  • His sax player was killer...

  • a legitimately hauntingly beautiful song

  • @RachelMCohen hmmmmm, Yes, Haunting sound , I agree !! Great Melody, and chord progression

  • wow!!!

  • I think the plaid pants and the sax player's fingernails kind of detract from the moment . .

  • @ndh5440 Back then those were considered HOT! Go figure.

  • LOVE IT

  • Now he's Singing in Heaven!!!

    RIP Dennis!!!

  • Now that's music!

  • i love this song, it has many memories for me i was 18 years old in 1967 just graduated from high school life was great.

  • it's still a sad song...i have a keepsake box with momentos from my first boyfriend...

  • Another quality hit from a time when singers didn't have to have perfect teeth and looks but had ten times the soul of the prepackaged pop stars of today. May we never forget Dennis Yost.

  • his voice was a smooth as silk!

  • If I have to choose, this the sad love song out of the 70's by a male singer/ group.

With Dennis' mellow and one of a kind voice. Mr Yost, rest in peace, yours song would linger forever. " All Over the World" by Miss Francoise Hardy is the other, check it out.

  • A great song. Dennis Yost went on to be the lead singer of the Atlanta Rythym Section whose version of Spooky is pretty damn good too.

  • I love this song. I got to do the Sax solo in Jazz band at the basketball homecoming. It's a beautiful song

  • Whoa, what the hell! I heard this song as a 12-year old listening to an oldies station in the early '80's--always liked this song, but could NEVER remember who the heck sang it--I'm saying "Whoa" because I always thought the singer was black! So this are the same guys who did "Spooky!" Cool!

  • @statelybird3 How many times we make that same mistake....great is great is great....enjoy...☺...

  • jfk?

  • Dennis Yost & the Classics 4, April, 1969, W.Linn, Oregon. He helped me fall in love where I shouldn't have, but hey, what the hey, can't blame the guy!

  • Makes me want to think about getting back together again with my ex. Military marriages are hard to hold together.

  • I LOVE THIS SONG...

  • traces of talent lost forever. I miss the 60's and 70's when I was young and used music to relate to life's harsh reality. It sucks but music makes it tolerable.

  • @ayame170 I'm with you all the way on this , I agree !! Wonderful melody. I'm 57 , professional guitarist , and I would need to drive long hours, and I heard this song done as an instrumental on nylon string guitar. Sad song , which brings back many memories !!

  • OOOOOOHHHHH Dennis! RIP

    I HAVE ALL YOUR RECORDS.......

    You Are So Missed...........

  • this is a very beautiful song. Puts a lump in my throat. RIP Dennis

  • its okay but its past my time by like 40 years my grandma showed it to me

  • where was po-macs? I've lived in Houston my whole life and don't remember .well I was born in the 70's

  • @vstroud ---Hello vstroud, Po Mac's restaurant was located on the corner of Piney Point and the Katy Freeway (the in-bound side of I-10). The restaurant was opened in 1967 and closed in 1977. It was a local hang-out for school kids in the area. It shared a back fence with an elementary school and Memorial High School was one block away. It was a great time for me to "grow up" listening to all the local bands that played there (Billy Gibbons 1967-68) - the surf culture and much more.

  • What a great song and great memories.

  • I sing this when I'm at or hosting Karaoke. Great song.

  • @Darkeklaw thanks for the warning!

  • I was 9-years-old in 1967 when my dad opened a hamburger resturant in Houston called "Po-Mac's." I had the task of making sure that the jukebox was full of the top-100 45-RPM records each week. I went with my mom each week to Don's Record Store in Bellaire. The music of the Classics IV made a HUGE impression on me as a kid. I can CLEARLY remember all of there songs on the jukebox. Selection B2 on the jukebox was "Stormy" and C6 was "Spooky," but my favorite was B6 "Traces of Love."

  • @BigTex347

    your pretty old then aye?

