I thought this was a stupid way of writing Esther Rolle out of the show. They had just lost John Amos, and now they are marrying Florida character out of the show. So many loose ends were left.....Why was Carl not mentioned as being dead when Florida returned? Carl's business was sold but no money given to Florida? Terrible ending for Esther .

OH THANK YOU VIDEO VIXEN. i always wondered the same thing myself. i knew they never mentioned him again. i wonder what the writers were thinking. or even the casting agents. after the fallout that happened with john amos, they should of knew better than to leave such a big whole in the plot. honestly though, i don't think they were expecting florida's character to come back.

The thing that makes me mad about the whole Carl and Florida "thing" is that they NEVER said anything about him after their wedding. She came back without him to move back in and attend Thelma's wedding. NO ONE made ANY mention of him. It was like he never existed.

I actually kind of liked Carl. He wasn't as great as James but I thought he was OK. Too bad the he was written off.

@trppey66 I liked him too. I saw him being a great replacement for James as the show's father figure. Perhaps if Esther Rolle stayed on the show then so would have Moses Gunn.
