You can go to the city by taking the bus, and go to the barber shop. You can get a free makeover that will make your character look like your Mii. I've been watching my younger brother play this game, and I noticed that you can't do favors for people, unless they ask you first. Just keep talking to people, and eventually they'll ask you for a favor.
