hey everyone im cool because i say everyone who becomes very well known is a sell out. that makes me an original fan oh yeah im so fuckin cool, shut the fuck up if you want someone to make songs about the same thing their whole life maybe you should seriously you people remind me of when i was in junior high..of-course you very well could be ...
I honestly don't agree with most of the listener's ideals. I feel like Anarchy cannot work. Due to the average person being an idiotic zombie, they would wreak havoc once any government was dissolved. I admire these listeners, though . They refuse to be brainwashed, and they look at the world for how it is. They are incredibly thoughtful, and they aren't the average moron. You listeners are the first wave of change, although it may not be in the ways you think and want it to be.
@PandaWithAShotgun People are too greedy and power hungry for the world to live in an Anarchist system, for anarchy to work everyone has to be able to do their part and most of the world wont do that, especially america.
Rapid Decompression!!! LOOK AT MYSELF!!??? What happened to seeing reality!? Corporate america is getting all the glory for holding us down!? What happened to AGAINST ME!? I think their music sounds better but their message is being blurred by their apperent lyrical takeover by bullshit america. Ur "TEENAGE REVOLUTION" is alive and well! Take ahold of it and take ur musical prowless back!!!
This is WEIRD! AGAINST ME!, used to be against government. Now they seem to be a working for the government. Whatever happened to ANARCHY!? Ur video for "I Was A Teenage Anarchist", felt like a soccer team who was up 3-0, pulling their keeper. How much did u get paid off? Does anybody see what I see?! Who can we look up to now?!
@thegreenclover1 Agree completly. That song is the biggest sell out I have ever seen. Its them "growing up." They value individualism more than equality...typical for anarchists.
Can anyone recommend any bands that sound like this song - not like against me! as a whole just this song, as i love it and they haven't reallydone any other songs like this. Cheers folks!
Why God why do 11 people hate this music video and why does it not have more views this should be a message that people should learn right away just by watchingthis
fuck all the hate and yack yack yack , this song is awesome , this band is awesome and there the best thing out there as far as a live act. also this video is really cool!
..do your thing with your community, ill do mine- If we get along, or HAVE to network- we do that. If ANY single group tries to impose upon others, EVERYONE helps to eliminate the threat. immediately." this could be implemented on a state level, and would be same all the way down to a single person-
Thats the gist of the THEORY. Reality is, of course, a different animal.
500 chars is not enough dude, Id be happy to send you links regarding your arguments.
..our society is RUN and BUILT for sociopaths. there is no doubt about this. watch "the corporation", f.e. If every human were "informationally equal", these types of people could be brought out into the open quite easily, and everyone would know what to look for. We are living in an age where that just might be possible(the info part:-). As for the people disagreeing with anarchy, that really has nothing to do with its success, since the definition basically is "you
Your argument is somewhat valid, however I have heard it many times before. First of all, I believe that a lot of the deviant behavior that we exhibit towards each other is actually BECAUSE of the psychosis we are automatically subjected to by being part of such an utterly destructive society, not human nature. I think sociopathic behavior would actually be an exception If life on this globe was halfways fair. There is research supporting that. Unfortunately,
With your short message you have done 3 amazing and extremely rare things, at least for youtube:
You have a)listened to someone. b)Researched something c)Come back to correct yourself
For this, you get massive probs from me. I am sorry that I tried to put words in your mouth, and it gives me hope that not everyone on youtube is a fucking troll.
peace brother, and keep on searching, things do not have to be the way they are nowadays.
again, you probably never have heard a coherent definition of anarchism. Anarxhism is about self governance and transparency. Seriously people, at least LOOK UP THE FUCKING WORD before you argue, this is just fucking pathetic and you are wasting my time (which is a hard thing to do) Yourf comment merely shows you believe the people who rule over you are the only thing protecting you, and thus you are a PUS.
seriously tho just look it up or watch a short video, dumbass.
@DJpopel ok, so i researched anarchism, as you suggested. i now understand the idea better. thanks for the advice. HOWEVER, understand that i didnt understand it previously not because i believe that the government is the only thing that protects us, which is a load of bullshit you need to stop spouting, but that i truely did not know the modern definition of anarchism.
