  • I left college for several reasons (cost, commute, the degree has become useless) and now I'm an apprentice carpenter. I have no debt, no excessive classwork (excluding extra courses I've signed up for myself), more free time, and I'm making good money at the moment.

I think I could have benefited in some ways from college, but in general I in no way regret leaving. I love my job and I love my life.

  • @TheHonp You should be proud of YOURSELF. As a taxpayer, I highly respect you. You are a lot better than other delusional losers that expect taxpayers to "compensate" them because they spend so much time on their education. I have hear someone with a PhD in sociology bitching about how she can't find a good job, and the government should compensate people like her in some way. It makes me sick to the bone. Talking about delusional.

  • I agree with this video for I wish I didn't go to college. But the perceptions that major makes a difference are partly true as there are some liberals arts grads who do pursue successful careers. I'll say in his limilted space that the picture is complex, and often people get jobs due to networking as college grads already saturate the market. I made the choice to be self-employed.

  • How can one make big money if he does not have a skill that makes money for others? College may or may not help with that. It is clearly better to end up having smaller loans to pay back, anyway. Why not get a technical associate degree in auto mechanics, which is practical, instead of wasting time with a BA in Sociology? The guy who is not afraid of getting his hands dirty is the guy with an edge.

  • @sandinyourshoes In a way, career training is better than a liberal arts degree. However, sometimes a bachelor's degree is required. Some of my girlfriends have to finish bachelor's degree in nursing to be able to get jobs at hospitals.

  • @ttiiyy, college can be a bitch at times, and if it costs too much, and if the job prospects are bad, then, yes, it can be a total scam, especially if one has to work forever in a field that never required any degree. Why major in architecture if we will end up delivering pizzas for a living? However, it doesn't have to be hopeless. That is why we should assess our resources first.

Those girlfriends of yours probably have to really think carefully about whether that's what they truly want.

  • @sandinyourshoes I will never bother getting a degree if my job does not require it. However, in my case, my job in the health field does require me to get at least a master's degree, and that's why I have to get it. The result is rewarding because the starting salary can be as high as $70,000 plus benefits.

  • @ttiiyy, that is a good point. Paying back loans is an issue to consider.

  • @sandinyourshoes Honey, don't worry about my girlfriends. They're not stupid teenage girls. We're talking about working moms with children. They want to become nurses because they're intereted in health field; they love flexible work schedules and the good pay. One of them only has to work 4 days a week at a doctor's office, and she gets paid $60,000. She went to a public community college nursing school and got a nursing associate degree. She's happy with her life.

  • @ttiiyy, having children does change one's perspective.

  • @sandinyourshoes This video proves that it does not matter before they go to a public college or a private college, they all have to figure out what their career goals are first. College can indeed be a bitch. I know that because I used to be a student myself. However, I did not spend my money on a worthless degree such as the one in political science.

  • @ttiiyy, that is why one should just follow her dreams if she really will be dedicated to doing so.

  • @sandinyourshoes I get your point, but education is not always scam. As a matter of fact, sometimes education is necessary. If you want to become a dentist, you must go to Dental School. No other way around.

Your example is not exactly convincing. The job prospect of architecture is indeed bad. That's why most people major in engineering. My neighbor's son got an engineering degree, and he now makes about $65,000. I think it's worth it.

  • @ttiiyy, each person is unique. For some it is a scam, for some it is not.

  • @sandinyourshoes The people in this video are just MORONS. They did not even know what their career goals were BEFORE they enrolled in colleges.

However, that does NOT mean that education in general is worthless.

Many of my high school classmates have moved on to pharmacy schools. Even though they do not own their pharmacies, they get paid around $70,000 to $80,000 at pharmacies such as UCI impatient pharmacy or CVS. They did not waste the money on their education at all.

  • @ttiiyy, planning makes the difference, but it is often overlooked. I knew plenty of guys at junior colleges who took over a hundred units and could not transfer anything. What a bunch of clowns they were! The should have gone for academic advisement.

  • @sandinyourshoes I don't know your history, but I got the feeling that you got burned/exploited by a college before.

Maybe that's why you have such a negative view toward education. Look, I know some degrees such as a Doctorate in Philosophy is pure garbage.

However, some degrees are IMPORTANT. If you want to work as an engineer, you will need to get an engineering degree. Otherwise, good luck getting a job.

  • @ttiiyy, yes, for some fields, the degree is essential. Law is a good example.

  • @UltraProle21, so true, so true. These days there are not enough jobs for everyone, and so that can happen.

