actually the song is directed towards a guy that met up with collins at a friends cabin. there was bad weather yet this guy encouraged collin's friend to go out on the lake in a boat against phils advice. the friend drowned. collins first played this song when that guy was at a concert and focused a spot light on him. its very personal. look it up, it also explains the life preservers on the stage
