That's an in-ear monitor. Tons of singers/musicians use them, as a replacement for and they're better than clunky stage monitors. I'm guessing you're not a musician since you thought it was a hearing aid. When you're performing on stage and you have an a ton of very loud musical instruments surrounding you, it's pretty damn near impossible to hear yourself. If you can't hear yourself, it's very difficult to stay in sync with the rest of the band, hence the need for monitors.