  • @Aaustin747 fuck that, you can contribute to society with art and english, as well as other majors in that field such as music or theatre. without proper training in these fields, unless youre a total success right off the bat at making music or movies, you need some training. im going to college for music, its what i am passionate about, and yes i can contribute to society with it. fuck your math and fuck your engineering

  • @ArexShortpaw You won't be so arrogant when your private loans are past due and you get the notice that your interest rate has thus been raised from 9% to 18% per year and they demand payment in full when you default. Failing that they will garnishee your wages, freeze your bank accounts, seize your tax refunds, and get a court judgement against future income...in short make your life HELL. My guess is your "passion" for music will wane then.

  • hahaha thats why I'm in the navy ;)

  • Man thats sad. I'll be graduating in May and I feel liked I learned more on my internship then in college

  • @TheBritfashionista

Bro I graduated last May and having been looking for a job ever since. I've had to mooch of friends and family just to survive... I would never do it again, not reccomend it, it is an overpriced SCAM.

  • @joeheine What is your major?

  • People are idiots. Of course you aren't going to find a job with a degree in human development! 4 years in college teaches you virtually nothing worth knowing. It's either A) A ticket to graduate school, where you ACTUALLY learn the field you're going in to or B) a handout to general employers showing that you know how to work hard. A Bachelor's Degree is of no scholarly significance.

  • People with college degrees think they're all educated just because they have a piece of paper with their name on it, but their not. That's why majority of them follow lies taught by society.

  • While there are some facts that college/university charge you money with job training, still, you must always be hardworking, motivated, responsible and well-connected, not just go to school, study a little, and then after school, be lazy and party. Otherwise, it is your fault for career failure, not college/university. This may explain why students complain that college/university is a scam, but did they worked hard enough to get what they want to be when they grow up?

  • @Nel144. Maybe the reason why people are saying college is a scam and what not is because there is some actual truth to that statement. After all, who would better know a bad situation than the person who is smack dab in it.

  • college doesnt = anything. all the baby boomers tell their kids they need to go because their success was based on their educations. however, what the boomers dont realize is that they totally changed the game in ruin or eliminated most of the opportunities they had. their kids wont have these opportunities. the best thing someone can do is cultivate the attitude of entrepreneurship in themselves and learn to work HARD.

  • @RubiconJohn that way, one day those college degree people will be qualified to work for them! :P

  • Thank you,Not all SHOULD go to college.

  • Do what I did. Go to work for Sallie Mae as a collector and call those idiots that really believed what the college recruiter said about all those grand opportunities awaiting you if you just signed the eternal debt slavery document known as a Student Loan. My job at Sallie Mae was as a "Skip-Trace" specialist. I was the guy who found those tweebs trying to hide from the obligation they had agreed to...you know the dumbo who got their beloved undergraduate degree in Underwater Basket Weaving.

  • @romanmel1 lol you are awesome. oddly enough, the jackasses that majored in art history and looked at you like they'd be able to buy and sell you after they graduated and become curator at the louvre, are the ones you're going to track down, the ones who are going to be praying that the phone won't ring.

  • @UltraProle21 Fortunately, I'm retired from the evil Sallie Mae. The truth is this, the government ownes your ass when you are in debt to them. You become their slave. It should be apparent that after three years of searching for work, a BA degree in art history is about as out of favor as a fur coat in a nudist colony.

  • when people told you to go to college and get a degree, they didn't mean get a degree in english or art. they mean't, study the hard stuff like math and engineering and contribute to society.

  • @Aaustin747 lol no kidding. this country seems to be in a state of denial about subjects like art history or music. any time someone says what you just said, somebody gets all upset and screams about how important the arts are. in reality, the arts is about as useful as sports. nothing wrong with it, but it's not what school is for.

  • @UltraProle21 Arts are important. The problem is that too many people forget that artists from the past did not always go to college. You don't need college to become a successful artist.

  • @nixedtv SO TRUE. A lot of "art professors" that teach are usually losers that can't make art that people like anyway. It's disgusting that they're clearly doing "teaching" just for the money.

  • hate to burst your bubble here but not everyone is cut out for that kind of work.

    just saying =/

  • @Aaustin747 Even though I'm not smart enough to get a degree in engineering, I 100% agree with you. However, I can't say the same thing about math in general though. I ADORE math professors who do research on applied mathematics because they are often involved with computer design as well. As for those weird professors who do abstract mathematics, they are as fucking useless as those art history professors or philosophy freaks.

