Thank you so much! I absolutely love you channel. I'm only responding to this video because of what DavidGrace said otherwise I would have replied in the fry scream video. I love this, I'm a girl and it's helped so much despite my nonexistent testosterone level :P But please make a video on how to form words while Fry screaming because I was able to create pitch but it would get high each time I tried to for words. Please and thank you! <3
Well, one comment but you may have heard about that since the vid is old. 'Feel your ribs expand', is the worst way to initiate someone on diaphragmatic breading. Also, you are using your chest in this particular vid. No flaming, just commenting coz for someone who knows, it ruins your otherwise perfect vid. :)
@DivineScream101 oh wow big person calling me a retard over the internet, yes i realize i messed up on my wording but i was just basically stating to NOT DRINK COLD WATER
@DivineScream101 Uh. He's right dude. Your not supposed to drink cold water when screaming. Or hot water., Room temperature is the water you should drink. Too cold tightens the vocal chords and too warm loosens them too much and your screams and growls come out bad. Of course you have to drink water but make sure its room temp.
Hey,I posted a vid above (female metal vocals) I just want to know if there is any advice you guys can give me in order to get better at this(& soon, lol)?
I'm soon to be in a nu-metal/death metal/alternative band & I would love to be the singer rather then just the guitarist.
i have a little problem, when i try to scream it feels like the scream is blocked somewhere and it just wouldn't come out, what should i do to solve that?
@thsuxandirock i have the same problem sometimes like it sounds muffled and it just cant break through.. what i did was try pushing harder and raise tour scream to a slightly higher part in your throat.
@thsuxandirock Yeah try drinking homogenized milk, the fat in it helps :3
And yeah, start a LITTLE higher but make sure not to hurt yourself, you'll be able to work your way lower down with practice (and no that was not meant in a suggestive manner)
dude, if you jut get the right techniqe it shoudn't hurt a bit, if it hurts in your throat, your doing it wrong and may destroy your throat and your vocals chords 4 life
ok so when i do lows they hurt a lil tiny tingling pain in my thorat i am useing my diaphagram (sorry spelling) and i drink shitloads of water can someone help me out
So if false chord screaming hurts at first, its not a bad thing? Because I tried it and I think I have the hang of it but it hurts a little, and I don't want to mess anything up.
@natpink25 start with a sigh, then a huge sigh, like when someones really fuckin just done with the day they go "uuuugghhhhh i have so much to do" or whatever that vibration you feel in your throat is your false chords goin that's the basis of it right there
Actually, that sore throat comment, isn't entirely right. You should feel a sore throat the first couple of times you do it. But that is only cos 9 times out of 10, people dont get it for their first while. But once you do it correctly, there should be no pain whatsoever, and as long as you drink a swig of water between songs, you will be fine, and you will never feel pain.
I know people keep asking of it "damages" your throat... But is it supposed to actually be kind of painful. Well not painful, but is it suposed to feel kind of tingley and uncomfortable?? Or are you not supposed to feel anything like that at all??
@attatchedtoanipodx You are meant to feel like a gurgling feeling below your adams apple for lows, like down in that little hole at the bottom of your neck, and a rather airy sort of feeling above you adams apple, almost pushing against the roof of your mouth for highs. Depending on the style of high it may feel slightly different. For me i have quite a crackly feeling, cos my highs are very gurgly. BUT you should not feel uncomfortable in ANY way...good luck!
@attatchedtoanipodx Well when I was very first starting highs, I would get a tingly feeling, and it would hurt after like 7 or 8 minutes of practicing. After a while, I realized that I was pushing too hard, so I just relaxed as much as possible, let it flow out and tried to keep everything in my throat as loose as possible. (Btw, try not to keep "Tight" in your head, cause you will unconciously tighten your vocal cords) And I let it flow out, pushing from my diaphragm and air from my stomach.
i have a question it doesnt lik hurt your vocal chords or anything right? Like, it doesnt damage them? because I do these screams a lot and i am wondering if it damages my throat. can u answer this?
Yea this guy has it like half way right but it should never hurt. When doing lows I shove my voice box way the fuck down do a normal scream but just a lil different my lows started to not hurt and sounded a lot better it takes some practice tho. But it should never hurt
@TheERiksir thats not fry either, that is death chord. false chord is pushing air and forcing it out while trying to hold your breath, vocal fry sounds like a gay terodactyl (however the fuck you spell it) and death chord is the low rumble in the bottom of the throat, which this guy demonstrates when he starts barking or when you take a deep breath and sigh really heavily
telling people to just push can cause them to do it wrong and cause them to blow their voice. you need to explain to people that they need to use their false cords and not their true cords, and the difference between the two.