@DJpopel without a government people would be just as violent, cunning, opportunistic, selfish and arrogant in their own beliefs as they are now. If anarchy became reality in any society a "state" would inevitably arise and gain power, there will always be people who disagree with anarchy so ironically it would be impossible to uphold for any period of time. You would have just as many people disagreeing with how to run things and what morals are without any government imposing them on us.
read some fucking Bakunin or at least watch one of those "what is anarchism" videos, you arrogant twat. You obviously have absolutely NO idea what you are talking about.
Anarchism is in no way contrary to people "banding together" which is in fact an integral part of anarchism. YOu are the definition of a youtube user, you HAVE NO FUCKING IDEA what you are talking about, you PRIDE yourself in not having even read the argument, and yet you spout your ignorant opinion.
I haven't read the entire argument, but anarchism is dumb, and you are dumb for talking about anarchy on a medium that is in the very definition of capitalism. It isn't real, people band together, and there is nothing you can do about it. Anarchy at most is a quick moment in time when people realize there is no safety, then they do what everyone does to fix it, group together for their survival. Change what you don't like, but don't run on ideals that are illogical and unreal. This music sucks.
@bmwmotorsickle If this music sucks why are you listening to it? Also people banding together and grouping together for survival is kind of the entire point of anarchism. Taking care of ones self and ones community without a state. People who believe in chaos and destruction would be nihilists. Just saying.
so your saying anarchism is impossible? and realizing this is " growing up and understanding"
Then you better call me one peter pan ass motherfucker, you fucking traitor.
How could you POSSIBLY know that anarchism is impossible, it has never truly been put into practice. All I see in your comment is somebody who just couldnt take the stress and fucking caved, and is now spreading defeatist bullshit.
Id rather fight and die for something better than "grow up", you cowardly douche.
@DJpopel i hate to say that your living in denial, and that your belief system is foolhardy, but anarchism leads to nothing but chaos, death and sorrow. without a governing body, or a set of laws and rules by which to live, humanity would, and i mean this quite literally, dissolve into a "survival of the fittest" mentality, causing a kind of modern tribal warfare. cities would be demolished, destroyed by looting and crime on a mass scale.
I saw them in 2004 because my GF was a fan. I just heard their new stuff today, and it is awful - I'm not talking lyrics. I don't have a well informed opinion in the sellout argument, but from what I can tell, this is horrendously bland and without heart. Even if it does have heart, it still is uninspiring. Listen to something else, at least their old stuff.
@hadoukenishy look up Adidas online. Schuh.co.uk has plenty. I can't tell exactly what style those are, but it looks like either a pair of Campus, Nizza, or Super Cupps.
Can I just note that when Against Me! played Lollapalooza this year, they didn't close with one of their new songs, but with Baby, I'm An Anarchist? As in, from Reinventing Axl Rose? And that Tom Gabel decided to do a little crowd surfing in the middle of the song? Just throwing that out there. ;)
What is funny is that if you look at the people complaining about how they "sold out" you will find the sellouts, posers, and armchair critics that they are complaining about. If you think they represent everything they hated then you weren't really paying attention and never really understood what they were saying.
I agree completely with @bmxboy443. I GREW up in the DC hardcore scene of the 80's and they are singing the anthems of our generation. Posers? Don't think so.
For fucks sake! They ve had songs which are easier listening for ever! Sink Florida Sink and Joy are extremely chill songs! I dont see what the fuck people are bitching about because I promise you, if you go to one of their concerts you would be screaming along to Teenaged Anarchist, Rapid Decompression or White Crosses. Fuck off with the whole Against Me sold out, its garbage.
Every single Against Me! video on YouTube has this never ending arguing about the same old thing. Can we just listen to the songs, please, I know I'm not asking that much. (I know I could just ignore the comments, but still... this is getting old. If you don't like the way they are now, hold on to your Reinventing Axl Rose and be happy.)
@GlorifiedDStylee Pointing out what isn't punk also doesn't make you know what punk is either. In fact, even stating that you have any idea what even the rough definition of punk is, makes you the complete opposite of punk. It's a feeling, not a dictionary reference.
@GlorifiedDStylee An undefinable ideal and musical style cannot die. It can sell out (like it has), it can market itself (like it has), it can change (like it has), it can progress (like it has), AND also people fail to realize that it can do one more thing... stay the same? Listen to the Casualties and tell me they haven't remained Punk without lying. Stop trying to define Punk. Look at the clash or the ramones. Today, we'd consider most of their songs Pop. But they're punk. Why? Who knows..
