i just wish people would make such a fuss every time a negligent company causes somebody to get killed - unfortunately consumers are too busy with compensation claims for replacable materialistic matters.
@hudson501 so you mean customers should just shut up and not complain because they might have an adverse effect on the company? Huh? Back to Business and Customer Service 101 for you.
The fact of the matter is that ANYONE can screw up, which United Airlines did when they damaged Dave Carroll's guitar. However, their really big mistake came in their dealings with Mr. Carroll afterward. They should have at least been a little more civil to him, rather than trying to brush him off at every opportunity.
Quote: "This is an exclusive... so I'll make sure you never fly first class again.. I know some people at United" What a fucking idiot.. who hired this moron at CBS? Threatening a guy that is clearly in the right on public tv just shows what a complete asshole this guy is.
I'm sure United basically doesn't want to set a precedent by paying him anything. Can you imagine everybody that had something broken, showing up and asking for a compensation? I'm sure those baggage handlers got a talk with their manager though.
I know what Dave means about it not being about the money. Guitars are precious to their owners. American Airlines once lost my guitar for a week when I flew from Edinburgh to Boston and it was eventually tracked down in Houston, Texas (?????) They told me that they would compensate me if it could not be recovered, but that would not have been the point. I love my guitar and I would be broken hearted if anything happened to it. They can't just be replaced as if nothing happened.
Word has it United Airlines stock dropped a lot after Daves video release and it was equivalent to a 10 million dollar loss in value on the NYSE. They should've just paid him the 3200.00 for a new Taylor. Obviously United acted in poor faith and Dave put things right via the internet. My Ovation guitar is in a Ovation hard shell case and it can take a beating. In Hawaii I saw it thrown 50 feet thru the air and no damage. I was lucky. Dave your song speaks for all of us.
just a little tip for "MeWatchy" capslock is not cruse control for cool, there is no need to get so bitchy over such a little thing, David Carrol is a professional musician and i'm sure he was using the right type of case, you missed the point entirely that united airlines baggage handlers mistreated and broke his very expensive guitar. also i'm Canadian so i don't have to put up with homeland invasion of privacy

Nobody ever asks if this guitar was in an ATA approved flight case. I'll bet it wasn't. That would make this his responsibility. You can't pack delicate items of any sort inside whatever you want and expect the airlines to be responsible for your things. Flight cases. They make them for all sorts of items. Pro musicians should know this.
he did, my parents are good friend with a musician that is very close to him... your assumption is really incorrect. He is a gigging musicians, he knows what he's at!
There's probably a legal disclaimer somewhere on airline tickets where they dodge responsibility for any damages to contents of any luggage. Flight cases have their limits. I would think you'd be better off to ship something as delicate as a multitrack with a service that specializes in shipping, rather than an airline.
No I'm not stupid. I'm a pro musician who's flown countless times. Airlines throw luggage, that's how they get it from one place to another, look out the window any time you fly and you'll see, for better or worse, that's pretty much standard operating procedure. Besides, instruments in flight cases can literally be thrown, or dropped from great distances. They're built like tanks. My strat case and D28 case could be run over by cars and survive.
You miss the point. Even though it may be "standard operating procedure" it shouldn't be. It shouldn't be regular operating procedure to chuck other peoples belongings.
I miss no point. The point is, and this is a FACT, WHETHER OR NOT anyone on YouTube likes it or disagrees, luggage handlers at EVERY airport in the world toss luggage, no matter what it is, tens of thousands of times a day, they do not hand it to each other gently to be placed in the cargo bay, it would take too long, so pack carefully.
Obviously (I'm sure your parents know this) FAA regulations regarding the handling of live cargo are completely different than those pertaining to luggage.
Not expecially. They just go in a pressurized, temperature controlled section of the plane. However, we chose delta airlines because they (MOSTLY) treat any type of luggage with respect.
Delta damaged one of my guitars once (back before I knew about flight cases) and yes, I am sure, the FAA and the ASPCA have regulated the handling of live cargo very differently than luggage, be serious.
Just because that's how they do it now doesn't mean that's the best practice. They broke his stuff by hurling it around the tarmac, there's no excuse for force so excessive that the guitar breaks. If a passenger is crying "oh my god they're throwing guitars", something about that is not right.
The airlines (in every airport in the WORLD) have determined that it is the cost effective way of doing things probably because it's less time consuming to toss something to another person than to walk over and hand it to them. It's not my decision, it's just the way it is. Use a rugged flight case or ship your fragile items, problem solved.
I am only addressing this guy's original United incident. As far as being complacent, if you're flying (any airline) you have no choice, they all handle luggage the same, it's not just United. So, use a flight case (that the airlines approve of) and then they are responsible for your damages, or ship your gear separately.
If everyone wants to band together and get some laws passed through the federal govt pertaining to luggage handling, go for it. Complaining by singling out United will do absolutely nothing to change things though.
Actually I work for Jet Blue and we are trained and retrained in the handling of Luggage, cargo, HR, Etc. We respect others property and act accordingly. I am not one of those, "hey I am going to say good things cuz I work there", kind of people. If there were issues I would be the first to state them but please be aware that NOT all airline employees "handle luggage the same." That is a sort of generic remark that some folks have. I am NOT attacking you so PLEASE do not reply with venom.
I don't feel attacked at all, there was no name calling in your post, it's very civilized. If you read my posts, I try to debate reasonably and not use venom. I'm sure there are some good eggs who work as baggage handlers and I can appreciate them. My experience, worldwide, has been mixed. My main point remains, use flight cases and plan for the worst. So many people on here are so emotional, unlike you LMSN.
it doesn't matter what kind of case it was in it should never have been throne around like that in the first place, as a bass player and having flown with my $3000 baby i would jump out an emergency exit and strangle the baggage handler if i saw my bass being thrown around
It DOES ABSOLUTELY MATTER what kind of case fragile items are shipped in. Would you put dinnerware in any old cardboard box and put it on a moving truck? No, you wouldn't. Also in a post September 11 world, good luck with jumping out of an emergency exit and strangling a baggage handler. Enjoy your Homeland Security anal probe.
I wonder what would happen if United broke some of Eminem's equipment what he would do? I'm guessing something that would involve him facing criminal charges.
It's been said lately that United Airlines could be on the verge of "going under". Wouldn't it be interesting if Dave Carroll's "United Breaks Guitars" is what ultimately leads to UAL's demise while at the same time making his career.

@MeWatchy
My experience with pro audio gear in flight cases was a real shock.
The airline baggage people took one look at my brand new flight case and FREAKED OUT.
"We are not responsible for any equipment in a flight case."
WTF?
It's called a flight case, I bought it to fly my equipment with, it was made for that, and they looked at it like it was radioactive or something.
It was a reel to reel multitrack tape machine, and it was damaged on the flight. Had it repaired before the gig.
