This piggy-back idea is brilliant;but it looks dangerous.I'll bet they tested this in the wind tunnel a million times to get it right.I noticed they attached a cover over the rear of the shuttle to direct airflow to the tail of the jet.Awesome flying!..
I remember going to Ellington when the shuttle was shown off before they ever got it into space when my 2 oldest kids were babies. I took pics. I hope I still have them. I think that was in '79 or '80. You sure get a great feeling at how huge it is when you are up by it. 1 belongs to H.town NOT NY!! Saw airshows as a teen having been in the Civil Air Patrol. I loved it. Did our encampments there also. Marched all over. Those were great times. Flew in a Cessna for my first plane ride in Conroe.
@diesel54x Yes, of course. You always takeoff and land into wind, when you have a choice. The runway facing the wind is always the active runway at an airport, with some notable exceptions.
How much anyone wants to bet that half the dislikes are people from new york.... that's BULLSHIT what happened with the space shuttle... We were robbed of what's ours

nasa should be shut down...the shuttle, while a nice toy, was too expensive and delivered on not ONE SINGLE promise...btw...my girlfriend has a nice tight cockpit.
@420TheEmperor I'm not sure it should be shut down but it should probably be gutted and much of it privatised. NASA has produced a great deal of scientific contributions but currently it is no longer near as relevant for the reasons that it was really initially founded during the cold war, especially given the current state of the economy. Most NASA projects were peaceful scientific endeavours which involved the development or use of technologies that could have defence applications.
I wanna see that! I was just at Kennedy Space Center two weeks ago and they were prepping the Discovery shuttle I think to launch next month. I wish we coulda seen it on the launch pad or something. That'd have been cool
if you go to Wikipedia and look at Boeing 747 youll see there that NASA uses the Boeing 747 as a transport aircraft for the space shuttles along with NASA so does the u.s. air force use it for same purpose as transport just moded to handle the extra weight or whatever they require. So no its not a antonov 225.
@AMMW77 The antonov was used for the Russian Shuttle, its not ever used by Americans because its UKRANIAN, Its their plane, they use it. now its used for cargo.
@Rabbo4U Russian lovers... It's no Antonov. The Antonov has six engines, the wings are mounted on the top of the fuselage, and it has no central vertical stabalizer, discounting the obvious fuselage shape of the 747.
thank you for sharing a great moment in life and the history of both the aviation and nasa administration. I had the privilage to see this in Northern Vrginia just prior to the maiden launch of the shuttle space program!!! AWESOME!!
stupid. i watch this video about a 747 carrying a shuttle and they show 6 minutes of a jet taxiing around the runway and people talking. Edit that pointless shit out and give us video of what we actually want to watch.
@mrs9000 Stop talking nonsense. Shuttle is a big deal. Orbiter on a SCA is a big deal. Fools who think Area 51 is secret (it's the well known USAF Groomlake, no aliens) are not a big deal. These orbiters really go into space and your disrespect reflects very badly on your state of mind.

@EndeavourLaunch They were planning on ending it before that happened. Expendable rockets are cheaper and more effecient in the short and long run than complex spaceplanes. This is part of why the Russians never went ahead with their 'Buran' (besides the obvious budget problems they had). They had a variety of well tested and reliable rockets that have fulfilled every necessary task, and the rest of the world (Europe, China, India, etc.) has followed the Russian model.