  • They need to modify their saying. "You need to go to college and major in STEM." STEM fields is a US Government acronym for the fields of study in the categories of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics

  • BA in human development...Well no shit you couldn't get a job.

  • Well considering most majors are worthless this makes sense...

  • Agree with this college is not what it sounds

  • The thing about college/university education is that it doesn't guarantees you a successful career. It is up to YOU as a student to make it happen. No matter what you studied, you have to reach a target you want to acquire according to expectations of the job market.

  • Therefore, what I am saying is the moral of happiness and success; work hard, smart, and prove you are competent and related in the job field.

  • @Nel144 SO TRUE. People need to keep the expectation of the job market in mind. However, as a TAXPAYER, it fucking pisses me off that part of my tax dollars is used to fund useless programs such as philosophy at so many colleges. These professors ask some dumb questions such as "who you really are" in lectures. It's insane that we have to pay for their salaries, benefits, and even housing (if that university offers it).

  • Poor youth of today coming on here being discouraged from getting an education. No wonder why so many of them choose to become baby mommas and baby daddy's so that they can mooch off of the government. Two negative factors in this video, wrong majors and paying the high cost of staying on campus. Where I'm from, those who went to college, even in recent years, have been able to find work and move away to make a successful life. The others, well, two words, welfare recipients.

  • I know even nurses who have a hard time getting a job after nursing school. College these days has become a mere formality these days...

  • 1. military

2, got a job at the University

    3.various grants

    4. overloading classes (above 12 hrs.) I did 20 hrs one semester-- yes i got mostly A's

all these equal a net positive cash flow

  • 1.If your not smart enough to go to college for free then you not smart enough to go

2.If your smart enought to go to college for free your to smart to go

    KNOWZ

    peace

  • @SUPERKNOWZ how could i go 2 college for free?

  • with out housing you will alway be poor .say you made $50, 000 a year how much can you buy

with no house .and people that have a home are on loans from banks Big time Debt miss 5 payment your out

  • Just remember the smile on your parents face when you walk. Priceless (Sarcastic Tone)!!!

  • Only reason to go to college is to get the connections.

  • My sister told me she regretted going straight to college instead of going to a community college off the bat. Thankfully, I made the right decision of doing that with all expenses (tuition and books) paid.

  • Fuck College

  • You really need to know what you want to do in life and assess whether or not you need that sheepskin. Because if you pursue a degree in Liberal Arts, Sociology, Psychology (Now, that is a field that pays alot. I say its worthless to get a 4-year degree in it because thats a field that is Ph.D or nothing) etc. High Schools now days keep pushing college to everyone like its some requirement, infact my high school MADE you apply to many colleges and write college essays for English credit.

  • Once the public figures out that college does not pay off and once millions of students begin defaulting on their student loans, the college bubble will be over.

  • The education industry does it's part by playing up the fact that if a person does not go to college, he or she will not be successful. They want students to spend tens of thousands of dollars on overpriced education. The public is just starting to catch on to the fact that this whole college thing is a rip off. There are already too many people with degrees floating around out there without a job.

  • It allows students to borrow huge amounts of money for college without any down payment, without looking at a student's GPA, and without asking what the student plans to study. A large number of students are already in a huge amount of debt before they even graduate, if they graduate. That is how all bubbles are created, including this college bubble that our university system is currently in. The US government should not be in the student loan business.

  • First of all, we are definitely in a college bubble, very much like the real estate bubble of recent history. The reason we are in a college bubble is because the government is in the student loan business. The government finances student loans through it's organization called SALLEMAE (that may not be spelled correctly). SALLEMAE works the same as FANNIEMAE and FREDDIEMAC of the real estate sector. The govt. underwrites loans at an artificially low interest rate.

  • The college bubble is over.

  • @owenmark23. What do you mean by that.

  • My friend just laughed at me today because I'm not going to a 4 yr university...

Its called tech school, you skip the BS, get the piece of paper, cheaper & faster.

I'm a fuckin genius too, smarter than 98.5% of anyone who took the accuplacer

this is really random but 2 more days of worthless highschool and i get to go snowboarding w0000000kowmakomO cant wait......

  • College is only worthless if you were dumb enough to major in field with no associated job field (example: almost anything in the liberal arts dept).