Well the point is-they got sick and tired of "hardcore" kids talking about how they were gonna change the world and then just sitting on their asses, and they also realized, that anarchy is not possible on this earth. If any of u believe anarchy would truly work, u have to be pretty dumb.
A lot of people on here need to look up the definition of Anarchy. Don't talk about Indian tribes cause that's not anarchy cause they have a government. Anarchy is just something teenagers talk about to try and sound more bad ass than each other.
The lyrics speak for themselves. The song is about how the scene didn't live up to it's promise. Convenient politics and mob mentality, yeah, I can see why you are pissed he didn't stick to those conventions
@nothatpunk Yep, the lyrics speak for themselves. The lyrics are shit. One single word from that song (Teenage Anarchist) jumps out at me: STYLE. 'I had the style' croons Gabel. Proving that being a so called 'anarchist' was never about being part of a movement for serious social change and everything about being a punk rock poseur. The revolution wasn't a lie. Tom Gabel was.
@austinandjoefilms Yeah anyway... You know if the Ramones had done this song originally, no one would be arguing about whether it was punk. You're right.. you can definitely hear the influence.
It seems to be that Against me recognise ideas like 'Anarchy' all sound powerful and noble when your 15 but when you come to live in the real world it just doesn't work. You come to realise free for alls just breed chaos and hardship and the worlds just a shittier place to live in. True Anarchy doesn't work and 'Anarchists' are just another out group.
"WAAAAH I'M AN ORIGINAL FAN, THEY'VE SOLD OUT." Grow the fuck up, not all of us stay within a teenage-mentality all our lives. Most these guys are gonna be in their 30's and continue to not give a fuck about anarchism or what any of you so called "fans" think. So enjoy the music while it lasts, because pretty soon this will be replaced by whatever other trendy shit the media throws our way. I for one enjoy their old stuff and the new because I'm here for music not politics.
@clitwad Dude I know they were better then, but if you "were" a fan you don't have to talk them down, just don't listen to them anymore but respect the money that they deserved if they were still the same you'd want them to make the money! You are right about the Anarchy comment @citsonga74 but unfortunately we as americans aren't civilized enough to be an Anarchist Country!
And before people start flaming me for my comments..I am not saying the government is perfect by any means, but anarchy is not by any means an acceptable substitute.
all of you are ridiculous its not selling out its growing up much like ed norton in American History x he belived a lie a a younger person and realized alot of it was a lie now i love this band to death all new and old shit i have every album they grew up stop saying they sold out and grow up
Hey all you fuckin whingers, go and find the next "under-ground" band that you can claim as your own, wait for them to "sell out" and then you can complain about them as well, swallow your fuckin' "tough guy, I'm too cool for school, I'm a hardcore punk" pride and FUCK OFF!
Everybody likes to talk shit but for the White Crosses album this is probably the best song on it besides "Teenage Anarchist" without all the "mainstream" comments! Short and to the point like some of their earlier and better stuff!
Having read all the "for's and against's" for the way Against Me! have evolved I agree with some and disagree with other's but can't we just take the song's for what they are? They bring us all pleasure to our ears in this case for 1:56 and can reproduce it on stage. Just a good ol' kick ass rock'n'roll band.
How can any of you people actually have an opinion about anything? They are a band, a band that can evolve into whatever they want to. You don't have to listen to them but you put your opinions on the web because....why? Do you even have a reason or is it just your hand rest from ur intervals of shit talking bands and watching internet porn? Jesus Christ
All people who are fans of all older bands' music like to complain, because when a band they love develops new material, they can no longer go back and appreciate their "band they found." Ignore them. These mates are great, and no band stays the same forever. Appreciate them.
@Rabscallion69 okay i have millions of friends who listen to mainstream shit and they have heard this song at my house. did they like it...noooo. i think the words were "what the hell is this". if they tried to cross over to mainstream pop bands it didnt work out.
@clitwad Maybe you don't understand the word hyperbole or exaggeration.
I doubt they have one million friends. I'd like to meet a person who had one hundred. Get off your high horse already - the point they were trying to make is, this isn't a damned 'pop' band.
