The demons in Dwarf Fortress (and other ASCII games) look like ampersands (&) because '&' is known as the 'daemon symbol' on Unix computers. This is because '&' starts background-processes on Unix - which are called 'daemons'... because demons did boring repetitive tasks for ancient Greek Gods.

I'm currently playing 31.16 and every time I try to go into a town as adventure mode the town consists of a few stone buildings packed with villagers; no shops, no meeting hall, no nothing.

Have no idea why.

So my question is this, I have noticed rivers leading off map and I was wondering if I could route the excess water that makes it through the design I have to keep out the main body of water into a channel that leads to the edge of the map. If I can would it fill up after a certain amount of time? Or just automatically backfire and flood my fortress? My hope is that it will just disappear after it reaches the edge of the map.

@HellGateFanticLeader Water dissapears off the edge of a map, thankfully. There's prolly video evidence of it to in one of my earlier vids, when i started the moat system outside.

I would like to ask your opinion on this since I am relatively new to the legends of this game, you see, I am going to attempt to build an ocean fortress. Now the basic plan is to wait until winter after making a sizable amount of floodgates and masons then mining out the ice until I reach the bottom and digging underneath the ground to make my fort there.

For instance, do you have to have every piece for every dwarf made ahead of time, or will they equip them as you make them?

The "all armor is steel" bug was fixed very soon after .03. The current version (.12) is actually so stable, Toady has taken a break from pure bug fixing and been messing around with new river and town content. DF is pretty much the antithesis of a bug free app, but the current version is very stable.

Going to assume if one were to reclaim that embark, all those demons would be considered friendly eh.... To dream of war chickadees hehe.

I managed to kill off like... about 50 to 100 elves in Adventure mode once... most of them only took like one slice to kill... and about 90 of them were all peasant elves with no apparent skills or occupation... just sitting about in some old human ruins.
