@teentitanscat I think that's just their style of playing live. Pick almost any "slower" tempo Clash song and watch it being performed live - it's almost always 10x faster LOL. "Magnificent Seven" is the perfect example. Sometimes I wonder how Joe's even able to sing one sentence without exploding, they play it so fast.

Granted, Should I Stay or Should I Go is one of their more "pop-rock" songs, but that's one of MANY songs they have (they were known for playing A LOT of genres, not just exclusively punk). Listen to their self-titled debut album (songs like White Riot, Career Opportunities, Complete Control) for their best, pure punk. For a mix of genres, the London Calling album is the best example.

@LOLIamEpic BTW, I hope you're not basing your premature opinion this song alone...I think you should give them a chance and you'll really like not only their punk songs but all their other style songs as well -influenced by reggae, rockabilly, ska, jazz, rap, hip hop, etc. They weren't a boring band that played the same thing over and over again and they didn't put themselves in a box. They experimented with their sound while maintaining their focus on social and political issues.

Last thing! I'd even go so far as to say they were more punk than "typical" punks like The Sex Pistols because The Clash actually stood for something in their music. Instead of saying "no future for you" like the Pistols, they wanted you to get off your ass and actually DO SOMETHING about your crappy life and the world's injustices. Listen to songs like Clampdown, Straight to Hell, The Call Up, Charlie Don't Surf, This Is England, etc. They weren't called "the thinking man's yobs" for nothing!

Too pop sounding and old, not alternative and it didn't really become alternative until the early to mid 90's and sadly 80's bands aren't alternative. Many came out in the mid to late 80's. Though the popularity of those bands came in the early to mid 90's. Also grunge was a man focus of alternative, even though it is a sub-genre of Punk. It is not the same though and the clashes early stuff should be played more on some were like 97.9 the loop.
