Yep, the so called "hole" is a hole in the earth's magnetic field due to solar storms entering the earth through the poles. It is a magnetic hole, not a physical hole.

I have never looked into this myself, but I think that what the pilot refers to as a hole is nothing, but an area in both poles where solar storms hit the earth. I did search top gear polar challenge and put in the same coordinates that showed on their gps , when they claimed they were at the pole, into google earth and they were not where you thought they would be. Check for yourself

their position was 78 35' 7" 104 11' 9"

the north pole as per google earth is located at 90 0' 0" 0 0' 0"

The two locations are 791 miles apart.

He's Right on. None of the airlines will fly directly over the north polar entrance any more than the Polar Satellites. The compasses and Navigation systems go haywire. This is due to the loss of the magnetically polarized iron laden mantle underneath (the hole), that leaves the compass needle with no point of reference. I'm sure this is the same reason for the Bermuda triangle phenomena, as their are inner/outer ocean baffles (more holes) to control sea levels/pressures.