  • I dropped out of highschool Bcuz I hated it. I worked 2 jobs and did some extra work on my free time. I did this for 2 1/2 yrs. I invested in a business and made it grow. Once successful, I opened up more locations. After 8 yrs. I already had 5 locations. Now, I profit from those who want to open a location with my company name, while I'm still making profit from my own stores. I don't work, I have lots of free time, and still profiting, I don't even have a GED. I just invested long hrs of work

  • A recent news report stated that 2012 could be the year of jobs, if this turns out to be true this could be bad news for the colleges because people might spend more time looking for jobs or working at their jobs.

  • I just graduated college last week. Wtf Was I thinking!

  • You got fleeced by your college taking some stupid degree that only a rich kid with too much money and spare time should take.

  • I'm more interested in a technical school because those people benefit WAY BETTER than those with college degrees. Why waste HUNDREDS of dollars sitting in an auditorium with a MILLION students possibly in debt for a worthless piece of paper when I can go to an automotive shop, an aircraft hanger, a computer lab or even a private machinery shop, still learn but with hands on while employers will literally beg me to work for them. Screw college and their so called "degrees."

  • @MsGundamace SERIOUSLY!!!!!?????.....

  • @MsGundamace well that all depends on your career goals doesn't it

  • @PatriotsDomain Or so most would hope. I'm not an economist by any stretch of the imagination (in truth, I am an environmental scientist, hard science) but using the above analysis, people go where the money is - that's the reason why degrees are worth less now than in the past.

  • $85k in a liberal arts degree..shit, did it ever occur to you that it's not the free market that's the problem, it's your fault you don't have a job doing whatever the fuck a human development major would do for a job other than being a Starbucks barista?

  • that is true. college degrees are not necessary to get a job, but some go to college anyway for their own personal enlightenment.

  • @BonishkaFromTexas ....but you need more than a HS degree. A certificate from a trade school is awesome. Degrees are awesome but only if you go to a brick-and-mortar for them (online degrees are not worth the printer paper). Even if you can get a hazardous materials certification, you can come work for the Marcellus shale industry here in PA and make $75,000+ a year. I went and took a noncredit electrical maintenance and wiring class - I was bad at it - but put it on my CV.

  • Why would people take out more than $40,000 or $50,000 in loans to go to college? Surely there are colleges that don't cost that much for all 4 years.

  • Colleges need more money and the only way to get more money is to bring in more students (aka customers) to pay tuition. In order to bring in more students the schools recruit people that don't really belong there and just take their money and give them nothing in return.

  • a degree is pointless unless you major in accounting or engineering. Do the smart thing- go into a trade. Is it glamorous? Hell no, but you will make decent money (electricians make $60k)

  • @PatriotsDomain For now, it pays well. Reverse the situation and reanalyze it. Once the college bubble bursts, flocks of students, angered by college tuition hikes and no jobs, flock to the trades en masse. Sure, one could say that the union will dictate prices, but there will be outliers and others who will work for $10/hour. That and once everyone knows how to put in a drain, plumbers will go broke and be unemployed. And it will happen, too.

  • @redoctober90

I doubt very much there will be an influx of tradesmen. I never hear anyone wanting to learn plumbing or carpentry.

  • DONT BE FOOLED TRADE SCHOOL ARE JUST AS BIG A RIP OFF AS ALL THE COLLEGES!!

CONSTRUCTION WORK IS PART TIME AT BEST !!

YOU NEED PROVEN WORK EXPERIANCE AND STATE LICENSES ALL THAT IS EXCLUDED FROM TRADE SCHOOLS !!

ALL TRADE SCHOOLS FALSELY BOAST ABOUT OJT ON THE JOB,

BUT YOU WILL FIND , IN THE REAL WORLD NO ONE TRAINS THEY WANT PROCUCTION AND FAST !!

BEWARE OF ALL THOSE SCHOOLS ON T.V. ADVERTISING ALL DAY LONG

  • Where do people get this stuff I lived in America all my life and I have never heard "you need to go to college to be successful",you are guaranteed a good job or one at all In the video they never makes it clear who promised them a job once you graduate,a degree is the ticket to the good life or determine your success

  • @king78802 In general, you don't need a certain degree or certificate to be successful, but you have to have marketability. If the market dictates you need a Master's degree to teach (which is true) then you best have it if you want to teach. If you need to have a HS diploma to do $75k/year survey work (which is true) then you best have an HS diploma. The issue is that once the standard is a college degree, employers set it as the norm....which it is nowadays for white collar labor.

  • at 30 years old I hope you all understand why I'm short on temper with people trying to get me into debt, the only debt I want to understand is mortgage. all I want in life is a wife and kid and a paid off home by 35. My attitude is work like a dog, be laser focused, get intense, work as many hours as possible from 18 and on.

