Sydney working when this concert was given - the farewell act for the group. I made a recording of the TV broadcast as it was a charuty event. Over 100,000 wonderful people - not a fight in the crowd. I was so happy to be there. Gave the recording to my family for Zmas that year - we are all Split Enz and Croweded House fans!
I saw the Finn brothers here a few years ago at HOB in New Orleans....
Wow. Thank you for posting this. This is one of my favorite CH/Neil Finn songs. I'll never forget when Neil Finn played here in Portland, Oregon. He did a short pre-show gig at a local record store. The place was packed, but I was lucky to be right up front. Neil asked if anyone had a request. I shouted out "Private Universe", and he said, "I think I can do that one." At that moment in time, life was perfect.
another awesome song, good thing I was around to grow up with CH, I'm 18 and just love these guys, come on-one live night at burswood dome in perth-please....Mitch and Laura.
thanks for posting the vid aswell mate, much appreciated..