@Rabscallion69 Everything is explained in "I was a teenage anarchist" The whole reason they went this way. They realize that everything they've been trying to uphold is impossible. It's called growing up and understanding.
I love bands like Seven Seconds, Minor Threat, The Casualties, and Black Flag... but you can't honestly hold that mentality all of your life, it's impossible. One day you'll get it too.
@bmxboy443 Yeah, but did Tom have to fucking endorse Obama?
I am not even an anarchist and that pisses me off. Weirdly enough, "Teenage Anarchist" is still a better song than a lot of recent ones. It seems to involve actual feelings instead of "I signed to a label/shit I feel awwwwwkrd."
@bmxboy443 I get that they grow up. That's fine with me. I always thought anarchy was retarded anyway. BUT, does 'growing up' have to entail writing dumb, shitty, generic arena rock to appeal to a mass audience of idiots?
@TheTrueHappy Well, it comes pretty close. It's dumbed down pop-punk for 15 year olds with a TERRIBLE squeaky clean arena rock production. The rest of the album IS arena rock, so if we can't agree that this song is, then there are 13 more songs that most definitely are. Against Me! are finished. Please just STOP!
@03h98u This actually sounds like a combination of a generic Ramones or Sex Pistols song if you take out the chants and the little guitar thing in the beggining there. Arena rock would be more like Kiss or some shit. As far as lyrics, yeah it happens
@bmxboy443 look at rancid bro, theyr gettin into their 40's and punk rock is still their life, its not a mentality as much as it is a way of life, its in your blood to stay
@bmxboy443 Actually, I think that "I was a Teenage Anarchist" tells people that society wants them to give up their rebellious ways and even though one may submit and do as society commands, Against Me! tells us to recall those days and bring it back.
@bmxboy443 Yeah, but it's Against Me! and knowing them, they don't write songs about how they're so mature now and how people need to be mature and conform.
Baby, I'm an Anarchist. Tom Gabel doesn't sit back and suck on society's tit.
@codarkstarxx13 When it's a statement like "the revolution was a lie" you can't dispute what they mean by that. it's plain, simple and obvious. Yes, most lyrics can be skewed into many different meanings, but this has one solid obvious meaning, the same can't be said for the rest of the song, but this one line is obviously a set in stone purpose for effect. There is no room for argument, if you think that there is, you're obviously not thinking.
@bmxboy443 You focus on one line.. yet you refuse to look at the rest of the song and the ideals behind Against Me! in general. The song is about how Tom had the ideal of being an anarchist, he believe in its values, but it became a scene, it became a fashion, it became fake. Knowing that his true ideals were not fake, he could no longer classify himself as such or else he would be sucked into the fashionable scene.
If you're going to analyze lyrics, put them in context.
@codarkstarxx13 You're not understanding. "the revolution was a lie" destroys your whole argument, that one line gives the song a biased meaning. This will be my last message because... Well, I obviously don't need to argue my point seeing as how people are agreeing with it.
@bmxboy443 Oh yes, since a few people agree with you, you must be right huh. You completely rejected what I just told you, and went back to your original thesis, of which I already told you why the one line doesn't explain an entire picture.
It's like taking a scene from a movie out of context to give it a completely obscured meaning.
@Sagesparten007 haha honestly dude, I didn't see that movie until last week, I'm 18, and I had never seen the movie. This was just something I had gone through on my own.
Most people die a little and lose their spirit as they get older. You can call it "growing" up or "understanding" if you want. Some people just aren't strong enough to keep wanting to set the world on fire as they get older, and eventually fall into the mold of society, and lose what made them, them. But than again, some aren't fake little conformist pussies :)
I'm an Anarchist and I realized that rioting and smashing stuff was not helping my cause. I decided the best way was to talk to people and educate them on what Anarchy is and show them the reality of the world around them. I think Against Me! might have reached the same conclusion.
@xTAxGUNZ You're 100% right. Anarchy isn't all about chaos either though, keep that in perspective. A majority of punks nowadays think Anarchy means you have to disrespect everything and everyone, not true. Anarchy means simply, no government. There is a such thing as peaceful anarchy without the hippie bullshit.
what the fuck do Seven Seconds, The Casualties, or Black Flag have to do with anything? Minor Threat wasn't even an explicitly "political" band, but regardless Ian is still very active in his community both in and outside of music. this is one of those cases where the band is most certainly not "developing" or "experimenting" they're writing boring radio rock songs that were mostly written in pieces during soundchecks.

