sorry I forgot to say that the song "good Vibration was the one that I was commenting about.. I love star trek and this video was well done. Good going.
. The song took over 2 months to record, Glen Campbell played lead guitar, and the beach boys just provided the vocals later. The cost was $40K because of the time it took to record it.
@hatmanmedia You misunderstood me. On the recording "Good Vibrations" Paul Tanner (not an original member) played an electro-theremin (invented by Bob Whitsell in 1958) which is a whole different instrument than the original theremin. In the music video a young Michael Edward "Mike" Love can be seen playing the Moog ribbon controller, an instrument developed for the Beach Boys in the 1960's for use on live performances.
@hatmanmedia The original theremin is a heterodyning based instrument and the electro-theremin is a synthesizer based instrument. They are two very different instruments!
it wasn't a Theremin in "Good Vibrations". There's a difference between a Theremin and a Tannerin. You'll notice the large difference by the videos of Good Vibrations performed live.
Yeah because the first thing you do when you get teleported is walk over to your theremin and play the star trek theme song, then immediately teleport out.
in 1938, Theremin was kidnapped by the KGB and taken back to Russia was forced by the KGB to created the first "bug" eavesdropping which was planted in the U.S embassy from 1945 and was not discovered till 1952.
@sirnathanator just by numbers alone Trek boasts 5 live action shows, an animated series, and 11 movies...Star Wars has 3 good films, 3 crappy ones, and a holiday special that should remain unnamed...unless you want to count the ewok movies too...but if that's the case The Muppets Take Manhattan is a Star Wars Movie too...But I'll be a sport about the great Trek/Wars battle...Watch Shatner honor Lucas here on youtube it's hillarious.
Second, Wikipedia states that it is an "electro-theremin," which is different.
"The instrument features a tone and portamento similar to that of the theremin (or thereminvox), but with a different control mechanism. The Tannerin doesn't actually sound much like the theremins of the time, and people who have heard both can easily tell them apart." It's a Tannerin, not a Theremin. End of story.
@foxkieran The awkward term "Tannerin" is a recent contrivance, attempting to combine Paul Tanner's name with the eponymous name "theremin." I think it is impolite; why not let Tanner's invention be remembered for its own merits? The name "electro-theremin" is confusing, implying that there are such things as "acoustic theremins." It was originally called "Paul's Box." Paul Tanner enlisted the efforts of Bob Whitsell to build it.
Wow, that's nerd on a whole new level right there. Impressive, I bet you have that set built somewhere in your house don't you? I bet you've never missed a convention either.
Good vibrations uses a tannerin, not a theremin; they sound identical, but the tannerin is far easier to play. Plus, you have to touch it, so where's the fun?
I think this is a great, fun idea, well produced... but the actual theme was horribly sharp the whole time. I know theremins are really hard to find pitch on, but ugh. I couldn't stop cringing. :(
@wingsonwater Well, I have to agree to some point. A professional Thereminist would've played it better, yeah, but it wasn't bad. The way he produced the rest of the vid is pretty cool you have to admit...beaming in and out, I got a lick out of it.
A trekkie, playing on theremin the Star Trek original series main title, whit a Spock costume (pointy ears included) ... apearing whit the Enterprise teletransport effect...
this has to be one of the best fan videos ever! you even got the green screen camera angle & your markers right. the theremin playing was spirited too. everything about this video works as a whole & makes total sense.
Except that was the end credits. Of course i am just giving you a hard time, from one theremin player to another, fantastic job! It is an extremely difficult instrument to play that well.

@SLagerZahne That's not a lie. That's probably the most famous Theremin riff there is.
Of course, it was used before that, but not really for mainstream music.
It's used quite often for alien films.
