Awful, im sorry but just awful!!!!! No narative in the music. Its like a ballade on a r&b album. If your gonna make write fussion music be inventive no-one wants to hear somthing bland!!! Waste of money getting an orchestra together to play somthing like this... Use arts funding wisley dont crap it away on novelty. Novelty is not ART
i'm normally thoroughly impressed by his playing but i don't really care for this one so much. it doesnt seem to live up to the image i normally get of him. i will say it started to get good near the end but thats after watching more than half of it. regardless, he's still an amazing player
wasnt that great... idk i like this guy i mean hes amazing but his part doesnt match the orchestra they just dont combine into one melody. He sounds off too, like hes messing up a little bit
I adore Pattillo, but I honestly think that he should stick to his own improvisation couse that's directly from his heart and no composer can outgo that.
I don't know, I've always been a fan of Patillo and the Project Trio, but this piece seems strange. I mean, I know that modern music may be amelodic, but there are always other aspects being developed, like timbre, articulation, gestures or harmony. The beat is pretty much the same and so are the notes. It just seems a waste of Patillo's talent, cause we've all seen him do much more complicated things. A concerto should do exactly this: show the real skills of the soloist. That didn't happen.
The comments about the symphony being amelodic are really amusing. In many modern pieces the structure of the music is much more important than the melody. For older pieces by older composers, there was a different aesthetic. All one has to do is listen to the single motif presented by M. Ravel in his most famous piece, the Bolero, to know that the focus of the piece was NOT the melody, but the emotion the repitition evoked. This piece affects me much the same way.
@tambrathegreat Yes but it does not show a talent. I could play what he is playing technical wise in my sleep. Not with the beatboxing but without it i can. He has so much more talent than this.
There's no clear melody... this makes it hard to sit and listen to. The Beatbox plus orchestra sounds great, but the flute sounds... forced?... almost unnatural through the entire beginning and middle of the piece...
@Xerxes4242 There is a melody. It's built into the strings int the background, and is brought into the the flute part every so often. It takes some carefull listening but it is there.
@moonlitdancer37 Anything that's not one note can be said to be a melody... this is hardly memorable. Have you EVER hummed or sang it to yourself, or even remembered it after watching? Seriously doubt it.
He's a good street performer, but as long as he's beatboxing, he'll be nothing more.
Greg and a Composer named something wolf were hired to collaborate and write this piece together. Greg had as much input on the symphony as he did on his own playing.
not sure how i feel about this... i wasn't very impressed with the arrangement but i think it was a good try. i think that there might be a better way to do this tho...
Greg Pattillo is awesome!!! However, this composer is terrible! The audience didn't even stand after the "Concerto" However when he played his encores the house almost came down! Randy Woolf has wasted more of UNCSA's money and time more than anyone except Ransom Wilson. Good Riddance! The "concerto" was only one movement long and sounds like something a stoner wrote while pretending to be a minimalist composer, copy & pasting two "themes" hundreds of times and calling it art, and charging you..
I loved the idea of having a beatboxing flute concerto. Very modern (or post modern... your choice) and I love the feel. I just didn't understand what the piece is trying to convey. Overall, it was really cool... just wish i got more of the compositional aspect of the piece.
Although i usually like pattillo's and his trio's stuff, i don't really like this composition or his flute playing here so much. His volume relative to the rest of the orchestra doesn't seem that good, and the string parts just don't seem very well written at times. I know nothing about writing for orchestra, but this just doesn't sound that good to me.
hell yeah this is awesome, only thing that could top this one is if you and DJ Radar worked with the same song to make a Beatbox/Flute and Turntable Orchestra.
Greg has a really great talent and I enjoy everything he does but it would just be more practical and sound better with real drums...I mean beat boxing is just a substitute for when you don't have real drums. I mean...why not use real drums in an orchestra concerto? to me an orchestra is about the music, not a showcase of talents.
That was a great performance. I'm used to seeing those crazy upbeat Project songs so it's nice seeing the beatbox flute in a concerto atmosphere. It was the perfect song to unwind to after a long day of work =)
As cool as it is to see this guy who went from doing this stuff on the street by himself for tips, to playing with an orchestra, I gotta say that at some parts, some of this was pretty weak.
Man! AWESOME! Just an advice! It seems that you get to exited playing, and it shows in the rithm and tempo, maybe is that you play by instic or need a little practice, and don't try to play the notes that already passed, it delays everything. Other than that your talent and ability are just INCREDIBLE!!! Really great idea!!! I'll keep watching your videos.
Congrats. What an honor to get to do what you (and almost only you) do best in an orchestra. I only have one question for you: did any of the other flautists offer to be your back-up in case you got sick? ;P