Also, stinging your throat, sore throat, thats all signs of doing it wrong..
You can especially tell at the end there when you try to do it low.
Sorry. but this video is idiocy. You're going to make people hurt their voice.
@whenallelsefa1ls i agree with the fact that he needs to tell to use false chords... but the guy is right, when you scream like this its going to give you a raspy throat.. its not a bad thing like you say whenallelsefa1ls. The more you do it the more you throat will produce scar tissue so you wont get a raspy voice later on down the line.
trying to breath and push from my diaphragm but i'm just letting out to much air, and when i try to let less i can't get any growl sound at all, can only hold a growl for about 6 seconds =/
Hey man, this video helped a bunch. And the way I've been practicing scream is by using the false chord method.. But like after practicing the scream for like about 5 or 7 minutes, my chords get that scratchy feeling you talked about. I understand that happens. But I always hear "If it hurts you're doing it wrong". It doesn't hurt me, only after a while. With practice, does it begin to hurt less and less over time of practice? Thanks
i still have some troubles with the breathing .. i try to push from the diaprahm but i let to much air out to get a ''growl'' sound , if i let less air out it sounds like a grasping whisper or something..
i had the same problem, u just have to practice at first i was only able to hold it for a few seconds but after a week of practice i was able to do it for ten seconds and more
@95eriksp the key is to keep the diaphragm expanded even when you exhaled the air in your lungs. This method is called "the reserve tank" also try "sipping air".....just like when you talk you don't take giant breaths of air...you take small ones...it has a lot to do with mind control as well. I learned this from the DVD "The Zen of Screaming" Melissa Cross is a vocal instructor....but for screamers...she changed my whole method for the better :)...plus she shows you how to breath
dude im not trying to be disrespectful. i dont know you. but for a second there you sounded like the principal when he was nailing forest gumps mom. E E E
Hiya! I've got a question, the soar throat thingy doesnt bother me anymore so i can pretty much go for like 1-2 hours without feeling anything BUT! i have a problem, i cant get that fine distortion down, after a while it gets kinda bubbly if you get my point? I have no clue whatsoever what it might be, is it because i'm new and need to work up my stamina? (i've only growled for like some 1 month,)
@SuperSandstrom i believe your doing it right, keep practicing so its more clear. that gargling sound is your vocal cords smacking into eachother which is house you make your false vocals work
@FOTBcriminal You might need to learn to control the air flow a bit better, or maybe you need to be pushing the air out from lower in your belly area. Or if you're new to it, you might just need to practice it more.
I never been able to scream before. Yesterday, I was sitting on a bench in the park, tossing crumbs from my sandwich to the pigeons ( ooh, those godawful pigeons!). I was about to put the last bite in my mouth and one of those filthy, horrible birds flew in front of my face and just HOVERED there, wings fap-fap-fapping, and the eyes, oh god, the eyes! I was a picture of mute horror. I wanted to scream, but I didn't know how. It was awful.Thank you, thank you!
ok guy i just going to tell you something: if its hurts i dont care if it is a little bit you dont doing it well ok? remember if it hurts i dont doing it well
Um yeah i'm learning how to 'false chord' scream properly......this isn't 'false chord' screaming. He got the 'death' part right. It is death, its just what hes referring to as 'false chord' is wrong. 'False chord' is a pitched scream, like you can almost hear a note in it. 'Death' has no discernible pitch in it. Good job though, its a good tutorial, i'm just clarifying. The whole video is a tutorial on 'death' screaming. Not 'false chord'.
@s7r337y Your trying to hard, breath in to your stomach, push up towards your throat, out your mouth, and tighten chords just a bit. How to tighten throat, just pretend your being gagged and do it a bit less than that.
@s7r337y You should have the back of your throat open, the air flow coming through the back of your throat, if you put your fingers on your neck while you are to the scream (at least for death growling and lower screaming, not so sure about the higher ones), you should feel the vibrations in the back of your throat, and high up. Basically just exhale from your diaphragm, directing the are flow through the back of your throat, then tighten your vocal chords. I hope that made sense and helps you.
@SpaafBFLskater Yes, look at Louis Armstrong. Haha you think im stupid now right? Well its true, he uses what we call a 'false chord' scream. It wasn't used for metal back then though, because, they didnt have metal haha. Anyways, what this guy in this video calls 'false chord', IS NOT 'false chord'. Its still a 'death' scream, its just higher. He doesn't know the difference between 'false chord' and 'death'.
"death is "OOO" false is "AAA" lol dude you helped meeee out soooooooooo much i was clueless before this. its guys like you that arent afraid to look a little rediculous that are just awesome.

