the render is taller than the actual guy, and I think the program is compensating by making the render stoop a bit to account for the height difference.

Hi, I've got a question... It looks like it can capture rotation and position of all the body parts relative to the hip, but what about body movement in the space? Can this technique track body positions relative to a "zero" point in a virtual space? tnx
@deimos2k6 that's the easy part. to track your motion relative to the zero point all you need to do is have a microphone sitting on a table instead of your backpack.
I can see a lot of benefits using this system especially the ability to wear clothing over the suit like Armour and as they shown tight and exterior areas. If I was to choose this or traditional optical motion capture n a studio I would go for the old as it looks smoother and more responsive. Although studios are expensive to hire and a small specialised team is required to operate an optical system.
some games like mgs had real life soldiers to use i think in tom clancy's games to like the moves and stuff they where so that it would be in real life to ghost recon is also realistic
guys, I couldn't find any email or website I could reach one of these guys... in the pdf is a lot of names listed, but no contact adress... help me out, I would like ot contact someone from swizerland...
It's not a question of art. Nobody can animate hours of film in time without the help of a system like this. I would spend 5 years doing it alone if I get finance, but market doesn't work this way.
Apparently the only problem is that the root motion (COM) isn't captured since the system can't tell where it is within absolute space coordinates. Perhaps a combination of different methods would allow this system to eventually surpass 'traditional' MoCap.
To be able to capture MoCap data directly from a live set would prove invaluable indeed.
haha not, this is much more usefull, now you can capture driving, cycling etc. all the hard stuff.. that you cant do with your traditional 'methods', positioning in room is not a problem at all..
I think you didn't understand what I mean. This system seems great for cycles done in one spot, but what about moving and dancing about?
You can tell this especially from the ping-pong test. Watch how the character stays put on his own centre of mass. Unless the devs have done this on purpose, this seems to be the systems biggest limitation.
I'm not saying this is a bad system, but combining old and new tends to yield to better results.
You could probably position extra ultrasonic transmitters around the set beforehand as markers. You could use as many as you needed, so the wearer would always be in range of 2 or 3 of them. Just measure the actual distance and angle between them and match them to your virtual set.
Yes, that's exactly what I was thinking about actually. Use whichever system that would me more efficient to triangulate the absolute position of the actor within a perimeter and then you could capture COM data.
For a motion capture device that only costs $3k, this is great. It will help tons of indie game studios who are looking for an affordable alternative to motion capturing studios. Also makes a more portable device for motion capturing outside the studio. Also by investing a little time and a little more money, I'm sure the drift could be compensated for. As (hopefully) a future programmer in the game development industry, I am very excited about this.
It's not up to optical standards, but for $3000 it's impressive. It looks as good as or better than magnetic motion capture which used to retail for over $30k. They still have some work to do to deal with drift. Manually animating drift out would be very time consuming. Also notice how the arms are not very accurate on the Lat pulldown machine. But again, for their first release, I'm impressed. I look forward to see how they develop over time!
Except commercial systems require cameras to capture the motion. Hence the statement "this system is completely autonomous." You don't need a mo-cap studio with this, you just need a guy in a suit.
Hell, if they can make it water-proof, this would be a great way to study Olympic swimmers.
Have a link? Intersense's website only lists single motion sensing modules, like that found in the Wii controller. And none of them look like anything you could wear around, given that each module is about the size of a fist.
Where's a link to the paper? This is one of the benefits of academia- progress outside of academia itself. This is friggin awesome. Is there one of these as an add on for the wii yet?
Ok I found the paper to go with this vide, it documents the items that was used to build this hybrid mocap suite. Do you think a video tutorial will be made on how to build this mocap portable suite?

Kudos. Really innovative and cost effective. I bet gaming studios will be banging down the door to get this.
There seems to be a bit of lag but I suppose thats to be expected from a system that uses sound.

they would also need to recalibrate it because sounds move differently in water. Also they may need to use different microphones and speakers.
Tordre 4 years ago 2
Not true. Intersense makes this exact product, using accelerometers and ultrasound to correct for drift.

hackcess 4 years ago 2
This is for parts, to put it together, unless by yourself, would cost a bit more, in theory.
rockerBOO 4 years ago
That's 100% false. The method of point capture is wholly different (sonic vs. optics). Plus, full vicon systems cost about 100k.
Magnesious 4 years ago 3
Not true at all. Go look at Intersense's website; they use this exact method (accelerometers + ultrasound to correct for drift).
I hope they cited it in any academic references.
