Well the whole structure of rugby has changed since regional rugby was introduced in Wales. Neath would now be classed as a Semi - pro side wheras they were fully professional before regional rugby.
Its not so much a complete slide into obscurity, rather than a change in circumstances (not really for the better).
Oh wait, I've found some info about the league structure of domestic Welsh rugby. So, the elite league is the Celtic League, inc Ospreys etc, and then Neath are in the division below, so to speak? Overall seems like a very complex league system, but the benefits are evident. A country the size of Wales shouldn't really succeed on the international stage like it does.
I've recently found out about South Wales Scorpions RLFC being set up in Neath (Lets hope they work out better than Celtic Crusaders RL), so have been reading up on The Gnoll and that.
What's the score with Neath RU? Were they a real force back in the day? As far as I can tell they're not an overly cracky side now, but back in the day they had the likes of Davies and were playing the Aussies.
I was at that game, around about 1986 I think; one of many magic moments from JD before he went to the Scarlets then Widnes: The man was a rugby genius!!
one of my favourite ever players . all class the welsh wizard . i loved his try at wembley in a rugby league test for gb against aust. when he did that boofheaded fullback mullins for pace and CLASS . what a footballer . wish that try was on you tube .
shame he couldnt repeat that when he played in the NRL/ARL for Nrth Qld cowboys. biggest disspointment of the 1990s. ps mullins rocks, and scored countless tries better than this, albiet in league.
Shame there isn't footage of that time he ran around Mullins and left him for dead scoring a try for GB v Aus. Oh yeah he went on to win man of the match in that game.
Davies's nose was clearly off-side in this video, try should of been disallowed!

Funny that. Matty Johns describes in his book From the Sheds "The best try I've ever seen" scored by Davies for the Cowboys v Newcastle.

Your wish has been fulfilled, lipkee1. Here's the try from that 1994 test at Wembley you were talking about:
