  • Haven't listened to this in a long time.

  • Total chill.

  • Why the choice of King D. Sebastião of Portugal as a cover?

  • @pippohispano Seems to be the choice of the person who posted this video , " caoamarelo" sounds Portuguese. The song is definetely Spanish.

  • Ich will eine Zeitmaschine (;

If you like folias check out this website I found, it is a history of the folia along with examples of hundreds (yes hundreds!) of versions and variations along with sheet music for many of them. I spent hours here last fall. Make sure to click around the top a lot to find the acoustic examples, and sheet music, the reason behind the site is interesting as well. You can submit folias that you find that are not on the site. etc... folias.nl

  • @hmr28 My Friend...................YOU ROCK !!

  • @thrillseeker70

Why thank you! I am still trying to compose the perfect version for harp. Bits and pieces have come together but I still have a long way to go!

  • I'm still addicted to this arrangement. Seriously, I'm still trying to make my own set of variations on this.

  • Maybe even Christopher Columbus heard this music , after all it was composed about 2 yrs. before he discovered the New World.

  • @themailman43 i would like to think so, that would be pretty cool.

  • This music is so beautiful. The combination of all instruments is just amazing.

  • This is a precious piece. A pearl really.

  • 'The desired one'

Was born Jan 20, 1554. Missed in battle of Alcacer Kibir, Aug 4 1578.

Made his entrance in the mist of a portuguese legendary figure.

  • D. Sebastião of Portugal was king at the age of 3. .Catarina of Austria, his grandmother was Regent ,as well as Cardinal Henrique of Évora. until he's 14. with only 24 yrs of age; seeking for glory of past times. He reached nortern Africa to fight the moors. Leading the portuguese army to defeat, and to the lost of independence to Spain for 60 years.

This youth was in desperate need for PS3.

  • This piece (which in the Cancionero appears with only two voices filled in, soprano and bass) is not a folia. It may well be a musical number within a play. We cannot know who Rodrigo Martinez was, but the audience would have known. The Spanish court, as most courts, would had their "musicals", light, funny plays (close in spirit to the British pantomimes) with songs and dances. This one may come from the folklore, then arranged by one of the court composers for an entertainment.

  • La Folia has betwitched me and I will forever remain hypnotized.

  • These Spanish versions of the folia are so much more exciting than the Italian. I think it's the plucked instruments & the percussions that are so wonderful.

  • Olha o Sebastiãozinho

  • Beautiful music. Many thanks.

    Groet,

    Paul Koekkoek

  • q musica tan sorprendente

me da mucha algegria esa cancion

    es una melodi muy sorprendente

  • Geat Spansih history !

  • @rolfblank After this young king got himself killed because of his foolishness and lack of mental capacity due to inbreeding, the Filipes of Spain took over. The Spanish Armada was in fact made of Portuguese warships, some with Spanish alterations. That is why they felt so secure in attempting to invade.

    D. Sebastiao was indeed a D. Quixote and only living in wealth due to the endeavors of his predecessors. He left no direct heirs before he went with his band of idiots off to N. Africa.

  • wonderful

  • Melodía fantástica.

  • Utterly intoxicating. (But no hangover.)

  • Realmente hermoso, llena el espiritu de alegria

  • great music !

    perfecto!

  • insane? o no, a dreamer and a quite imature one. A coward? o no, dying among is men when to run was a chance.

  • Me he enamorado de esta canción!

I am in love with this song!

  • świetne, naprawdę.. jestem pod wrażeniem.

  • i know nothing about spanish royalty, except the philip that married to Queen Mary. they probably played something utilizing one of the instrument, which i dont know what, in the movie. i am big fan of elizabeth I

  • "the philip that married to Queen Mary" is Felipe II (Philip II), probably the greatest king Spain has ever had. In Asia, the Philippines got its name from him. Movies of the "Elizabeth, the Golden Age" kind usually show a very distorted image of him, or just don't show him. Since you like Elizabeth I, this info may be useful for you because he was an important figure during her time.

  • btw, do you know who is this portrait about?

  • A portuguese king, D. Sebastião (1554 - ~1578), famous for the atempt to conquer Alcácer-Quibir wich killed him and eventually left the kingdom in the hands of the Spanish.

The music, Rodrigo Martinez, actually has lyrics who sing about a foolish man that mistakes geese for cows. D. Sebastião was believed to be somewhat insane wich is a funny coincidence...

  • Many thanks for the explanation.

  • D. Sebastiao was actually D. Quixote; Sancho Panc,a was left to pay for his master's folly.

  • so spanish, I love it!! this could be from any elizabeth I movies (the instruments used)

  • From Elizabeth I ? I would say from Felipe II or Carlos V.

  • Esto me gusto!!!

  • Cuanto más lo escucho más me gusta.

  • ah, heavens. this is bliss.

  • Wow.......intense music, this probably made a really fun dance back in the time that it was popular....oh, how I wish I was back in those times.

  • So do I... Life was very hard then for tha vast majority of the population, but I think this music would compensate.

  • @hermione838

The way you say it is like if you had already been there "once upon a time" :-p

I agree with you. But if I could chose I'd like to be one of the musicians, or dancers, or one belonging to a privilege social group who filled those luxury rooms. Splendorous and afflicted times at the same time... (like all times?)

  • @hermione838 Yes the music is superb and the dance would probably make you laugh your ass off, but being back in that time ? with disease, no antibiotics, scientific ignorance, and crazy reigion and politics stuffed down your throat, no thanks.

  • Jordi Savall has the life force. This music could raise the dead.

  • Hola.

  • jeje Rodrigo Martinez sos vaquero o granjero xD ?

  • multicultura ,andalusi/moorish influence.

  • Try and listen to this without tapping your feet - impossible. Great

  • olha o D. Sebastião

  • From Alfred Deller and Arnold Dolmetsch, the Early Music revival may have started here in England, but Jordi Savall has certainly picked up the baton!

    Long may he continue!

  • brilliant..

  • timless, great thx very much

  • Estupenda pieza!

  • Yeah... totally...

  • AAHH! This has an ability to carry me back centuries----I almost feel"I am there".Wonderful.

    Many,many thanks.

  • Bravo !!!!!!!

    Beautiful...

Thanks Maestro Jordi Savall for your Art!

You make me smile and dance with your folia.... every time

    :)

Thank you my friend Nuno for the video!

  • Gorgeous! Bravo! TY