@iamcitizen2010 I'm referring to the fact that you can't always uphold the beliefs you once had to survive in the world. Think of this situation. You slip up and have a kid. You can't get a job good enough to support that kid while you have a 8 inch mohawk dyed green, you can't go around saying "fuck the police" at age 40 because if you get arrested you have responsibilities, it'd be impossible to believe the system is corrupt when you yourself are a part of it.
of those bands you mentioned, the only one that had any concrete "beliefs" that they explicitly wrote about was Minor Threat. Ian Mackaye's pushing 50 and is still "upholding" said "beliefs" (wiki him if you need proof).
hypotheticals are useless, especially this one because i'm a faggot.
lastly, the argument that one can't be against the system because it's in some way hypocritical is a facile one. the whole system IS one big contradiction, so why can't i desire to destroy it?
@iamcitizen2010 You dwell in hypocrisy period if you look at it close enough. Those bands themselves too. The Casualties are against the police, but everyone abides by the rules, except for the ones in jail.
The people that run the system are corrupt, the people that take advantage of it are as well. The system itself, by the books isn't. Just like anarchy, if peaceful anarchy was even possible, you still have variables such as gangs, "crime", and capitalism would still HAVE to exist.
@bmxboy443 I actually disagree. Look, I'm part of the system, I was born into it, and I'll probably die a tried-and-true American system-dweller. That doesn't mean I have to like it. I can live my life, constantly holding strong to the belief that this isn't the way it should be- that's why anarchism is a political philosophy, and not something that you see on television or the newspaper. Yes, we're all fundamentally aware of the fact that it'll probably never happen, and that it would be near-i
@bmxboy443 impossible to sustain it, but we don't exactly all have to be pragmatists here. I hope I'll always be an anarchist, just so I can have something that I can call my own, and something I can believe it. I'm proud that Against Me! decided that that direction wasn't for them, but I don't think you have to give your beliefs up just because you realize it was time to "face reality". Plus, I think that that's what anarchism is all about- challenging what everyone else calls reality.
@bmxboy443 there's maturing and there's giving up. I wouldn't call it selling out, cause its kinda punk as fuck that he's spitting in the face of his anarchists fans, but its really depressing to see it change so much.
@bmxboy443 Its called apathy and we are all fucked because of this ass backwards. "Well son its time to grow up and face facts" Attitude. Growing up should only give you the strength and foresight to fight harder.
@bmxboy443 I would agree except that Tom fucking went on camera and supported Obama. There's the anarchist scene is rigid and then there's fuck individuals, let's just buy into the major party bullshit.
I like this song, but Tom's Obama video breaks my heart.
@bmxboy443 HA fuck you.you obviously dont know what punk is.its living forever and actually living.its not living when your 18 and being a buissnessman when your 30.thats called bullshit.you can never get too old.you only have one life, use it,dont waste it.
@0xBulletproof It's people like you that make punks hate the idea of labeling themselves. 90% of people who claim to be punk, don't think. "Fuck the police", "anarchy, fuck yeah", "chaaaaooooossss!!!!" are the most common thoughts of today's punk. Without intelligence or thought, those don't mean anything besides people parroting words out of a book, or from what they see.
You're not supposed to take the meaning straight from a song as is, it's there for you to derive your own meaning out of.
@bmxboy443 you can but you have to face facts that it will never happen, you can dream for it but you cant honestly believe that anarchy will rule some day
I think everyone should just shut the fuck up about them "selling out"
like, they're an amazing band and Tom wanted them to go for it and get big.. Anyone would do the same if they had the chance and thought they were good enough!!
If you like the band, jsut fucking like them and stop bitching..
If you're a fan you support the band and the fact that they're finally making more money and they deserve it! If you don't like the new Against Me keep listening to their old stuff and don't listen to the new shit! oh and @Boehme64 by the way "Searching For A Former Clarity" was fucking awesome!!! I personally do like their old stuff better but have no problem with the new shit cause i support every thing they do but that might just mean i'm a real fan!
I have nothing against people who listen to and enjoy their new shit, it's not your fault that you're sheep who like poppy mainstream corporate cock gobbling bullshit. All I'm saying is that they completely changed their sound and made songs talking shit about the people who loved them in the beginning.
@clitwad "Poppy corporate mainstream corporate cock gobbling bullshit" isn't why I like this. I like this because it's Against Me!, and I care enough about the band to let them do what they want with their music. "Selling out" and "maturing" are entirely different things, though often confused. To compare it to the genre, it's like confufsing "anarchism" with "chaos". Not the same.
@Heyjude702 Out of everyone who has argued with me about this, I have much more respect for your argument than anyone else. That being said; they directly talk shit about anarchists, the fan base that loved them in the beginning. That is the only reason I lost respect for them, not because the changed their sound or their politics, but because they metaphorically teabagged their original fans.
@clitwad Off of his blog - "if it's heresy for an Anarchist to say 'FUCK Anarchy' then Anarchism is truly just another flag, and I say burn it along with the rest of them." Does that help? He's not condeming anarchists, he's pronouncing himself as a humanitarian over all else, go check it out.