  • Woah, who is to blame here? Why is no blame being given to the person who was dumb enough to borrow almost $100k to go to a university I bet 99% of the viewers NEVER HEARD OF. She probably got a degree in Women's Studies or some other useless degree.

  • I could never afford college but I did have an interest and aptitude for computers. So I went down to the book store and started collecting computer manuals for html, php, mysql, flash and so on. I now am partners in a multimedia development business with a business partner who is also self taught.

We get college graduates knocking on our door sometimes and I am always shocked on how much they spent on their courses and how little they know.

  • I never went to College but I already save enough money to support myself in the future. You have to look ahead of time instead of tomorrow.

  • And truths about college: Most majors are useless but are consumer products, like a vacation. Don't expect to get your hands dirty in a classroom. Internships, networking, and research open more doors than good grades. Be careful about online degrees because of the cheat factor. If a class is too hard for you, chances are you're not studying hard enough and you shouldn't drop it because it's useful. You will need at least a B.S. to get any decent non-technical job nowadays, period.

  • Truths in our economy: Not everyone will be rich. Not everyone will make $100k. Someone needs to flip burgers and work the checkout. Trades and science educated people are in short supply, while arts and theoretical thinkers are in surplus. Not everyone will have a job even when the economy is up. You're not supposed to be rich when you're under 30. And finally, chances are most people who post on here live in Mom's basement and don't make what they say and just BS to start arguments.

  • to u.s. students transfer to Canada :) ... here higher education is better, almost free, and the government pays our loans in case we dont find a career when we graduate!

  • I think we ALL majored in debt and binge drinking.

  • This is why college should be universally funded. These people are valuable to society because they should know how to think, they contribute to the culture and in progressing thought and development. Trade jobs are important to keep the system running, and it's respectible, absolutely. But not everyone should have to be obliged to have that kind of lifestyle. It's a free country, people shouldn't be punished for enriching their lives, and living in whatever way they choose to pursue happiness

  • @michelleissocool I went to trade school after high school, got a decent job at by 24 I was going mad, that kind of life isn't for me. It was only by having that technical diploma that I was able to get a job that earned me enough to afford college now. It's really hard, but I survived 2 years without student debt. Now my region is increasing tuition and even for a student who makes 28k while schooling full time, It's becoming more of a struggle. Governments need to fund school.

  • idiot

  • The new, mediocre, intellectual, political elite ruling class is exploiting the gullibility of its citizens with egalitarian sentiments and humanistic idealism. Politicians and the intellectual elite are the only ones who benefit from that bottom 40%.

  • When will modern people get it into their thick skulls? Everyone is not equal! Our modern humanistic, quasi-egalitarian society is a foolish experiment. In more traditional, inegalitarian, aristocratic societies that bottom 40% would go to vocational schools or get low skilled jobs. We need to stop telling everyone that they can be whatever they want to be. It's dishonest and overly-sentimental. I think that we need to get rid of public university education.

  • My girl has a bathelor's degree and is making about $30,000 per year, which is what I was making back in 1998 with no college degree. My brother also has a bachelor's degree with tons of debt, and couldn't find a job anywhere. He is now a mall security guard for $8 an hour which he actually needed an additional certification to get. Yes, he had to pay for that certification too. He has years of experience volunteering for the local ambulance squad, but did that open up any opportunites? NO!

  • College is only a rip off if you can't find a job that is associated with your degree. If anything, that's not the college fault but your fault for not researching your career to see if jobs and demand is high. Also for not seeing if you can branch off into different careers with said degree. I'm a Computer Science Major for Videogame Technology. If I can't find a job in gaming, I can always develop PC programs, make OS for devices, and even develop computer systems for companies.

  • @ThisIsDjYigytugd You really don't need a degree for anything IT related. You can just study on your own or get certifications.

  • @Biocide201 Cause everything in Videogame Development and IT can be learned on the internet in the matter of 2 years. That is possible but not many people do that and even if they do, they most likely don't get the job. More and more people are getting fired in the IT field for not being Masters and knowing how to do literally everything in their field. You can most certainly study on your own and get a job but the chances of that are little to none.

  • @ThisIsDjYigytugd This is true, but that's why you take a sub division of the subject your leaning. Since Computer Science is broad and you may only want to learn something like Networking or System's Administration and excel in it. In any case you don't want to be a jack of all trades and master of none.