  • @eldras Not too old I hope. I also remember Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top playing in my dad'sburger shop with his first band called "The Moving Sidewalks" from 1967 through 1968. The band would set up in one corner and they would play for free for the local kids in Houston. My brother ran into Billy Gibbons recently in LAX and asked him if he remembered playing in Po-Mac's in Houston. Billy said "Ya, is Bobby still cookin' a great burger?" I have great memories growing up in that burger shop.

  • @BigTex347 Comments like yours make comments worth reading!

  • @BigTex347 i bet you do, and no one can take them away from you....

  • @BigTex347 Yes, I agree ! Notice how "Spooky" and "Traces of Love" have the SAME beat, with the same synchopated rhythm of the guitar.

  • @BigTex347 I love this song also, reminds me of my ex husband, I still see old photographs and things that remind me of our good days

  • @BigTex347

Oh my god how beautiful that you remember all that. I love that B6 also though I wan't there to play it. It is my B6 on YT.

  • This in one white boy who stirs my soul.

  • @cocoagirl61660 then when you get out of jail you should check out more white boys, you may be surprised!

  • i always loved this group. I feel sad even though it's beautiful. RIP Dennis.......great music making.

  • Thanks Coco

  • LOVE ALL THE SONGS BY THE CLASSICS IV.. SAD SONG.. BUT SO TRUE AND WE HAVE ALL BEEN THERE.. IN THIS LIFE!!!

  • @scarypowers....Dennis passed away about 2 years ago, maybe 3 im not sure after he had fallen down and bumped his head which caused internal trauma apparently.....he died 6 months after his accident from complications, a freak accident i guess !

  • omg...one of my fav songs...big damn tears over this....memories past as well as present and future thoughts.....im the luckiest man in the world..traces of love...

  • This is when music was music. Singer could sing and song lyrics had meaning.

Timeless. I'm 46 BTW which means that I was only 4 yrs old when this was on the charts.

  • @dcrew2000 I'm 46 as well...and I miss this music, as well as those times in general. I think I may be suffering from "nostalgitis":~)

  • @dcrew2000 100% Agreed with you my friend...! That was real good music...!

  • Wow,what a gorgeous song and voice.Hearing this takes me back in Miami back in the early 70's as child playing this on a 45 record player with my parents.

  • preciosa canciòn sobre todo cuando ya nada funcina bien, es mejor terminar por lo sano

  • @Taharah007 Q-tips... look into them.

Eh, forget it and go listen to your fucking lady gaga CD's

  • Well named group... their songs actually did become classics long after their names are forgotten. This is one of the great modern 'lost love' songs.

Can you imagine being 14 years old in the summer just learning about teenage love and dancing at parties ? I can remember it like it was yesterday and it was priceless.

  • My cousin was driving me thru the lomg and winding freeways of LA then in 68 at night.. Wonderful feelings indeed!

  • consider earlier affairs, though bittersweet, as mere essays, something grander awaits

  • Wonderful song and memories!

  • Hey. I don't want to offend anyone, but who is this singing? It's amazing, but I honestly don't know this guy. Thanks.

  • His name is Dennis Yost...the band was The Classics IV! Great sixties band and Dennis had a great voice!

  • Ah, the ultimate break-up song! SOB! And where did this guy get those Soul Train pipes? AMAZING! This group just pumped out one fantastic hit after another. I had their "best of" on vinyl, but my older sister snitched it!

  • wow what happy memories this brings back!

  • Yes this is a lip sync which was popular at the time on tv appearances.

  • nice voice, but he's a face for radio LOL

  • "That didn't work out right" --Sometimes it is no one's fault. That is the hardest part and you never no why. You never really ever get "over it" --you just learn to live with it. Such a hard song to listen to --and yet you still listen all the way through.

  • @michaelZ1B very well said...

  • this is one of those timeless pieces that will sound just as great 100 years from now........Dennis had a great voice !...RIP !

  • @ronnied828 he passed away? when and how?

  • I love this song...I wasn't around when it came out but it's such a good song!