part3/3
..do your thing with your community, ill do mine- If we get along, or HAVE to network- we do that. If ANY single group tries to impose upon others, EVERYONE helps to eliminate the threat. immediately." this could be implemented on a state level, and would be same all the way down to a single person-
Thats the gist of the THEORY. Reality is, of course, a different animal.

Part2/3;)
..our society is RUN and BUILT for sociopaths. there is no doubt about this. watch "the corporation", f.e. If every human were "informationally equal", these types of people could be brought out into the open quite easily, and everyone would know what to look for. We are living in an age where that just might be possible(the info part:-). As for the people disagreeing with anarchy, that really has nothing to do with its success, since the definition basically is "you

part1/2
Your argument is somewhat valid, however I have heard it many times before. First of all, I believe that a lot of the deviant behavior that we exhibit towards each other is actually BECAUSE of the psychosis we are automatically subjected to by being part of such an utterly destructive society, not human nature. I think sociopathic behavior would actually be an exception If life on this globe was halfways fair. There is research supporting that. Unfortunately,

You have a)listened to someone. b)Researched something c)Come back to correct yourself
For this, you get massive probs from me. I am sorry that I tried to put words in your mouth, and it gives me hope that not everyone on youtube is a fucking troll.

again, you probably never have heard a coherent definition of anarchism.

@DJpopel ok, so i researched anarchism, as you suggested. i now understand the idea better. thanks for the advice. HOWEVER, understand that i didnt understand it previously not because i believe that the government is the only thing that protects us, which is a load of bullshit you need to stop spouting, but that i truely did not know the modern definition of anarchism.
teebown24 1 year ago 37
@DJpopel without a government people would be just as violent, cunning, opportunistic, selfish and arrogant in their own beliefs as they are now. If anarchy became reality in any society a "state" would inevitably arise and gain power, there will always be people who disagree with anarchy so ironically it would be impossible to uphold for any period of time. You would have just as many people disagreeing with how to run things and what morals are without any government imposing them on us.
FesteringFiesta 1 year ago
@bmwmotorsickle
read some fucking Bakunin or at least watch one of those "what is anarchism" videos, you arrogant twat.
Fuck U
DJpopel 1 year ago
I haven't read the entire argument, but anarchism is dumb, and you are dumb for talking about anarchy on a medium that is in the very definition of capitalism. It isn't real, people band together, and there is nothing you can do about it. Anarchy at most is a quick moment in time when people realize there is no safety, then they do what everyone does to fix it, group together for their survival. Change what you don't like, but don't run on ideals that are illogical and unreal. This music sucks.
bmwmotorsickle 1 year ago
@bmwmotorsickle If this music sucks why are you listening to it? Also people banding together and grouping together for survival is kind of the entire point of anarchism. Taking care of ones self and ones community without a state. People who believe in chaos and destruction would be nihilists. Just saying.
john711ify 10 months ago
@bmxboy443
so your saying anarchism is impossible? and realizing this is " growing up and understanding"
DJpopel 1 year ago 2
@DJpopel i hate to say that your living in denial, and that your belief system is foolhardy, but anarchism leads to nothing but chaos, death and sorrow. without a governing body, or a set of laws and rules by which to live, humanity would, and i mean this quite literally, dissolve into a "survival of the fittest" mentality, causing a kind of modern tribal warfare. cities would be demolished, destroyed by looting and crime on a mass scale.
teebown24 1 year ago
I saw them in 2004 because my GF was a fan. I just heard their new stuff today, and it is awful - I'm not talking lyrics. I don't have a well informed opinion in the sellout argument, but from what I can tell, this is horrendously bland and without heart. Even if it does have heart, it still is uninspiring. Listen to something else, at least their old stuff.

