The Mustang is likely a '71 Sportsroof . That body style ran from '71 to '73. The '73 front bumper was slightly different. The '73's also had chrome trim around the tail lights. This one's trim is black making it either a '71 or ' 72. The '72's had "Mustang" in a script styling over the right tail light missing from this car. The '71's had either block letters or a block decal running across the deck lip. Best guess on the engine would be 351-4V, probably not a 429.
Everybody knows that they fitted the cars with Midas mufflers and super-soft compound tires. Coincidentally, on the day of shooting, the actors had laryngitis.
Unless that Buick is a GSX, I dont see it being capable of keeping up with that Mustang. They are beating the snot out of these cars. I dont see the new cars of today being able to take that kind of treatment.
@YeshuaHamashiach777 Yeah you right. Very right. Its some aerodynamic nonsense they are doling out these days, and the shapes keep getting worse with each passing year, not to mention today's "cars" are tin-boxes on the road. What will today's tin-boxes perform compared to these sturdy cars ? Absolutely nothing. Those were the days, those were the cars !! Sigh !!
@YeshuaHamashiach777 No i can tell u dat Buicks not a GSX or it would Blow dat Stang away instantly.....Looking at it its godda be a Skylark which is same Car as GSX but it doesnt have da Big Engine n it's 4 doors instead of 2...Looking at botha dose Cars dey both r too slow ta have Big Blocks so dere no Bigger den Prolly 350's in either one of dem but prolly Smaller den dat.
@YeshuaHamashiach777 The Buick is a 68 Special Deluxe (poor man's Skylark). The exhaust pipe is on the passenger side, which indicates that it has the 230hp 350 V8. I don't know or care about mustangs, so someone else would have to attest to how that car is equipped, but it looks like about a 73, by which point hp in all cars had been severely decreased, so it is most likely packing less than 200hp. As a proud 68 Skylark owner for the past 10 years, I can attest that the Buick could keep up!
'petje72' just want to tell you 'thank you' you really turned me on to some good' 70s and 80s movies me and my family really have enjoyed once there found just want to say thank you!!!!!!!!!!! and yes a bunch is hard to find.
Cool. Now I know the movie they used for that Geico commercial.

in real this Mustang wouldn't have any chance with GS, because GS had over 350 engine.
There's mistake in the scenes:
4:04 - Buick hasn't any headlights, 4:11 - they magically appear.

Haha, right, so funny to see people mistake movies for documentaries.

That's either a Mach-1 or a boss mustang. Maybe the winser 302 or it could be a 289.

Also, at 1:12, only three brake lights are showing. For pretty much of the rest of the clip you can see all four. The roll bars are well hidden.

As a result, you can't hear any sound whatsoever.

Why does this car chase carry on back where it started after it ended in a three car pile up?
Why is that fire hydrant made out of balsa wood?

Exhilarating car chase that doesn't address 'how to catch up with the bad guy in a high speed chase', but rather 'what to do when you have!'

That Mustang might not even be that muscular. Many, even fastbacks were made with really boring motors.

By 1976 these car chases were done to death, well done but pointless. Check out Stuart Whitmans, "Dirty Harry "gun at the end. XD