  • @Biocide201 That's actual what I'm doing. I know that Studying Videogames alone would get me a wide range of jobs but I'm not putting my beats on just that. I'm also studying Foreign Languages (to teach English, Japanese, and Korean abroad) and Music Production on the side. Always have a backup plan.

  • @ThisIsDjYigytugd good job, people will always need someone to teach abroad for languages and you could become a DJ also.

  • @ThisIsDjYigytugd if you're looking into the IT field your better off getting video tutorial training through CBT Nuggets or TrainSignal and going for some certifications. This is far cheaper way to go and these are national accredited certs. Also load up on as much education as you can and relocate.

  • @HGeneAnthony Also, I know most colleges $10,000+ to go for a semester, which is why I played it smart and I'm attending a new 4 year college. Last semester, I only paid below $1,500 for 12 credit hours, meal plan, bookstore, etc. After 2 or 3 years, I will transfer to a more well known school. I already have jobs lined up for Music and Foreign Language (since I taught myself those) but I want IT. My plan is pretty set, I just have to know my way around the industry to get my way.

  • @ThisIsDjYigytugd getting a job in computer programming is not very easy, due to outsourcing and more automated tools a lot of entry level programming jobs just aren't there. I'm going back to finish my associates in it but then I'm switching to computer security. I'm not even sure about that. I'm working as a plumbing helper now and if I was smart I'd probably stick with that because there's job security.

  • @HGeneAnthony Boy do I already know that. Which is, again, why I have a backup plan upon a backup plan. I have 3 degrees I'm aiming for which are Computer Technology, Music Production, and Foreign Languages. These are all things I love to do and have a lot of jobs within the field that I can do so I'm not limited to what I want to do. Of course it won't be easy sticking to one career but that isn't College's problem. Its a competition, you just have to be much better than others.

  • I'm a railroad freight engineer (choo choo) in chicago for the past 16 years. Graduated HS, never went to college (just wasnt my thing). Last year I made 127k. Yes I tend to work long hours, but its not hard work, just needs alot of common sense which quite a few people lack. So, do most kids need to go to college? No. There are plenty of very well paying 'skill' jobs out there to be had.

  • college is a joke if you attend a no name or for profit school like devry, keller, ITT, University of Phoenix.. or if you major in crap... like that one kid who majored in meteorology. What a joke. That bald dick at 3:48 thinks that people who skipped college are smarter.. what a meatball.. I hold an MBA from a legit college and make nearly 100k.

  • @ShawnTTMartin I'll agree with everything except meteorology....I went through that program at Penn State, a top tier program, and pretty much everyone who graduates gets work in the field. MBA's are a dime a dozen nowadays because every Mom and Pop institution graduates them, and many don't know beyond business calc, which is basically the first semester of four of calculus that the met's do. I had an M.S. holding accountant berate me about my math - until I showed him Diff Eq ;)

  • Im a high school drop out and make 60k+ as an electrician for the government. LOL @ people with student loan debt! I figured that if people could start off getting experience first, then getting the education later it will be more beneficial. In which now at 27y/o pursuing a 4 year degree, that will increase my income 40-50k more a year, which the government covers 90% of tuition. High school should have a career development program rather than college prep courses.

  • @jcas510 Your a fucking boss dude

  • @jcas510

I agree I think Americans in general go to university at too young an age. Like the girl who got her degree in human development. There are jobs in her field. She just doesn't know where, and how. This is simple "story of a loser". She didn't network, she didn't meet professionals in her field, didn't develop relationships with professors. its assuming a lot, but I did those things, and with my international studies degree. I've had a decent career start in int'l banking.

  • @jcas510

You must be one proud individual to say that you dropped out of high school.

  • @DanSaw120285 I dropped out of High School, and now own a business with 56 employees. 24 of them have College degrees. And I start everyone out with $13. per hr. However, some of those who came in out of High School are now making $17 per hr after putting in their time with my company. So yea, I dropped out of High School and am Proud of it.

  • @MrExecutive6

K whats your company? I would love to research it mr. I am proud to be a loser that cannot finish high school. Oh and was your success handed to you? Be honest now.

  • @MrExecutive6 Yes, but your advantage is that you worked hard to overcome your obstacles and invested in yourself and others, and placed risk in your pathway to success and overcame it. In general, you can quit HS and be a billionaire, but it involves entreprenurial vigor rather than "coming up through the system", which typically is several time harder to do. I work retail right now, and I can tell you that all new hires either have or are pursuing degrees...see the "new norm"?

  • @MrExecutive6

your story is rare. Its a good idea to at least graduate HS.

