... it's like being at the helm of the Starship Enterprise and taking it out for a dog-fight with a Klingon! You grab handfuls of levers and twist them into making otherwordly sounds in an instant. You just cannot get the same interactive satisfaction with any other electronic instrument. Kudos for making a superb 'patch' on the DW8000 - but even the Arturia software doesn't come close, even if you do manage to control it with an individual after-touch keyboard. You need the REAL THING... ;c)
@noddyspuncture Amen to that. I have played a CS-80. It really is another world. It is my favorite out of all of them, with the Memorymoog coming in a close second. Then prophet 5, Xpander, OB-X(Not enough modulations!!) and coming in last, the Jupiter 8(NO GUTS)
I really need to fix my CS-70.
The Polymoog deserves its own classification. I love it to bits.
And Monosynths are my favorite. You can walk up to a Mini, set the dials to any position, and it sounds great every time.
The thing about the CS80 is much more than just it's sounds. Much, much MUCH more. It is it's whole playability and how it responds to hands-on 'tweaking'. I am not familiar with the DW8000, but you could recreate CS80(ish) patches on any run of the mill synth, and as soon as you start 'tweaking' then it's gone. he CS80 sounds like a CS80 all the time even throught the wildest tweaking sessions. If you have never owned or played one then you just won't understand... (continued)
I just love the old Korg DW8000. Too bad that many of the old synths have developed glitches and other problems. I used mine for many years until it finally gave up the ghost! I would buy another one in a flash if it was in perfect working order. I guess they were not built to last. Your DW sounds fantastic! I hope it continues to give you many years of enjoyment. Thanks for posting this video.
The DW rarely messes up. It is a very stout design. It suggested that the EPROM chip be copied and re-burned, as they begin to relax their code after 20 years or so. It wont do anything without it. Also, the power supply does go out, which has happened to mine. Other than that, they will pretty much last forever.
Thanks for sharing the patch setting. It was this very same video that I came across that I decided to get DW8k. Thanks man! Now if I can get that string setting from your Fade to Grey video ;) Thanks again for sharing!! I'm wondering about the mod too??
forgot to add, I love this arrangement (I love your version much more than the original). Was that a flubbed bass part at 1:18? If it was, you accidentally played one of the coolest chord progressions I've heard in a long time (1:13 - 1:21). I'm gonna steal it!
Also, what mods have you done to your 8000? I notice lots of buttons that aren't stock.
The Mod is just a potentiometer with a 1/4 inch jack. this goes into 8 diodes I harvested from an ancient hard drive, one for each filter. The wires just hook to the trimpots inside to control the filter, but its been disabled.
nice. vangelis would be proud. i just found one mint for 77 bucks and i couldnt be more thrilled. the guy didn't know what he had i suppose. such a nice thick sound its hard to imagine its actual sampled waveforms. must be the analog filter eh? :) one thing, does anyone know of a controller (as in the roland pg-800/1000 for the jx's) to work the filters and parameters real-time? would the behringer bcr-2000 b-control work in that capacity?
Yes. Any sysex controller can edit a DW in real time, however, the stepping would be obvious when adjusting these parameters. The DW is easy enough to fly through once one gets used to it, so I have never actually used sysex editors on any of my gear. As for the waveforms on the DW, they are not really sampled. Instead, it uses an additive engine similar to the synclavier.. Another thing is that the waveforms are free-running, sounding only with the VCA, just like a analog synth.
ahh the synclavier. sweet sounds coming from that one. that's a surprise about the dw. i am a noob but i could have sworn it was subractive. the digital delay and the arpeggiator is about the sweetest thing ive heard on it as well. thanks for the info gad. much appreciated
Not only does the BCR-2000 work great for the DW-8000, it's the only reason I bought it. So if you want the .syx file for the BCR that controls every parameter of the DW-8000, send me a message...
real simple.set osc 1 and 2 on saw, (same octave, though for the "authentic" Vangelis sound one needs to be an octave up) put the detune at about 2 and make sure the VCA's EG attack setting is set above 0 (about 3-5), and the VCF's EG matches the attack setting. set the filter cuttoff at almost max (around 53), and the res to about halfway, with the EG intesity to about half. from these basic params, just tweak the others till you get the right sound...
very nice! I get the listing of the parameters of DW.... thank U

Checked out your garageband site. GREAT stuff.
Cheers and happy new year...

excellent video. Would be VERY appreciative if you would post or send along the patch settings. I'd love this sound on my DW-8K
Great patch!

thanks to this video i might discover the plesaures of the after touch i say i might because my kawai k11 also has a hard to play aftertouch

very nice. unfortunately those 80s korg's had an awkward aftertouch. they needed a real push to get it going, as seen in your video :)

Yeah, I know. Fortunately, i am very unsubtle, so I can deal with it.

It has a few magic powers- fortunately they are extremely cheap. It's the only digital hybrid clunker i've ever seen get close to the Van sound.

I just bought one 2 weeks ago for 250 CAN. You can get some really great sounds out of it. It's my first synth and I must say not too shabby at all.
