Just an idea: Make the buckets with a smaller amount of rice, beans etc. BUT put some of each into a bucket. So instead of opening a huge thing of beans that goes bad before you reach the bottom, you open a month (estimate) of supplies in a bucket, instead of opening 5 buckets to get a little of each supply. I hope that makes sense. Great vids!
@teaglet I use my hair flattening iron but most people do use an iron. They'll just use a piece of board (2x4) to lay the mylar bag top across and then iron as you would a shirt. Depending on the type of food and how well it's packaged and the environment it's kept in (temperature), it can last up to 30 years. Sugar will last indefinitely but do NOT use Oxygen Absorbers w/sugar or you'll end up with a BRICK of sugar. It'll still be good but it'll be a pain in the arse...
I am very interested in storing food to last years. How has the buckets lasted? Where can someone find the oxygen absorbers? Thanks for the video, keep it up!
lol, is that a food grade construction level? did you buy the bucket from a food grade store? sealed at the factory? with its own lid? or did they stack the buckets in a dustry dirty warehouse, with the lids stacked seperate? lol
just wash the dang bucket, and use the mylar. you are doing it right.
love your video! If you want cornmeal stored in this fashion use holcome prolific in the whole kernel form.Seeds are hard to come by. holcome prolfic makes the best corn bread in the world plus has a good sized real soft cob for stricking purposes.
Anyway thanks for the video, I learned some thing new..You really put a lot of research and energy into this..It's a science..Thanks again, very helpful!
My mom is dead now, would have been 84 if alive, and she raised us on canned preserved home made everything. She even made noodles, and worked full time. We would glean corn from a friends farm, one time mom bought a whole lot of chickens from a local farmer. he killed them, and we plucked gutted them, my mom canned those boilers. She canned venison, and froze fresh fish using old paper wax milk cartons, cleaned and put the fish filled it with water and froze them. The fish never tasted stale!
It's not baking soda, that goes bad, it's the baking powder that goes bad. Not only does it not, do the job it's suppose to, it actually spoils the taste of the food you are making when you use old or bad baking powder. I learned that the hard way, and my mother was the one who told me that I had to had used expired or old, almost expired baking powder. She knew, we were raised on baking powder biscuits, and all kinds of stuff. Make from Scratch is cheaper, better more practical than bisquick.

i would never eat 40 lbs. of beans all at once. i think on bulk items like beans and rice i would rather use the 1 gallon size bags. it looks like you could fit 4 maybe 5 of them in a bucket safely. just take them out as you need them. in smaller size bags they could also be used as barter items. i dont drink but i have been buying cheap wine and whiskey when i catch it on sale. a gallon of gas for a bottle of hooch? it would give me options. also a anesthetic if desperate for one
Forgive me if I am overlooking something. But, could it be that the bags seem too large because you aren't filling them to capacity?
Those are 5 gallon buckets and the finished product looks to be only taking up 3 gallons volume at most. If you actually fill the bags to the proper level they will probably be perfect for the job.
help support eastcoastpreppers efforts to give relief to those suffering from storm damage! come on! you know the government can't do anything right. let's help each other.... remember Katrina!
When I worked in food processing, ingredients came in in a huge variety of buckets, drums, bags & all the products we made with them always got the ok for sale.
Example: mango paste came sealed in a giant mylar bag & placed in a steel 55 gallon drum. The drum wasn't lined with a plastic coating or anything, it was just painted steel. Glucose would come in one of those big blue plastic 55 gallon drums. Grape seed oil would come in a 55 gallon drum that was a thin plastic lining on the inside.
Glad to see this video. Now, I would probably opt for the gallon size and store a few in a bucket instead of the full bucket size. My luck, I'd also be out of oxy absorbers and electricity, so I would not be able to reseal the big ones.
@rockhardxrocker Yes its the same thing that comes in a pack of beef jerky or new shoes. If broken open and eaten. It is more than likely silica gel(at least i haven't come across any alternatives.)
@fubuwearer1 I wouldn't want to risk that stuff spilling into my food and making that entire barrel worthless.
An alternative, and many tupperware etc. have them nowadays, is a pump on top of the lid. So you seal it, then you just pump out the air. You could probably just get a big bucket like this, or make one.
You may have stated this(or possible someone in comments has as well.) These food stores need to be uncooked. Also if you plan on using this method you want to learn to cook these foods. I'm not sure, the traditional foods may have survived the generations better in the south.
Love all your videos. How many 1 gallon sealed mylar bags can you fit into a 5 gallon bucket and still be able to seal it? Five would be my first guess but never know. Never done this before, could you also show a video on sealing the mylar bags? Thanks.
i am prepping myself,,but have not gotten to the 5 gal storage yet....but in my mind if shtf why would you open a 40 lb bag of rice or beans all at once when your family can only eat a 1/4 to 1/2 lb at a meal...know you have to reseal why not make small er portions that can be eatin in a reasonable amount of time, without exposing the rest...luv your vids...
it doesn't matter if they are manufactured to food specs. they store all types of grain etc. in giant tin and iron grain bins everyday with rats etc. even long term, I say just keep it clean, dry, cool, out of light, and airless as best you can after you get it home. I think you did a fine job, thanks.
Just think. If all the 'preppers' would stiffen their backbones and reach down and grab their balls and organize politically and militarily they wouldn't have to prepare to return to the stone age.
It's time to stop hunkering down for the apocalypse and start thinking Normandy.

@waypasthadenough The problem there, though, is that preppers don't all fall into a single ideological group. Even if they did, how many do you think are out there, as a percentage of the United States population? How many others would be attracted to support a political party founded by them? I think your ideal is already out there in the tea party movement or the Libertarian party, and we may see some results as our current two-party trainwreck begins to come apart.
Maybe I'm making the mistake of assuming that most 'preppers,' a relatively new term on this front, are politically aware and Liberty minded. I'm sure there are exceptions. My point is they want us to sit home and wait our turn... and I'm not talking political parties. Don't understand? Follow my links. Read the quotes page first.

I want to do this with rice but it's so expensive. I've got to think bisquick would last atleast 2 yrs. One prepper guy is re-using mylar potato chip bags. Wonder if that works? Excellent video sir!
Kevin, First as much as i go to the places you go im surprised we dont run into eachother. Second, i have been thinking of doing this and now i know how but......can you tell me where you picked up the buckets, mylar and the O2 absorbers. I know you can get them online at places but yours came in great condition so i would like to use that company.
The O2 absorbers will not absorb all of the atmospheric content in the bag. Air is roughly 20% oxygen and 80% Nitrogen. Not to mention a vacuum will still leave small, trace amounts of O2 (too small for an absorber to work).