@GlorifiedDStylee Pointing out what isn't punk also doesn't make you know what punk is either. In fact, even stating that you have any idea what even the rough definition of punk is, makes you the complete opposite of punk. It's a feeling, not a dictionary reference.

@nothatpunk Yep, the lyrics speak for themselves. The lyrics are shit. One single word from that song (Teenage Anarchist) jumps out at me: STYLE. 'I had the style' croons Gabel.
One day you'll get it too.
bmxboy443 1 year ago 55

LucyStag 1 year ago
@bmxboy443 I get that they grow up. That's fine with me. I always thought anarchy was retarded anyway. BUT, does 'growing up' have to entail writing dumb, shitty, generic arena rock to appeal to a mass audience of idiots?
03h98u 1 year ago
@03h98u This is not arena rock.
TheTrueHappy 1 year ago
@TheTrueHappy Well, it comes pretty close. It's dumbed down pop-punk for 15 year olds with a TERRIBLE squeaky clean arena rock production. 03h98u 1 year ago
@03h98u This actually sounds like a combination of a generic Ramones or Sex Pistols song if you take out the chants and the little guitar thing in the beggining there. Arena rock would be more like Kiss or some shit. As far as lyrics, yeah it happens

@bmxboy443 Actually, I think that "I was a Teenage Anarchist" tells people that society wants them to give up their rebellious ways and even though one may submit and do as society commands, Against Me! tells us to recall those days and bring it back.
codarkstarxx13 1 year ago
@codarkstarxx13 One simple line from that song numbs your reasoning though.
"The revolution was a lie"
bmxboy443 1 year ago
@bmxboy443 Yeah, but it's Against Me! and knowing them, they don't write songs about how they're so mature now and how people need to be mature and conform.
Baby, I'm an Anarchist. Tom Gabel doesn't sit back and suck on society's tit.
codarkstarxx13 1 year ago
@codarkstarxx13 ... what the hell are you talking about? It's said plain and clear in the song... You can't argue with that.
bmxboy443 1 year ago
@bmxboy443 I sure can.. and that's what makes music what it is. I guess you'll just have to deal with it.
codarkstarxx13 1 year ago
@codarkstarxx13 When it's a statement like "the revolution was a lie" you can't dispute what they mean by that. it's plain, simple and obvious. Yes, most lyrics can be skewed into many different meanings, but this has one solid obvious meaning, the same can't be said for the rest of the song, but this one line is obviously a set in stone purpose for effect. There is no room for argument, if you think that there is, you're obviously not thinking.
bmxboy443 1 year ago
@bmxboy443 You focus on one line.. yet you refuse to look at the rest of the song and the ideals behind Against Me! in general. The song is about how Tom had the ideal of being an anarchist, he believe in its values, but it became a scene, it became a fashion, it became fake. Knowing that his true ideals were not fake, he could no longer classify himself as such or else he would be sucked into the fashionable scene.
If you're going to analyze lyrics, put them in context.
codarkstarxx13 1 year ago
@codarkstarxx13 You're not understanding. "the revolution was a lie" destroys your whole argument, that one line gives the song a biased meaning. This will be my last message because... Well, I obviously don't need to argue my point seeing as how people are agreeing with it.
bmxboy443 1 year ago
@bmxboy443 Oh yes, since a few people agree with you, you must be right huh. You completely rejected what I just told you, and went back to your original thesis, of which I already told you why the one line doesn't explain an entire picture.
It's like taking a scene from a movie out of context to give it a completely obscured meaning.

