The small and ancient chapel of St Mary of the Angels of the Little Portion (Porziuncola in Italian) was repaired by St. Francis around 1206 at the beginning of his Order of Poor Brothers (Friars Minors refers to that). The are 19th century paintings on the front by a German artist and an ancient wooden-backed painting behind the altar. The large basilica was built in the late 1500s and early 1600s to accomodate the many pilgrims and visitors. This was the first Franciscan "headquarters".