"death is "OOO" false is "AAA" lol dude you helped meeee out soooooooooo much i was clueless before this. its guys like you that arent afraid to look a little rediculous that are just awesome.
so yeah, i tried screaming today and i couldnt do it too loudly cuz im quite shy and my family was just outside my bedroom door basically, but if i do it louder with more voice will it sound better?.
No. You use your false vocal chords instead of your usuall to create the distortion. In that way you don't hurt your vocal chords, but it still sounds brütal! :)
It may still feel uncomfortable - screaming is hard on your vocal cords regardless - what we go for is really just minimizing the stress on the cords.
The point of proper breath support is to allow you to relax your throat/neck/jaw muscles and take the strain off your vocal cords. Tight throat and neck = ouchy vocal cords.
no, ur probably pulling ur chords the wrong direction its only normal to hurt the throat, by jammin out 4 extensive periods of time..but it should just be a lil horse
Short and good. Thats the way I do it.
Check out my Suicide Silence Cover.

@oldspice420 Ye kinda, like a bad scream O_o when the distortion aint gettin fine, it's like slowed down :<
SuperSandstrom 1 year ago
@SuperSandstrom i believe your doing it right, keep practicing so its more clear. that gargling sound is your vocal cords smacking into eachother which is house you make your false vocals work

FOTBcriminal 1 year ago
@FOTBcriminal I dunno for sure but maybe you're using too much air. If you know what I mean...
Virtuoosi6 1 year ago

It was awful.Thank you, thank you!

ok guy i just going to tell you something: if its hurts i dont care if it is a little bit you dont doing it well ok? remember if it hurts i dont doing it well
shaolinmonk1991 1 year ago
Um yeah i'm learning how to 'false chord' scream properly......this isn't 'false chord' screaming. He got the 'death' part right. It is death, its just what hes referring to as 'false chord' is wrong. 'False chord' is a pitched scream, like you can almost hear a note in it. 'Death' has no discernible pitch in it. Good job though, its a good tutorial, i'm just clarifying. The whole video is a tutorial on 'death' screaming. Not 'false chord'.

i cant really get that dog barking or cookie monster whatever the fuck sound...its like when i try to do it, it hurts my throat...help?
s7r337y 1 year ago
@s7r337y Your trying to hard, breath in to your stomach, push up towards your throat, out your mouth, and tighten chords just a bit. How to tighten throat, just pretend your being gagged and do it a bit less than that.
AeixRoxas 1 year ago
@s7r337y You should have the back of your throat open, the air flow coming through the back of your throat, if you put your fingers on your neck while you are to the scream (at least for death growling and lower screaming, not so sure about the higher ones), you should feel the vibrations in the back of your throat, and high up. Basically just exhale from your diaphragm, directing the are flow through the back of your throat, then tighten your vocal chords. I hope that made sense and helps you.

Just wondering.. can you sing or just hold a clean note after a fals chord scream?
SpaafBFLskater 1 year ago
@SpaafBFLskater yes you can easily the scream shouldent effect your singing unless you blow your vocals
musicislife9225 1 year ago
@SpaafBFLskater Yes, look at Louis Armstrong. Haha you think im stupid now right? Well its true, he uses what we call a 'false chord' scream. It wasn't used for metal back then though, because, they didnt have metal haha. Anyways, what this guy in this video calls 'false chord', IS NOT 'false chord'. Its still a 'death' scream, its just higher. He doesn't know the difference between 'false chord' and 'death'.
Sraaron08 1 year ago
@Sraaron08 Okay, well if heard a lot of different theories now..
But What is the correct way to do a false chord scream?
And Why is it different to a high death (growl) scream?
And why does my throat still hurts after trying that scream and It doesn't when I'm doing fry screams?
And wtf xD Louis Armstrong, I dont see the connection.

Why do you constrict your body? That's bad for your larynx. Also decreases maximum lung capacity. You also turn sideways and it's funny.

is it supposed to hurt your throat ??
TheKickassRadio 2 years ago
No. You use your false vocal chords instead of your usuall to create the distortion. In that way you don't hurt your vocal chords, but it still sounds brütal! :)
NFMCGorsa 2 years ago
It may still feel uncomfortable - screaming is hard on your vocal cords regardless - what we go for is really just minimizing the stress on the cords.
The point of proper breath support is to allow you to relax your throat/neck/jaw muscles and take the strain off your vocal cords. Tight throat and neck = ouchy vocal cords.
PsychoLemur42 2 years ago
luke warm water. because cold water shocks ur vocal chords and if u try to sing normally, ul sound like dick.
downfallbandofficial 2 years ago
actually, death is low, and FRY is high, none of those were false chords, false chord is more of a personified middle ground

is it supposed to hurt your throat at first?...
SwizzleGoesRAWR 2 years ago
It may be a little uncomfortable, but there shouldn't be any pain.
jsvitak 2 years ago
no, ur probably pulling ur chords the wrong direction its only normal to hurt the throat, by jammin out 4 extensive periods of time..but it should just be a lil horse

1. You can mess up your vocal chords causing surgery.
2. You might have eternal bleeding from your throat if you dont use your diaprham.