Most people die a little and lose their spirit as they get older. You can call it "growing" up or "understanding" if you want. Some people just aren't strong enough to keep wanting to set the world on fire as they get older, and eventually fall into the mold of society, and lose what made them, them. But than again, some aren't fake little conformist pussies :)

iamcitizen2010 1 year ago
@iamcitizen2010 I'm referring to the fact that you can't always uphold the beliefs you once had to survive in the world. Think of this situation. You slip up and have a kid. You can't get a job good enough to support that kid while you have a 8 inch mohawk dyed green, you can't go around saying "fuck the police" at age 40 because if you get arrested you have responsibilities, it'd be impossible to believe the system is corrupt when you yourself are a part of it.
bmxboy443 1 year ago
@bmxboy443
of those bands you mentioned, the only one that had any concrete "beliefs" that they explicitly wrote about was Minor Threat. Ian Mackaye's pushing 50 and is still "upholding" said "beliefs" (wiki him if you need proof).
hypotheticals are useless, especially this one because i'm a faggot.
lastly, the argument that one can't be against the system because it's in some way hypocritical is a facile one. the whole system IS one big contradiction, so why can't i desire to destroy it?
iamcitizen2010 1 year ago

Yes, we're all fundamentally aware of the fact that it'll probably never happen, and that it would be near-i
punkemoalt 1 year ago
@bmxboy443 impossible to sustain it, but we don't exactly all have to be pragmatists here. I hope I'll always be an anarchist, just so I can have something that I can call my own, and something I can believe it. I'm proud that Against Me! decided that that direction wasn't for them, but I don't think you have to give your beliefs up just because you realize it was time to "face reality". Plus, I think that that's what anarchism is all about- challenging what everyone else calls reality.

@bmxboy443 Its called apathy and we are all fucked because of this ass backwards. "Well son its time to grow up and face facts" Attitude. Growing up should only give you the strength and foresight to fight harder.
Thumbs up to Warren for getting the hell out.

This is just one of those songs where no matter how loud I listen to it, it's not loud enough.

I think everyone should just shut the fuck up about them "selling out"
like, they're an amazing band and Tom wanted them to go for it and get big.. Anyone would do the same if they had the chance and thought they were good enough!!
If you like the band, jsut fucking like them and stop bitching..
montypythonadder 1 year ago
If you're a fan you support the band and the fact that they're finally making more money and they deserve it! If you don't like the new Against Me keep listening to their old stuff and don't listen to the new shit! oh and @Boehme64 by the way "Searching For A Former Clarity" was fucking awesome!!! I personally do like their old stuff better but have no problem with the new shit cause i support every thing they do but that might just mean i'm a real fan!

I have nothing against people who listen to and enjoy their new shit, it's not your fault that you're sheep who like poppy mainstream corporate cock gobbling bullshit. All I'm saying is that they completely changed their sound and made songs talking shit about the people who loved them in the beginning.
clitwad 1 year ago
@clitwad "Poppy corporate mainstream corporate cock gobbling bullshit" isn't why I like this. I like this because it's Against Me!, and I care enough about the band to let them do what they want with their music. "Selling out" and "maturing" are entirely different things, though often confused. To compare it to the genre, it's like confufsing "anarchism" with "chaos". Not the same.
Heyjude702 1 year ago
@Heyjude702 Out of everyone who has argued with me about this, I have much more respect for your argument than anyone else. That being said; they directly talk shit about anarchists, the fan base that loved them in the beginning. That is the only reason I lost respect for them, not because the changed their sound or their politics, but because they metaphorically teabagged their original fans.
clitwad 1 year ago 11
@clitwad Off of his blog - "if it's heresy for an Anarchist to say 'FUCK Anarchy' then Anarchism is truly just another flag, and I say burn it along with the rest of them." Does that help? He's not condeming anarchists, he's pronouncing himself as a humanitarian over all else, go check it out.

@clitwad maybe cause anarchy is stupid...

@robbiehasdimples
orrr maybe the people, to which anarchy is directed at, are pricks in the eyes of the anarchists! :)
it's the people against the government. if we rule ourselves with order, THEY dont oversee every fuckin thing that we do! :D
cherrybombs8 1 year ago
@cherrybombs8 if YOU are ruling over anything, then YOU become the government. without government EVERYTHING will fall apart. sorry =/