  • @jcas510 Smart MOFO :)

  • @jcas510

Good luck, now you will see the difference between an EE and an Electrician. Also who do you think you are fooling with the increase 40-50k more a year? EE only pays 100k to people with a masters, not just BE add another 1-years in your school debt.

  • @mohab18

Look at USAJOBS.gov and look under electrical engineer they make 6 figures. LOL... You dont need a master's degree.

  • Is college a rip-off? I think it depends on your major. More perspective college students should research college majors and careers before entering college if they want to guarantee a job or make money. However there is still not a 100% guarantee because the needs on corporations change every 5-10 years.

  • If this video showed an an engineering major who graduated with a 4.0 gpa and still could not get a jobs then the "college is a scam" myth would be more believable.

  • Haha 85k in human development. What a worthless degree. Federal Gov needs to step in and stop funding bullshit majors. College needs to be a place for math and science engineers. Theres a reason why china is kicking our butts right now in the tech sector. Too many students want to be professional basketweavers in america lol

  • @Mrjammintime1

I agree. A lot of these majors don't have any jobs available whatsoever. These colleges who push the so called majors just want their students' money. They really have no intention whatsoever in helping their students find jobs in their career paths whatsoever.

  • @Mrjammintime1 Actually Japan is the ones who are high in tech, not China. China has high tech but it was made by few which in Japan it is a majority of people working on technological advancements.

  • @Mrjammintime1 I agree that students need to choose better career fields. I changed my major from Computer Science to Accounting. My adviser said that was a bad move because I would receive less pay. I brought a A+ Certification book and plan on getting certified this coming year. I main goal is to own my own business. That's why I changed to Accounting, so I can learn about the business side, Plus I don't have to worry about any loans. Thank God. :)

  • @JWAtmore1984 accounting is supposedly very stable (but I believe you need to get a masters degree). A+ is a low end computer certification and I wouldn't waste my time with it. You'd be better off with an MCP on XP or 7. Also starting a business is a risky venture. You need to be able to survive on very little to nothing for a few years on average.

  • @HGeneAnthony Yeah, A+ is at the bottom of the list. But it's a start. And thanks for the heads on up on the business side. I been doing research on this topic for a couple of years and have been paying attention to the traps Business owners can find themselves in. I wouldn't quit my day job until I had a good and solid foundation.

  • @Mrjammintime1 lmao!

  • @Mrjammintime1

human development? its a good degree to get. Especially seeing that they can get a Master's in economics, and go into economic policy analysis, or the non-profit route.. So what degrees are worth it? I think we should require all students to write out a plan. This woman has no clue what to do with her degree, and its partly her fault, and the fault of her department of not showing her their options. She could be working outside of the US getting a MBA overseas,

  • @Mrjammintime1 You are a dumb american who only believes in the utility of education equating to FUCKING MONEY. what about the utility of human development and furthering human intelligence. You are equating humans to batteries and computers whose only use is that of science and mathematics. Unfortunately you are too retarted to philosophize human purpose and i won't begin to educate you on the fact that your ideals are what is going to end our population in less than 20 years.

  • @gibro94 Okay... haha, I'm a dumb shortsighted philistine American who hates philosophy and art... I'm gonna assume you are from a backwards resource deprived country where your people lack the ability to industrialize or even create a knowledge sector. This is the reality, America is a capitalist market driven by competition and quality. What our country doesn't need is a society that caters to the bullshit american dream that a career as an artist or movie star is within everyones grasp.

  • This is exactly why I am going to a community college for 2 years and then transferring to the cheapest university that is close to my house. My 4 year degree in computer engineering should only cost $30,000 and I already have $12,000 of that paid off.

  • @Dartht33bagger Exactly the same thing I'm doing. I'm now at a Community College but the college is fairly new so tuition is about 10x cheaper than other colleges. After 2 years I'm going to transfer to the cheapest university that has Videogame Design.

  • Jesus. I was made aware of this in 1974 - going on 40 years ago. At that time, a cover of Newsweek magazine showed a group of kids in graduation cap and gown manning jackhammers and doing road work. In large print was the question: "Is a college education worth it?"

And, no, I am NOT a right-winger. I've seen far too many people without college degrees in good stable jobs. And too many highly educated people being destroyed in a depraved system.

  • Ever notice that most of the people saying college is a rip-off are right wingers? They benefit from an ignorant citizenry, so they have a huge conflict of interest here.

Go to college and be an English major; you will then be equipped to do just about anything you want.

