That part about the Soviet Union sounds like a piece of manipulation itself. Mention the USSR which is synonymous to evil and people will immediately get what you mean. Like there was even remotely as much cheap entertainment in the USSR as in the capitalist world today. The Soviet Union actually turned its people into the most well read in the world. In Russia every fool knows Maupassant, here in NL people with university degrees often don't.

I've certainly seen that with my friends, obsessed with football as this really, really important thing; always watching the games, talking about the games and players and managers and teams, letting the team do their living for them instead of living their own lives of any significance. They refer to the team as "we", saying that "we" have done all these things, instead of "the team I/we support" has done all those things.

The media is nothing less than mind control. They lead the debate, they make the argument and counter argument and any other point is dismissed as "extreme" or not relevent

Movies dramas etc Paints a picture in the mind that has a lasting effect on how you are supposed to think, act and behave. These images that stay in your mind then becomes a kind of reality that you revert back to on how you should act in certain situations.

To be truely your self. You need to turn of the TV and think.