  • I WAS around and it still holds up! LOL

  • Espetacular, muito bom. Parabéns a quem colocou esse clip. Obrigado.

  • I have to come in from time to time to hear these words once again. A piece of musical history and memories that will never leave.

  • This is one of my remarkable songs ever had in the 6o's and boy i love it! reminiscense of the past escapades of my life. I remember edwin ocenar and jun siervo everytime i hear this beautiful song TRACES...

  • Beautiful song. RIP to Dennis Yost ( 12/2008).

You gave the world some beautiful music and I thank you.

  • muito linda esta musica... nao existem mais musicas desse jeito ... e uma pena

  • So Long Dennis Yost, you may be departed from this world, but you leave behind some memorable tunes like this, for that, you will always be remembered.

  • Is he lipsinking this?

  • Hey, no, it's just a poor quality video. Most of the singers back then sang their material live.

  • @caldragon7 Most definitly.

    1. Bands don't "fade out live" meaning the music does not drop out.

    2. Where is the full orchestra hiding.

    3. This era of time, sound mixers has 6 to 8 channels. That would not be enough for a band and orchestra.

    4. How is it we hear the sax solo with no microphone?

    5. Find the original, overlay it on this video and it will match perfectly.

Contrary to the other answer, technology was not there to do much live music.

I mix music for a living.

  • This is the hardest song to play on guitar there is ..I have been trying for 40 years and its still out of my reach ..at least 25 different chords ..no easy ones ..JR Cobb and Buddy Buie were genuises ...

  • Wow, they don't make songs like this anymore. Dennis Yost, wow incredible voice. Besides this & stormy, what are some of the great unheralded Classics IV tunes (besides spooky)?

  • Listen to another "Classics V" hit: "Everyday With You Girl." SUBPERB!

  • Ty Jsbach15, Dennis Yost's voice is right up there with Colin Blunstone & Jim Morrison, as being among the greatest of all time in Rock(In my opinion)

I hope he gets his overdue just due & gets entry in the Rock N' Roll hall of fame.

His voice never ceases to amaze me, and I was sad to hear of his passing,

  • we played this song for jazz band at school

    i had a tenor sax solo :D

  • ..Bobbi. *i should have never broken up with you. i have always loved you. and always will.

  • I close my eyes and say a prayer, that in his heart he'll find a trace of love still there somewhere. These love songs they truely do come from the heart, and soul. To love someone can hurt so much! :,(

  • Essa música é demais!!...

  • all these years later I still listen to Dennis Yost voice in awe. wow what a gift and thank you sir for sharing it with us

  • Too bad he passed away in 2007

  • RIP Dennis Yost. this song will live for years to come.

  • Great lyrics in the same vein as Smokey Robinson. I love this song.

  • Recuerdo como si fuera ayer esta pieza..estaba adolescente, Dios que recuerdos¡¡

  • One of my all time favorites.

  • Traces of hope in the night, that he'll come back and dry. these traces of tears from my eyes.

  • absolutely brilliant lyrics...Traces of hope

    In the night

That she'll come back and dry

    These traces of tears

    >From my heart....God bless his soul....

  • One of the greatest classics ever

  • One of the great songs done by one of the greatest rock bands in history. Dennis Yost And The Classics Four were sensational ! 'Traces" was perhaps their best slow song. This group belongs in THE ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME !

  • Wow! That song surely makes my heart skip a beat : (

  • great song from 1968 Llnda A

  • My family was stationed on Okinawa when this came out, so even though we got the music, we never knew what the artists looked like. Thanks for posting this...a great song from a wonderful music era.

  • They don't make them like that anymore!!

Saturday night out in my 1970 Chevelle SS and my girl. Great song!!!

  • Your right they don't make them like that anymore, but mine was a1969 Plymouth GTX !

  • Great car!! I always liked the 69 Roadrunner with the 383 magnum!!!

I'm building a 1970 SS Chevelle, maybe I can feel that need once again!!! And listen to the classics once again while burning the tires down.