  • Don't go to college. Get an entry level job with a big company right out of high school and work your ass off. Don't get married. Date for as long as you can and if you do fall in love you can settle down and have kids without being married. DO NOT BUY A HOUSE. It's a complete rip-off. DO NOT PLAY THE STOCK MARKET. Do something safe and boring with your money. By following these simple rules, our country will be a lot happier and debt-free.

  • 3:32-3:37 Such a true statement. Successful people use college degrees as a tool to get them where they want to be. The degree in itself didn't make them successful.

  • this show is stupid because they fail to say that if you want to be a: teacher, professor, journalist, stock broker, author, engineer, doctor, accountant, architect, etc. you SHOULD go to a university

  • Um yeah, so another thing, there is no way in hell I'm going to college now. Why do it? You're waisting your money and a good portion of your life, that includes long after you graduate, for absolutely nothing. I will run away from the college scam like a mouse runs away from a cat! X] You know what the key to success and happiness is? You can Google or Bing this, now: Integrity :)

  • Too many people getting Political Science degrees for the sake of university

  • I should add something very important to my previous post. If you select your major entirely based upon what 'makes good money' or avoid college because you don't think it will make you more money, you're also headed for trouble. The TV anchor uses the phrase 'invest in yourself'. And that is the most important thing you are doing. Not investing in a way to make more money. But investing in developing *yourself*. A life of ignorance is not worth living. And you only get one shot at life.

  • Interesting to see all the sour grapes from people who didn't get their college degrees. I got my bachelor of science in computer science in 1988 and have never regretted it. I got a great job right out of college with a small company I stayed with for 20 years. Always received a lot of respect from my employer and coworkers. And now I work for myself, mostly from home. If you get a degree in a low paying field with positions easily cut during a recession, you're gonna have money problems. Duh.

  • I HEAR PEOPLE SAYING MEDICAL FIELDS AND ENGINEERING ARE SAFE. IN CAPITLASM SYSTEMS NOTHING IS SAFE. SOON IF NOT ALREADY CHEAP LABOR WILL BE USED TO REPLACE DOCTORS AND ENGINEERS FROM OHTER PARTS OF THE GLOBE. EVEN LOCALLY IF MORE PEOPLE GO INTO THOSE FIELDS THEIR LABOR CAN BECOME CHEAP. LAW OF SUPPLY AND DEMAND DETERMINES WAGES. YOUR BEST ASSET IS YOUR MIND NOT A PAPER FROM ANY COLLEGE.

  • haha you are all suckers. I graduated with a master degree--no loan. I was intelligent enough to make good money while going to college. You were suckers before and you are suckers again. Why are people so readily willing to admit that they are stupid? Join the people protesting on wall street, all of them saying "I am stupid when it comes to money!"

  • @philosophergenius I graduated from Oakland Community College out of pocket because my mom told me that it is not best the idea to take out a loan. Thank god I did not take a loan. I am going start at University during the summer with a major in film productions in hopes owning my production company or working at film studio. When I start I will not take out a loan.

  • Bastards. Colleges are corporations, simple as that. They could care less about your individual needs. It's all about their ratings, and money. Screw them! I'm just about finished my first semester in college, and we're doing such trivial crap! We actually spent 2 and a half hours carving PUMPKINS!... What the hell?

I'm getting out of this system.

  • @Poncho151500. What are you majoring in?

  • @Videowatcher198 Graphic design.

  • @Poncho151500 Carving pumpkins? WTF??? O_e This isn't a college education! This is more mundane than when kids doodle on their desks in elementary school! You're right, now get the hell out of their! omg....

  • @TheSnowyice Urgh, tell me about it. It's insulting! And my classmates just sit there like it's perfectly fine or something. My teacher even scolded me for 'going through the pumpkin'. Screw that!

  • @Poncho151500. The reason why your fellow classmates think it is perfectly fine is because they have been brainwashed by the all of the pro college hype that's been shoved down their throats for so many years.

It looks like you're starting to see through the smokescreen of college being a bullet train to success, so am i.

  • @Videowatcher198 Then we're in this together! I'm working to get out of it, the trouble is convincing my parents, but I'm working on that too. We have all the resources we need right here on the internet, and for free! I'll bet we could learn everything much more effectively, and in a fraction of the time, instead of wasting our time and money learning useless facts that we'll never actually need.

  • @Poncho151500. College still has a place regarding the medical field but most of the stuff taught in college, people can learn by themselves.

  • all their majors are shit, lol get a science or math degree engineering law accounting med all ill pay off in the long run