  • por supuesto que escuchamos estos temas, saludos desde Vancouver Canada

  • The music kinda sounds like the song Stormy.....Huh?

  • I was just a child and loved it then , still sounds great

  • naturally it does, nothing can beat our music of the 50s,60s and 70s

  • Got my first car the summer between high school and colledge. Listened to the radio constantly. Six years later, when I got married, this song brought back fond memories. Now 35 years later (still married to the same bride) I can't listen to this song without my eyes tearing up. Thanks for over 40 years of memories. I just found out about Dennis death while reading these posts, Linda, we are sorry for your loss, Dennis was so much a part of our lives. THANKS!!!!

  • TMI........

  • Still love it...and him too...Thank you Linda. We love you too for sharing him with us!

  • I made a cool 60s playlist of the songs that really meant something and it was this kind of music that wasnt the huge name stars like the beatles, stones etc, that i liked the best.

  • Thank you, Linda for sharing your thoughts, as well. This was always my favorite Classics IV song, though "Spooky" and "Stormy" are the ones the oldies stations play (even though "Traces" actually charted the highest, making it to #2). Memories that will last forever.

  • Thank you for all the good words about Dennis.I loved him as my husband and am now really understanding what a gift he had. His voice was so beautiful and could show such emotion.I loved when he talked to me, too.I miss you so much,DY.Will love you forever.

    Mrs. Dennis(Linda) Yost

  • Linda, all I can say is, thank You for sharing him with us all.

    Larry

  • Traces was to only song Dennis predicted would be a HIT. He even put up $25,000 on future royalties to have REAL strings. (The string section of the Atlanta Symphony)I'm so glad he did, even if he didn't recoup the royalties he was supposed to over the years.

    Thank you, Larry.

  • I love Dennis. He's a real classic. Traces is a song that brings back old precious memories back when in yesteryears.

My friends love his songs. Kudos to HIM.

  • Just found out that we have lost this wonderful and unique voice. I am very sad. His songs meant so much to me when I was growing up in Boston. Lots of memories. I am sure your warm memories of Mr. Yost will overcome your sadness some day. What a gift he left for us all. Thank you, Dennis.

    Mark IN New Hampshire.

  • Thank you, Mark in New Hampshire.I used to tell Dennis what his music meant to others, but he was so humble.I don't think, until he passed the difference myself.Keep the memories, and keep the music playing!

    Mrs.Dennis(Linda)Yost

  • Thanks for the extra info about the song and Dennis. I know how hard it must be to think about it. Just rest assured that Dennis and the guys gave us so many memories and he will always be here in his music. God Bless

  • ...my all-time favorite song. I really love this song, I don't know why. God bless you Dennis Yost.

  • had no idea jfk could sing like this.

  • Dennis had one of the best voices out there, and his songs hold a lot of sweet memories for me all these years later. I was so sorry to hear that he had died, always wondered why he hadn't been recording for so long. He along with the Classics IV will always be among my absolute favorites.

  • burst to tear after read Dennis past away !

    sigh

  • I have the 45 of Stormy & hubby has some records & cds of him. So sorry to hear about him & so sad how his later yrs were with him being sick & not being able to use the Classics IV name. I found some nice videos of him on YouTube awhile back. 1 was of him doing either Spooky or Stormy & the others were of him doing some country stuff. I can't find those on here now & I'd sure love to see them again. Rip, you'll be missed.

  • Thanks Dennis for always making us feel romantic with your music!!!!! We will always remember you!!!!! May you rest in peace!!!!!!

  • @qbanmanny3 Very true!

  • A great singer. Condolences to his family and friends.

  • Its unfortunate, that the simplist things in life, come back to haunt us, as the most we most cherished as we got older and wanted back....good bless Dennis and his family, my heart is with you all...

  • What a great musician, icon of a generation that really seemed to care........god bless his family, you don't know how many times his songs and the Classics 4 made me happy and sad....at the most important times,
